NER: What would you eat at a charity event

I am doing a charity event at the end of the month and we are trying to solidify the menu.  We get three salads to serve from the caterer. We are serving a cous cous as one and a watermelon basil as the second choice.  We are hemming and hawing over the third and ultimately have a split decision among the planning group.  So I am reaching out to my knotties for a fresh, unbiased opinion.

Which one out of the two below would you prefer?

1.  Marinated tomato and cucumber salad

2.  Chopped Tuscan Kale with White Wine Vinaigrette, Pecorino Romano

ROCK IS KING!!

Re: NER: What would you eat at a charity event

  • I am all about the tomato & cucumber one.
  • I would do the kale because I think any group of 3 salads should include a leafy green option.
  • 2, but neither are that appetizing to me.  Im picky, though.

  • I also vote to skip the watermelon, it seems out of season to me since I'm in the North East. I vote cous cous, tomato and kale. I think there needs to be something leafy.
  • I'd swap the watermelon for the tomato, have caprese salad and the kale.

    Ditto
  • I vote for the tomato cucumber!

    ^ ditto this
  • You need at least one "safe" choice for each course...  I would add a more traditional salad.

  • Just one girls vote but I would go tomato and cucumber. I've had the occasional good kale salad, but I've also had a lot of bad kale salads -- where the kale wasn't tenderized and was still very course and hard to chew. I echo the comments that it would be good/nice to have one more traditional salad option, although I would like all three of the watermelon, the cous cous and the tomato and cucumber.

  • I wouldn't eat any of them... so I'd probably ask them to substitute in a caesar salad.
  • If you're dead set on the watermelon one, I say the Kale, because all those salads and no actual leafy salad would be odd to me.

But I would swap the watermelon for the caprese one.

And then I would eat all three. Hells yeah.
  • martha1818 said: I would do number 2 so that there is a leafy option too. Maybe because I've never had It before, but watermelon and basil- is that a popular salad that people enjoy? Seems like a weird combo/something for summer instead. I agree with the poster above who said to swap it for the tomato/cucumber! I don't know that it's popular, per se, but it's a delicious combination. Basil is sweet and fresh in a floral/herbal way, and watermelon is sweet and refreshing in a light, fruity way. I don't know how much sense that makes to people who aren't "foodies" like I proclaim myself to be, but I've had the combo before and it's really good. It was a nice fall version of watermelon and mint. Also worth mentioning for anyone who wants to try it at home: buy fresh basil and chiffonade the leaves (roll them up nice and tight, and then slice down the rolls as you would an itty bitty jelly roll). The tiny little ribbons of basil add a nice bite to sweet watermelon. Goes great with a more tart dressing, like a simple balsamic vinaigrette.
  • Just wanted to add a different point of view. I have a few recovering alcoholics in my family, including my father. If he knew that alcohol purposely was not included in an event because of him, he would feel bad/embarrassed. He wouldn't see it as, "Oh, how nice, they took out the possibility of temptation for me." An alcoholic is going to be tempted every day in many situations. Even just walking into a restaurant and past a bar is temptation.

Forgive me @ClimbingBrideNY (I'm currently running a fever so I could just be missing something), but did this get posted in the wrong thread?  :)

  • I know I'm picky, but I wouldn't like any of those options. Can you have a more traditional green salad or even a more traditional fruit salad? I think if you're trying to please a large group of people, you might want a "safer" choice.
  • It sounds like this is more of a 'foodie' event, like for a super-upscale trendy crowd. If so I would definitely go kale.
The watermelon-basil sounds FANTASTIC. I am going to try that tomorrow. Those are two of my favourite things. I have forever loved watermelon/mint/feta salads, so the basil would DEFINITELY be a great choice.
I just really love basil. Once I had a basil cheesecake. SO GOOD.
  • I would LOVE the watermelon-basil salad. I despise couscous though, so I would go for the tomato salad second, and then a leafy green salad third.
