For some reason, I seriously love rain/winter boots! I never bothered buying nice ones but I've realized they're worth the investment. Another item added to my long shopping list.
@alucky23 you have quite a collection! I love those LL Bean boots.
I love living in the South where I don't need this stuff.
it rains in the South. True story. It rained everyday I was in NOLA last week. I wish I had remembered my boots. Instead all I had was sandals. Sandals and week streets were a bad mix.

I have tall Uggs that I bought in 2006 that are still going strong for winter. They need to be retreated for moisture but they're comfy and my feet stayed warm and dry after a long day in sleety NYC.
I had a pair of Uggs that I loved and used for a few years but I had no idea I could pretreat them and use them in the rain and snow. I used them on cold days and in light rain/snow.

Gahhhh, for real! I did volunteer work in NOLA & MS after Katrina, and I was shocked at how much rain they actually get down there!
...and here I am occasionally getting away with these in January:
I have big calves and can't wear boots at all unless they're low. I had a pair of rain boots but I only wore them a few times and they started leaking in the sides and the whole point of rain boots is puddle jumping so I quit wearing them. I miss the puddle jumping.
I'm loving this thread because I've been debating on getting a pair of Hunter boots. Part of me wants pink ones. Although that's not really practical. For those of you with the black ones. Should I go glossy or original??

I wanted glossy so bad. Until I tried them on. I really didn't like the glossy on me, but loved the original. My feet seemed too shiny or something with the glossy ones.

The first pair of rain boots I ever bought were pink, and I was in love with them for, oh, about a week, until I realized that they looked terrible with 90% of my closet.

They're not great as rain boots but they were better than my hubby''s regular leather shoes. They're fabulous in snow.

So true. I won't get much use out of them.
@JCBride2015 Thanks for the advice! One more question I normally wear a 7 1/2. My feet are always freezing so I was thinking about getting the inserts. Do they take up a lot of space? Should I order an 8 instead???

I'm the same size as you and I have an 8. The inserts are like a thick pair of socks. For me, the 8s don't feel too big when I'm wearing normal socks and don't feel too small with the inserts.
Although I hear the glossy ones are a little wider in the calf. Not an issue for me, but might be for some.

Mine are matte and they get a sort of chalky substance on them- what is that?!
Mine do too. I thought it was maybe minerals/gunk in the water?
Mine use to have that. I use to think it was from all the salt and stuff on the streets (I got mine in late fall). I have not noticed it now that its summer.

Mine also got that chalky substance at first but I noticed it's gone away over time.
@FutureMrsN3312 I've never used the wellie socks with my boots (although maybe I should try it!) but sometimes in the winter I put a pair of UGG furry insoles in there. Those definitely take up about half a size of space. Go try them on before you buy them, and make sure you have room to wiggle your toes if you want to use an insole. I am on the small side of a size 6, and the 6 works for me with thick socks or insoles.

That's true. But I usually wear leather boots with my dresses in the winter, so a little bit of rain doesn't hurt them.
You people are terrible influences as I now really want a pair of Hunters! My last rain boots were cheapos from Payless and pulled apart at the heel. So that's a good reason to buy Hunters, right?
Anyone have suggestions for dressy, almost flat (like 1-1.5" heel) boots for cold weather campus interviews? I live in CA so I don't have snow boots, and since it's interview wear they have to look fairly dressy. Ankle length, not knee-high as I have large calves and can't wear even wide knee-high boots.

Funny, I was just searching wide calf boots on Zappos! They are out there!

I know they're out there (in fact, I have two pairs), but they don't fit me. I have mad calf muscles. I'm also so used to wearing sandals year-round from living in CA that I get overheated in close-toed shoes and would probably melt in knee-high boots.
The Professor is In recommends La Canadienne, but I can't afford $300-350. $200 is about my limit for good quality work shoes. Someone else recommended Ecco as a slightly cheaper alternative. I was looking at these on Zappos: This La Canadienne is similar but almost double the price: But they are suede, while the others are "waterproof leather and textile upper". I might order both and see if the LC one is really that much better.
I like the look of these, but I have a not too dissimilar pair already, and sometimes when I travel my feet swell up and I can't comfortably wear them, which is why I'm leaning towards the pull on, stretchier ones. And these are a slightly higher heel. I have nerve damage in my big toes so I can't wear heels for very long or it's extremely painful.
I like this one too. My other dilemma is whether to get brown or black...
For the record, these would all be worn with trousers (I don't do skirts with ankle boots, and I don't do skirts in interviews either), and also jeans when not in an interview or conference setting. Thoughts?

For now though, I have these ones:
