Going to work sick

Re: Going to work sick

  • I hate when people come to work sick. My job gives you 7 days paid of sick time and then you can always dip into your vacation time if you need it (which, after the first year of employment, is pretty generous). You're not productive when you're sick and all you do is prolong the time it takes you to get better and you risk getting others sick.

FI's job also has no written sick time policy, with the exception of needing a note if you're going to be out more than 3 days. Fully paid and he doesn't have to worry about running out of days. This will be awesome when we have kids because he can be the one to stay home with them when they're sick.

I never understood how sick time for an employee applies to their children's sicknesses. My job has unlimited sick time that's only tracked by supervisors if they choose to do so. People at my work constantly call out because their child is sick and it slides because no one bothers to go to HR about it. I feel like it's abuse of the system. Just my two cents.

Well, as a previous poster pointed out, taking sick kids to day care, pre school or elementary school isn't good for the kid and risks spreading whatever they have.

I'd be happy I had a job that values my health and the health of my family instead of complaining that other people have the audacity to parent.

Same. Our sick policy is for the employee - not their family. So if the EMPLOYEE is sick, they can take a sick day. But if they are caring for someone (anyone) else, it's classified as unscheduled PTO.

  • See I hate it wjen people come in sick. I have a decent immune system but V doesn't. He could be in the hosiptal if he gets the flue or something similar. So we have to make sure we aren't near the sick or it will make our lives really diffcult ha.

  • I don't mind co workers coming in sick (unless you got the plague) but I have a co worker who bring in HER SICK KID TO WORK!!! I am like knock that shit off! This is an office space, no place for children, especially not sick kids!
WHAT? Where do you work where that's even tolerated?
@southernbelle0915 we are in a very small office where is a "family" atmosphere and the person in question goes to church with her boss and ..yeah... I don't think its cool. It drives me nuts.

I was not arguing about sending kids to school sick or bringing them to work sick. I was stating that some places of employement only offer sick days for an employees health, not to cover if they are well and stay home if their kid is sick.

I value my job's generous sick time. But the fact is it covers MY health, not my children, my parents, siblings, etc. We are supposed to use a PTO, like @southernbelle0915‌ pointed out.
  • Apparently the company I work for is awesome about sick time, but I didn't know this, and came to work with a cold for about a week.  What I find ironic is that the people who complained about me being there sick because "I got them sick" are now working sick.... thus perpetuating the cycle.

Had I known my company was as incredible with sick time as they are, I would have taken more days off, and will in the future.

That said, a co-worker sent an email out on Tuesday saying she was sick and would be returning the following Monday.  I wish I was psychic and knew exactly how long a cold would last.
  • Y'all, I can't afford to take sick time. I work, I get paid - I don't work, I don't get paid. I've never had a job that offered sick time, or even PTO. Luckily I rarely get sick.

Funny story. One time, I was so sick. I couldn't swallow, it hurt my throat to breathe, and I was running a fever of about 102. I called in to my AM job at Office Depot and told the manager I was sick, and he said I can't get you covered this late, come on in. Throughout the shift, I begged to get cut early so I had time to go to the doctor between the AM job and my after-school PM job. I was working cashier - a job literally everyone in the store can do - and the manager refused to send me home because I didn't "sound sick". I got off from the AM job, called my PM boss and told her I was going to the doctor and I'd update when I knew what was up. I had strep and wound up not working either job for two days with a doctor's note.

Then, about a week later, I developed bronchitis (not uncommon; I get that pretty often, and it's never contagious) and got sent home. The SAME manager told me "I can't have you working sick." Of course, that day I was working in our copy center, which only certain associates can actually handle. It's pretty involved work, and you have to actually know what you're doing for it to run effectively.

WTF I WAS RUNNING A FEVER LAST WEEK. I'm not even really SICK this time! So again I go to the doctor, get him to give me a note that says I'm not contagious, and take it right back and get cleared to work.

I'm pretty sure that manager hated me.
