Wedding Woes

Gotham

Anyone else watch?

Re: Gotham

  • I wasn't crazy about it. It was very "introduce all the characters in the first episode!" and the dialogue was a little lame.

    Jim Gordon is a doofus.
  • I feel like it had potential.  There were definitely some things I thought were stereotypical and overwrought, like every time Jada Smith was on screen and the cop partnership.  I'm hoping she settles that down some.  I like the intro of the relationship between Gordon and Wayne, and the Falcone setups.

I could've done w/out the introduce all the baby villains, b/c it ended up feeling very forced.  I think they would've disappointed fanboys/girls though, so I kinda get why they did it.  I am now very  curious about Barbara Gordon's backstory though.  I'm refusing to start googling it, b/c I want to have a little surprise, even if it's out there.
  • I don't like this Alfred.
  • I will watch it again.  Is Catwoman supposed to be that much older than Bruce Wayne?  I thought Barbara was Jim's daughter (Batgirl)?  Was his wife and daughter both named Barbara?  I wonder what will happen with that.

I didn't mind it and will watch it again to see how a few more things go down.

  • Oh, I forgot to say that I really enjoy the kind of timelessness of Gotham in the actual city.  I mean, it comes across still as this dark noire piece, with a sort of 50s sensibility, but they're all using computers and cell phones.  I mean, they're at the movies and dressed up?  I like that it's taken out of the "real" timeline of the world.

I don't think I saw enough of this Alfred to really decide if I liked or disliked him.  I did laugh at him yelling at Bruce to get down off the roof.  We've never really seen Alfred parent Bruce in anything else and I'm looking forward to that.

To the bolded: That kind of bothered me.  I'm used to Batman: The Animated Series which was set in the 20's or 30's.  The cell phones threw me off a bit.

  • We were a bit shocked by it (wait, is he using a cellphone!?), but I ended up liking it.  It allowed Gotham to have it's lights, buildings, but also the bright ads (there was a really cool Wayne Industries ad in the very first frame that was an LED screen one) and really created a unique city for a fairly unique premise in this particular story.

I don't know how close this is running to the Gotham Central comic, which is the only comic that dealt with the GCPD and is supposed to be the inspiration.  And I don't really get too hung up in canon, b/c comic books rewrite their own history all the time (hello X-men).  Though I do hate what they've done to Harley Quinn, who was written in the Batman Animated Series you're talking about.  They really changed her in the comics.
  • I enjoyed it! But I will put the disclaimer out there that I've seen the newer Batman movies and never really was that into the comics.

  • I enjoyed it! My husband didn't like how fast they introduced everyone, but I pointed out that in this universe, everyone is so tied to each other in terms of creation that it didn't bother me.

I will watch again, I hope they don't an Agents of Shield and be boring, so I stop watching, then apparently find their groove and get really good.
