Re: Car Shopping - Recommendations Please!

  • Toyota Camry owner here! I LOVE my car. Love love love. I have a 45 minute commute each way to work and it's awesome. I bought it used (it's a 2009) and the previous owner did all the recommended maintenance on it and never needed to do anything else (he kept meticulous records). It's good on gas mileage, and drives wonderfully. It's good in WNY winters. I most likely won't drive anything else but Toyotas in the future.

  • 2013 Subaru Impreza sedan owner here. I love it (although I live in SoCal, so we don't get snow). It does handle really well in the rain though, which is actually very similar to driving in icy conditions if it hasn't rained in a while because of the dried oil on the roads.

I'm from Upstate NY originally, so I do know how bad snowstorms can be, and I have a lot of friends back there who have Subarus and love them in the winter. I hope to try mine out in the snow at Big Bear or surrounding mountains during the winter sometime.

I get about 28 MPG City and about 32-34 MPG Highway. I also have the fully loaded model (heated seats, fog lights, moon roof, all weather floor mats, etc.), and it was about $26k brand new. You can get it cheaper if you don't want some of those options. But AWD is standard on all models.

  • I have 2012 Honda civic hybrid and I love it! It gets about 48mpg, 43 in the winter months with snow tires.

  • I personally love Mazda.  I currently drive a 2009 Mazda 6 and I have no complaints. It's very comfortable and has a lot of space, which would be good if/when you do have kids. I get about 28mpg, but they've improved that on new models. Plus, the Mazda 6 has a crazy large trunk, which is awesome.  And it totally has some zoom zoom in it. I'm thinking about buying a new car in the next couple years and am considering just upgrading to the newer Mazda 6, because I really do like my car a lot.  Plus they just redid the Mazda 6 to make it even more awesome.  My business partner thinks I need to upgrade to a "luxury status car", though (maybe Audi or Lexus). We'll see... I think the Mazda 6 is perfectly acceptable as a status car.

I have a 14 hyundai elantra gt. I love it. Gets about 25-30 miles to the gallon. It's the hatch back model, so I can haul small furniture.

I bought myself the 15 elantra limited. LOVE IT!

  • Brands FI/I/my family/my FILS CURRENTLY own:
    - Acura - RL - Too damn expensive.
    - Audi - TT - See Acura.
    - Buick - Century - GAS GUZZLER. I would trade it for just about any other car. I hate it.
    - Chevy - Camaro - No experience with it really, but ooooo pretty.
    - Ford - F150 - I FUCKING HATE DRIVING THIS THING. Decent vehicle, but it's the size of a New England State.
    - Honda - Civic - Love. A little tiny. His model's had a few recalls on it. But still. Honda.
    - Mazda - Miata - This is the smallest car I've ever ridden in. Iiiiiiiitty bitty.
    - Nissan - Sentra - Love. Zippy, tight steering. Too bad FI just got it a year ago and won't get a new one yet.
    - Toyota - FJ - Big. Not my cuppa.

Brands my family has previously owned (not already listed):
    - Hyundai - My sister flipped her Tiburon and walked away. Flips too easy, but super safe once they do.
    - Volkswagen - New Beetle, Passat, 64 Beetle, 65 Eurovan bus thing. Babies. Good cars, but such babies.
    - Geo - Metro Coupe hatchback. I BEGGED for this to be my car when I was 16. Loved it.
    - Lincoln - Towncar, Eh. Not my favorite.
    - Kia - our Rio was a piece of crap. It was also a rebuilt title, so there's that.
    - Datsun - Old truck we went to the lake in.

We have no loyalties. We are vehicular mercenaries.

I agree.  That's why I am still driving my Mazda.  His theory is that we need to present a certain level of class and luxury to our clients... his last 8 cars have been high end Mercedes.  I can kind of see his point, but I still won't buy a car that I don't like just to impress other people.  And I'd rather impress my clients with my professional ability, not my car, anyway.

  • I'm a VW kinda girl.  I had an 09 Jetta S and tonight I'm trading in my 2013 Jetta SE for the 2015 Tiguan SE.

I lease with them so I don't really worry about the cost of repairs.  I love my Jetta but I need 4wd.

Oh yay another VW fan! I'm still driving my 2000 Jetta. My DH has a 2007 Rabbit. We both love our cars. They both have about 150,000 miles.

OP, I would consider the Passat TDI if you're looking for a midsize vehicle with great gas mileage. The diesel engine gets you 44 mpg highway. The Passat TSI gets 35 mpg highway.

Just a note. My inlaws have had two Hyundais. Both have been disappointed after a few years of owning them. They lose value quickly for a reason.

  • We like Nissans as does DH's siblings.      My parents are Lexus and Highlander people.    My sister is a big Honda fan.   Both brothers are Honda people too.

Basically we are all over the place with Japanese cars.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

Before I bought my Honda Civic, I test drove a Hyundai. I all set to buy it but test driving it changed my mind. I didn't like the car at all.
