Would you find this a little odd?

The situation: A male sales associate asked the person serving you if they could switch so that he could serve you instead. Without any context, does that seem a bit weird?

Re: Would you find this a little odd?

  • Maybe it's my sinus infection, but I don't understand this scenario....
  • Not weird at all. I can think of tons of legit reasons why this would happen. I would need context for it to seem weird. But almost all of my friends, and I, have worked various retail positions where we have had to do that in the course of work.
  • I think its odd.. but I want to know more? .. did this person specifically want to serve you... or not serve the person they were serving?

I mean, I guess they might want to switch because "Joe", the person presently serving me, knows more about X (X being some subject that the other customer is inquiring about) than "John", the person wanting to switch.  But, just from reading the OP, it might be that John thinks I'm hot stuff just wants to try to pick me up.

He works at the pharmacy, and has served me almost every time I`m there. He was finishing up with somebody else just as the other cashier was free. As my cashier was going to get my meds, he intercepted the cashier and asked if he could get them for me instead. The cashier said "OKAY, [other cashier's name]" in an exaggerated voice.

The context is that I've been getting vibes from this guy for well over a year now. It always seems like he's going out of his way to make sure he's the one serving me, but today was the most blatant example. I've never seen him act this way with other customers.

ETA: It's not like we're super friendly. There's no chit chat or anything. If there was, I could see him wanting to serve me because know each other and like to chat.

  • That would get a slight eyebrow raise from me, but nothing else.
  • My first thought was that it is easier for him to do it because he knows how to serve you. If it really seems like he is trying to get your attention or something, be flattered and enjoy it.

I'm not bothered by it - like, I'm not going to try to avoid this guy or anything. It just seemed like a bit of a weird thing to do, especially since I've been getting that vibe for a while now.

  • Yeah, it sounds like he has the hots for you.

  • Always trust your gut/weird vibes about a guy.  Have you seen One Hour Photo?  Yeah, I'd be avoiding this guy.

Ha, that same thought popped in my head too!
  • Uh... I would. BUT I'd be annoyed to have an associate helping me and then all of a sudden be swapped up with a whole 'nother person. Having worked retail, I find it incredibly rude for an associate to swoop in and take a customer from another associate without being asked.

This is a pharmacy, so they're not working commission. He always seems to manoeuvre himself so that he'll be the one serving me. By this, I mean if he's in the back doing something else and sees me (even if I'm not in line) he'll make a point of opening another till and call me over by name. Sure, he could just be being friendly, but he's not like that with any other customer that I've seen.

When I went to the other cashier this time, I kind of thought to myself, "Aw, better luck next month, dude." And then when the person serving me went to get my meds, he asked the person if he could get them instead. The person serving me seemed to tease him a bit and acted like he was doing him a favour.

    He seems harmless, though.
