Re: Another Mass Exodus

  • That thread was what kept me sane at work today. Though it does have me scared for what life after children is going to be like. I do not necessarily look forward to parent to parent interactions. I haven't actually looked at the bump site itself though. Does it have decent information? H and I are thinking of trying for kids pretty soon, and I want to have an idea at least of what I'm getting into.

Also. It's wine o'clock. Further posting may be incoherent.

I usually lurk the GBCN proboard.  There are multiple baby related boards with knowledgeable ladies.  I lurk TB once in a while, but I like the ladies on GBCN better.
  • Fun story: I grabbed some welch's fruit snacks to put in my lunchbox the other day. Around midday, I get ready to eat my lunch and grab the pouch. Ripped it open in anticipation and fruity chewy goodness.

What I found instead was fruit snacks too hard to chew, with absolutely no flavor. Totally ruined my entire day.

That sucks! I put a pack of Welch's fruit snacks into my and DH's lunches every day, and we've never had any issues. We even put some into our hotel welcome bags since they are gluten-free and packaged in our state (we tried to make our welcome bags NJ-themed). Some days, I am so starving by 3 pm that I'd start chewing my arm if I didn't have those fruit snacks!

I should probably mention that these fruit snacks were the ones leftover from "crunch month" to study for step 1 of boards.....

Haha  D'oh! Yea, that would lead to stale, hard fruit snacks!

I was very sad. I hadn't realized that they were the old ones when I grabbed them. Now I'm out of fruit snacks.

I forsee a trip to Costco in my near future. Friday is payday!

  • Confession: I love stale twizzlers.  My mother and I used to buy them, cut open the bag, and wait for them to dry out.  It's candy-jerky!

I'll just show myself out now.

But..... but..... how did you chew them? Man, that hurts my teeth just thinking about it.

Very carefully, and they had to get to a certain level of staleness, not rock-solid.  I wouldn't dare try it now.  Dentistry is expensive.  I will admit that it wasn't my finest hour.

  • As a parent I "understand" some of the madness, but man some of those ladies are coo-coo for crazy puffs.

I do get at times explaining no to the kids so they understand why, but you don't need to explain every single time! And I'm sorry, "Because I said so" is a valid reason for a parent to use when a child won't stop asking the same question over and over again, even after you've explained.

You're in luck. Costco seems to be a mecca for fruit snacks. Organic, nonorganic, different shapes. I'm not a fruit snack girl so I didn't realize this until today when I read the TB thread.

  • Costco has dried cherries! I can eat them and they don't make me itchy. SO GOOD! I love snacking on all the shit there.

  • I just got back from Costco and saw those. And the chocolate covered pomegranates. I've been having to hold myself back from all the amazing snacks and foods I got. I'm more of a salty snack girl so I've been trying to stop myself from eating all the hummus and veggie chips!.

But growing up with no discipline isn't the answer either. We would (on VERY RARE occasions) have that kind of stuff in my house- it was a treat. We didn't have it because my parents didn't want us to, it was that simple. I was taught to respect their decisions on stuff like this, so I did.

Fruit snacks were a rare treat for us too.  My Mom kept them "hidden" high up in the liquor cabinet, with all of the vodka.

  • Just finished that thread. Evil Chipmunk wants to get on the bump and do some gratuitous pot stirring. She's currently being plied with tequila and chocolate cheesecake.

Sadly, I know where this will lead. See, my nieces are never told no by their parents, its always a negotiation. Older niece is a rule follower too. On a massive level. Younger niece has told older niece on occasion that the rules don't need to be followed all the time (complete with hair toss and eye roll, love that little minion). Older niece doesnt listen. Sister and husband undulge this, "oh it doesnt bother anyone, she's super well behaved since she's big on rules...la dee da look at pretty flowers..."

That came crashing down this past June. Last few weeks of school, kids are of course not supremely interested in learning. Older niece tells two nine year old boys in her class that they aren't following rules and doing what teacher said. Two boys tell her to go fuck herself. Cue my sister and her husband watching in horror as this perfectly fake cobstructed world of theirs where everyone is always nice to each other crumbles because of the response to older niece's admonishments to follow the rules.

It is a scary thought and I read an article the other that was saying that after birds have flown away, parents are more prone to divorce. Heck I've seen it with my own parents after my little brother left the house. But I suppose you can always work at your relationship afterwards and enjoy the companionship? FI and I won't be having any children, so God knows what will be in store for us.
