Invitation Wording Check

Would you lovely ladies mind giving me some feedback on my invitation wording? FI and I, plus my parents and the mother of the groom are hosting.

Together with their parents

Mr. & Mrs. Bride's Parents

and Mrs. Groom's mom

Bride

&

Groom

request the pleasure of your company at their wedding

Church

Address

Reception to follow

Couple of questions - Is it okay to say "reception to follow" if the reception is at a different location and starts later? I am including a reception card.

Also, do I need a comma after "together with their parents" and the Grooms mom's name?

Finally, the groom's parents are separated but not divorced. Groom's dad is not hosting or contributing financially. Is it weird to leave him off?

Many thanks!

Couple of questions - Is it okay to say "reception to follow" if the reception is at a different location and starts later? I am including a reception card. A reception card is a good idea if it's not in the same place.

Also, do I need a comma after "together with their parents" and the Grooms mom's name? No. And If you say "Together with their parents..." including names is redundant. You may as well just say "Mr. and Mrs. Bride's Parents and Mrs. Groom's Mom invite you....."

Finally, the groom's parents are separated but not divorced. Groom's dad is not hosting or contributing financially. Is it weird to leave him off? If he's not hosting, no it isn't weird. But contributing financially does not equal "hosting". Hosting means these 3 people will be welcoming people, tending to their needs, answering questions, etc.

    Many thanks!

ETA: Sometimes I think B&Gs use the invitation as a place to tip their hat to people who contributed financially. This is not the appropriate place to do that.

If you want to extend a special thanks, do it in your program where you can say "A special thanks to Bride's parents and Groom's mom for helping make this day possible".

When you could just be using "Together with their families", it's like you're leaving groom's dad off to call out that he didn't contribute financially. It's pretty glaring and some people may see it that way.

The bride and groom never directly take credit for hosting their own wedding by themselves.  If your parents are hosting, then you list them as hosts.  If you are hosting, then the wording changes so that you are not directly taking credit for hosting.  Here are two traditional choices:

    Mr. and Mrs. Bride's Parents

    Mrs. Groom's mom

request the honour of your presence

    at the marriage of

    Bride's Full Name

    and

    Groom"s Full Name

    Saturday, the seventeenth of January

    two thousand fifteen

    at half after one o'clock

    Church

    Address

    City, State

    or

The honour of your presence is requested

    at the marriage of

    Bride's Full Name

    and

    Groom's Full Name

    Saturday, (etc.)

Yes, you need a separate reception card.  When the ceremony is being held in a church, you must "request the honour (honor) of your presence".  This is the wording that is used for all weddings in a house of worship.  Never use the ampersand "&".  It is an abbreviation.  The only abbreviations used on a wedding invitation are Mr., Mrs. or Ms.  A non-traditional wording that is often used would be this:

    Together with their families (parents)

    Bride's Full Name

    and

    Groom's Full Name

request the honour of your presence

as they are united in marriage

    Saturday, (etc.)

I don't, personally, like this one, but it is often used these days.

Unfortunately TheKnot is not a good source of etiquette because it's sponsored by the wedding industry, which is a collection of for-profit businesses who are interested in getting people to spend money even when it's not necessary and to do things that may violate etiquette.  So we don't automatically endorse their suggestions and opinions.

There are books on etiquette, written by experts in the subject, who we reference when we discuss matters of etiquette.  Because they are correct even when TheKnot is not.

My sources are Emily Post, Miss Manners, Amy Vanderbilt, and Crane's Guide.  I'll put them up against The Knot advertisers any day!

Ditto PPs about TK's etiquette advice.

Oh and you're welcome by the way. Glad I took the time to respond...
