Bathroom upgrades- talk to me about paper towels

The bathroom is a shortcoming of my wedding venue. While clean, it's a bit sad looking. 3 stalls, pink walls, etc.

I pulled together stuff for bathroom baskets (I spent less than $10, mostly pulling from couponing stock) and have some fancy pump soap to put by each sink as an alternative to their nasty hot pink stuff. I'll also have extra centerpieces so, if there's room, they have been directed to add a bouquet to each bathroom. The counters aren't huge.

Now I'm puzzling over towels. The bathrooms have industrial paper-towel holders (the kind that can hold the trifold towels) but they seem to be kept empty. There are a few of the old, weak-ish blowdryers.

Should I buy paper towels for the bathrooms? If so, can I just buy them to fill their holders or should I buy the fancy kind? (Kleenex makes them in boxes, I wouldn't bother with patterns or colors). And, if I buy them, how many do I need? We'll have 150 people for 6 hours (ceremony through reception).

I'm just shy of 3 weeks out so I'm clearly fixating on all the wrong things!

  • Honestly I don't think it's something you need to worry about. The venue has blow dryers, and they always suck but at least they have them! If you want to spruce it up more put some of your flowers in each bathroom!

  • I always appreciate decent paper towels in a bathroom.  Those blowers dry out my hands.

The Kleenex ones should be fine.  But I have no idea how many of them you should buy.  I guess assume each person will use the bathroom on average 2 or 3 times.  So call it 450 bathroom uses to be safe.  Each person uses two paper towels.  So buy enough that you have 900 sheets?  That seems like a lot.  But I'd always rather have extra.

Also, this formula assumes everyone will wash their hands.  :-/

  • I generally don't think bathroom upgrades are necessary, but if the venue doesn't stock paper towels (could you ask your contact at the venue about this?) then I think it's a very nice thing to provide. I HATE walking out with wet hands. But I don't think it matters whether they're fancy.

  • I would buy the Kleenex ones. I hate when bathrooms have weak ass dryers and shitty or no paper towels. Sure, you don't HAVE to do it. But it's something I would do for my guests too. It's a nice touch.

You should not have to buy paper towels for the bathrooms.  You are paying your venue to provide an adequate and stocked space and that should include paper towels in their paper towel holders.

The day of your wedding have someone check the bathrooms.  If there are no paper towels then you need to speak with a venue staff member and have them stock the bathrooms.
It's not that they run out, they discontinued the use of them altogether. I asked about it when I was there Friday.

Um. Yeah, if they're not going to provide towels, I'd provide them.

Also: WHAT. They don't provide towels. What. Hot air dryers? Do those ever work properly for ANYONE? Ever?! Do they expect your fancified guests (AND YOU IN YOUR DRESS?!?!) to wipe their hands on their fancy-ass clothes?! I'd be so annoyed. Nope, Venue. If I'm having my wedding at my place, I'll provide the paper towels. If I'm having it at your place, YOU PROVIDE THE FRICKING TOWELS ZOMG.

    So stupid to me.

They work great for me! Then again, all I usually do is aim them down my shirt for a nice warm breeze, so my expectations may not be in line with yours.

I'm with you. When we booked, my mom and I noticed that the holders were empty. I didn't think much of it but remembered. When we went back again, same thing. When I was there Friday, I asked and she mentioned that they got rid of them.

She was a bit vague but she made a comment about it being a government building and cost reduction. I'm not sure.

So using JCBride's math, it sounds like 900 towels is the right number. I checked out Amazon and it looks like I can grossly overbuy (18 cartons of 70) for $45. Easy and done!

  • If they are going to discontinue the use of paper towels then they should get rid of the damn holders. Nothing irks me more then keeping the holders up but not filling them.

  • I hate those hand dryers. I'd go with the Kleenex ones. You can use the leftovers at home.

    Agreed. It looks terrible.

I agree with you both. It annoys me. I'm not sure that it would have been a deal-breaker on the venue but it's definitely something I disagree with. Although I do understand why they haven't removed them yet - they're built into the wall and would take considerable effort to remove.

    Fortunately, this is easily addressed!

  • Don't laugh at me, but I always run up to party city and buy disposable paper guest towels before a party. Because not everyone likes drying their hands on the same guest towels. I sure don't.
    These:

because it matches my bathroom, but there are loads of them. I hate air dryers. If that's what the venue comes with, I'd bring my own.

Those are so pretty! A little pricey for the quantity I need but I should grab some for parties at our house. I've always envied my parent's system which doesn't work in our house-- They have 2 cute baskets: 1 filled with pretty rolled hand towels and 1 next to it with one discarded towel left. You can grab a new one if you like or toss one in when it gets too wet.

I'll order the paper ones from Amazon shortly. I have Prime but no place to store them so I'm going to wait a bit!

I love the rolled hand towels thing. It always makes me feel as if I'm someplace really elegant. The Plaza, or someplace like that. I love it when people do things like this. Unnecessary luxuries, but they make me feel as if they really made an effort for me, as a guest.
  • Hmmm.. I want to do hand rolled towels in my guest bath in the home... But I don't have a countertop its just a pedestal sink.

They do it in their powder room. They just have a pedestal too- they just use smaller baskets and have one under the light switch, one closer to the toilet. They use plain white hand towels so they can bleach the heck out of them regularly too.
