Craft beer

Re: Craft beer

  • I don't drink beer, but on Windows Weekly (by the people that do Twit; http://twit.tv/ww) they always try at least one beer and review it.

  • H'okay so.

FI's birthday is coming up. And I had a spiffy awesome present for him - he'd mentioned wanting a Spiderman sunshade for his car a while back, and I got it, and I was ALL EXCITED TO SURPRISE HIM and then a couple of nights ago, he asked me (completely out of the blue) if I'd gotten it. And I can't keep a fucking secret to save my blessed life. -.-

SO I need a new birthday present for him. One that he DOESN'T already know is coming. And I think a nice craft beer would be an excellent choice. Problem being I don't DRINK beer, so I have no idea what to get. I don't want to get him something gross. He's generally into dark beers; he drinks Yuengling when we go out and Budweiser when we're home.

I know this might be a regional thing, but any and all suggestions are more than welcome.

(KIDDING, KIDDING.  I have nothing relevant to add, PPs have already given every suggestion I would've thrown out.  Just had to throw some RuPaul in.)
Are you judging me for my lack of beerology? Or are you judging FI's beer taste? Just curious...
    Beer taste.

s'all good, our fridge is stocked with PBR because it's CHEAP and easy to pound when pre-gaming.

  • As much as I too love fancy beers, I am also a big PBR fan. . . . Judge away!!!
  • FI loves bud light.i judge him for that. Not sure if this is a craft beer, but Delirium Tremens? That's my favorite beer. Well one of my faves.

  • See, I'm learning shit! I thought Yuengling was fairly high end as far as nationwide beers go. It looks fancy anyway! :/

Okay, so do some preliminary research, then go to the beer shop and spew out the preliminary research plus his typical food likes and dislikes, and then they'll give me neat recommendations? Is this a good plan?

  • @pinkcow13 - Tremens is DELICIOUS.

    @CaitTDid23 - Yes, that's an awesome plan.
  • Perfect plan! I used to work in a beer shop and my absolutely favorite customers were the newbies who knew nothing about beer... because it would be so fun to help them find new stuff and figure out what they like. You shouldn't feel bad at all going in there with zero beer knowledge. Craft beer nerds are usually super nice and excited to share the gospel with potential converts!

I work for a beer and wine distributor and I don't drink often.  I take my newbie questions to our sales team ALL THE TIME - They are terrific and very well versed in their products!  Everyone I've spoken to is more than happy to try to help folks find something that is new and different!  Have fun!

  • Awesome! I'm glad to know that "Beer People" don't look down on the newbies like me. I'll be doing some research tonight.

I might drag him in the store and get him to do it one day before then. I'm sure I can get him in there without it looking weird, where asking random questions about beer would be really out of character for me. And he gets wise/"suspicious" any time I start asking random questions, and since he's already screwed up one birthday surprise....

  • I'm not a beer drinker - more like champagne, but I love Shiner Boch.  FH loves Shiner and Yuengling.  I also like Allagash White.  I've had some pretty awful stuff from major breweries.  Fat Tire is okay to me.  I call it Flat Tire.

  • If you're in Oxford, you can easily come down to DE and get Dogfish Head beer!

@hellokellybean - DE=Delaware? I'm in AL. :( I think I've seen Dogfish Head mentioned though a few times on here maybe? If I'm ever in the area I'll have to look it up.

@Ndelible I've heard him mention Shiner Bock a couple of times so maybe I'll try and find that.

@pinkrevenge he doesn't really drink LIGHT beer - I mean, he drinks Bud Heavy... but I mean apparently that and Yuengling are lighter than I thought haha. I seriously don't know ANYTHING about beer. I dunno, I'm gonna take him in my local specialty beer store and hopefully he'll give me some ideas... ETA to finish because I'm a scatterbrained creature - I'm actually curious about that cinder bock. It sounds like I might like that one if it's not a super strong beer taste.

  • Think of beer like wine. You know how some of them taste better when paired with the right food? Beer can be the same way.

If you go on the Sam Adams website, they offer food pairings and flavor profiles for each beer.
Ooooooh I like that. I know food and beer have the same sort of relationship as food and wine, but I haven't ever really looked into it so much. I probably should start, I guess.

    Haha, bless your heart ;)

Light beer means it's light in calories.

If he's drinking bud and yuengleng, then it's safe to say he likes lagers.  I'm sure he'd also like pilsners.

    WTF FLIPPING BOXES.

Oh. So wait. A dark beer is a beer that's dark in color, but a light beer isn't a beer that's light.... Right? Like, a "light" beer could be really dark in color still?

Okay so lagers and pilsners, and pale ales? Someone said that one earlier.

I think I might just get him a thing of Jack and some whiskey stones. That's so much easier, haha.

ETA WTFFFFFFFFF BOXES YOU ARE HERE IN MY EDITOR I HATE YOU BOXES.

  • I'd be more iffy on the pale ales. Have you ever seen him drink Sweetwater 420 or Sierra Nevada?

...I've heard him BITCH about Sweetwater 420....? So I guess the best answer to that is no, haha.

Probably not a pale ale fan then!  Or he likes them and is very particular about which ones he likes, in which case shopping blindly could go wrong.

I *think* he just hates Sweetwater. But I could be wrong. I dunno. I really thought this would be a much simpler discussion than it has become, haha...

I used to work in a bar that sold tons of beers, and it was kind of a point of pride for me to recommend beers to people.  If we were having this conversation in 2005, I would be MUCH more helpful!! :)

I imagine I'd still have to have a better idea than I do, haha.

I dunno. I am going to have to get a better idea of what he likes outside of the stuff he drinks regularly. I think we'll go in the store this weekend.

  • I recommend Shiner because I'm not a beer person and I love it. Not too hoppy and a smooth flavor. There are so many whiskey, bourbons and scotches that you have a lot of choices. There are also samplers that you can get so he might find some thing new he likes.

LUCKILY I know exactly what whiskey he likes!!!! (I'm really excited about that. I was beginning to worry y'all were gonna think I didn't actually KNOW anything about FI, haha....)

I might actually see if I can get "Duff" beer. He really enjoyed that when we were in Universal. I dunno if it tasted good, but he thought it was cool as shit to be drinking beer from a cartoon he loves. Because he's a nerd like that.

Spirits are my go to gift to give and receive. My family thinks FH and I are alkies. I think maybe we are. We always have some kind of spirit to serve guests and ourselves.

Nope, not me! I think I've been to PA once? Maybe twice. Just driving through on the way to NYC. I dunno, I slept through those drives.
