I want cake!!

I've been checking out bakeries since getting engaged (that's the first step, right?) and some of the flavors sound DELICIOUS! I cannot wait to do cake tastings, like a lot of them. Napoleon, Nutella, apple pie, chocolate with a million fruit fillings, omg. This is going to be so much fun! What adventurous flavors did you try, what did you end up ordering? Tell me anything about cake :)

Re: I want cake!!

  • We didn't try any adventurous flavors... Not really our thing. We went with white chocolate cake with chocolate ganache filling and white chocolate cake with lemon curd filling for our cake, and then chocolate chocolate chip cake with peanut butter filling for the groom's cake. The white with lemon curd was amazing and the definite favorite. We have two 6" top layers in our freezer right now... Mmm, cake!
  • We did cupcakes. We had strawberry with strawberry cream frosting. Chocolate with chocolate. Italian cream cake. Vanilla with French vanilla. And then vanilla with pistachio frosting. We both loved the pistachio. It was very green, but amazing.

  • Those sound so good! We're definitely going to want something like the chocolate chip peanut butter one. The grooms cake is a great suggestion for it!

  • I'm old fashioned. Nothing beats vanilla cake with vanilla icing. For our wedding, we did cupcakes. Half were vanilla/vanilla and the other were chocolate/chocolate.

  • I love cake but don't want to be too adventurous.  However, I will die on the ice cream with cake hill.  I have never understood why wedding cake is served without ice cream.  So, I'm having it!

We are doing marble with Bavarian cream, white with lemon and chocolate with chocolate.  And buttercream.  Oh sweet buttercream!

  • We knew what bakery we wanted (and what flavors), so we didn't try too much. We are doing a small cake for us- pink champagne with a vanilla custard and buttercream frosting. Then chocolate, vanilla, red velvet, and pink champagne cupcakes for everyone else.
  • We tried a million combos of white cake, yellow cake, and chocolate cake with like 15 creams and 3 frostings. Went with the following:

White cake with mandarin orange cream and cream cheese frosting
Chocolate cake with chocolate cream and raspberry puree, cream cheese frosting
White cake with lemon cream and cream cheese frosting.

FI has celiacs so we are getting a little GF cake which will probably taste awful and cost 1 million dollars. I'm trying to decide between sheet cake for everyone else or a few different flavors of cupcakes. It's the trend in my area to do like 3 flavors of cupcakes and people can choose, and I love that.

One wedding had like chocolate injected with bailey's, strawberry and earl grey and a carrot cake with a cream cheese frosting.

  • We kept it simple. Needed to be nut free for several family members with very severe allergies, and alcohol free for quite a few recovering alcoholics. (Not even fake rum flavoring or the like.) We only wanted one flavor because we couldn't afford to have enough for people to have multiple servings, and when there are multiple flavors I always want both. Something light since our apps and dinner were really filling. SO that left us with a light lemon cake with fresh strawberries and cream cheese buttercream. It was perfection.

  • We didn't do anything too crazy to be honest.

One layer is coconut with chocolate.
One layer is chocolate with vanilla.
One layer is vanilla with strawberry.

Then our grooms cake is red velvet with cream cheese.

  • All those really sound great, especially the cupcake flavors! I really want one of those chocolate with earl grey. That's a bit adventurous. Did you guys have dessert other than cake, like with the meal? What was a hit, what didn't work? We're hoping to have a Viennese table with little creme brûlée and cheesecake and the like. I'm huge on dessert. There will also be a candy bar!

  • I have no idea yet what we're going to do for cake especially since FI just changed our plan from Cupcakes to cake.

All of these cake flavors sound awesome!!!!

  • I'm sticking with wedding cake flavour for our cake but we're having chocolate/red velvet/almond cupcakes and cake pops on the side. Now I want cake!!!

  • I have always known I was probably a half bubble off plumb but maybe I am leaning towards really, really wierd.  I do not have any use for red velvet cake, nutella anything, or peanut butter frosting/filling/pie.

I am a cake freak ( I really think I could overtake our Addie on this) and love good cake.  Heck, I really love peanut butter, just not in stuff for some reason.  I do not see purpose in either Nutella or red velvet cake.

Our wedding cake was 4 layers - white with lemon filling, white with strawberry filling, and 2 layers of chocolate caramel turtle.  Oh jeez that last one was freaking awesome in every way.  It was covered in Italian Buttercream.
  • Omg kmmssg chocolate caramel turtle! That sounds so delicious! I hope we can try that

A friend of mine insists red velvet cake is the biggest scam unleashed upon the American public, being that it's chocolate cake with food coloring. I'm inclined to agree.
  • We had 3 cakes: a carrot cake with orange cream cheese frosting, a vanilla cake filled with fresh raspberries, lemon curd, and a raspberry compote, covered with a lemon cream cheese frosting, and sacripantina--a white/vanilla cake, soaked in a little coffee, cocoa, and marsala, covered in a whipped cream frosting with marsala and candied hazelnuts.  The sacripantina won hands down, but the others were delicious too!

    SITB

I agree and it only has a tint bit of cocoa in it! What is that about?

There is a difference If you've ever tried blue or green velvet cake. My friends hates chocolate but loves red velvet cake. I've pointed out to her that's it's just colored chocolate but she swears it tastes different. I sometimes make chocolate cake with cream cheese frosting. It's good. Not as good as red velvet though. I don't know why.

Because true red velvet cake is made with a dutch cocoa that turns the cake red. It is NOT made with any food coloring whatsoever.

    I never knew that!
  • We had a classic white cake with vanilla buttercream. But instead of a grooms cake, we had chocolate fondue. Yep. Chocolate. Friggin. Fondue.

    Favors were marble cupcakes :-D

Side note: yankee candle has just released a candle that smells exactly like a delicious chocolate 4 layer cake. I swear I gained 3 lbs sniffing it. Those guys are mean, but evil chipmunk wants to get the room spray version and spray it all over the office before sitting back and watching everyone freak out trying to find the cake.
  • A co-worker's mom makes the most amazing cupcakes!

They are vanilla, fluffy as hell, like biting into a soft cloud fluffy, with an almond flavored white frosting.

She refuses to tell us her secret. I'd quit my job and make these cupcakes full time if I knew what was in them.

  • We had Red Velvet, Pink Champagne and Italian Cassata. They were all delicious! Unfortunately, all the cake we had in the freezer basically got ruined because we had a big storm last week, lost power for four days and had to throw EVERYTHING in our fridge/freezer out. DH was so heartbroken.
  • @kasmith1‌ pink champagne is so delicious! I can never make it the right way, always turns out a bit off. Does your bakery offer a small cake for your one year anniversary? Some of them out here do that, maybe you could still get some cake back. Sorry about the storm :(

Our bakery does actually offer the complimentary anniversary cake, and their cupcakes are reasonably priced, so I might just have to order some soon! Because that pink champange is amazing!
