Re: Chicago Knotties - Lets Meet Up!!

  • Hi I am in Chicago also! Depending on the logisitics I could be in! I work in the Loop and live in the western suburbs.

  • So many Chicago-ites! All us SoCal girls are all spread out!
  • I have no idea what most people consider out of downtown, but for me, who's a newb to chicago and in no way an expert, I consider the loop and immediately surrounding area to be downtown.

I came from a town who's downtown consisted of about 6 streets so take my opinon with a grain of salt.

  • I live in the heart of Chicago, so I consider downtown to be the loop and it's very close surrounding area. I'd always like to stay actually inside the city of Chicago, but I'm flexible if there are others that are coming from the burbs.

  • I live in the western suburbs. I try to avoid anything east of like, Elmhurst. LOL

  • For those of you who hate/refuse to come downtown, why is that?

I'm genuinely curious, because I LOVE being downtown and really wish we could afford a condo in Marina City. We live in Roscoe Village right now, and even that feels too far north for me. ;)

Is it the traffic? A hatred of the L? Too many people? Too far away? I swear I'm not being judgy.

Yes. I've only driven downtown once and I didn't like it at all. I also cannot parallel park. I've been on the L once and I was not a fan. I'm an old country lady in a young suburban's body because I'm convinced every single person downtown is there to mug me. I rarely go downtown for anything other than a Bears or Hawks game and I almost always take the train.

  • I HATE the city. The traffic, all of the people EVERYWHERE, the smell... yuck! Hahaha, it's just not for me - I actually wish that I was further into the country.

But my reason for perferring a GTG outside of downtown/the loop is that it's quite far for me as it is, and the parking is horrendous. And i'm not a city girl, so trying to figure out public transportation alone is really scary for me. (Yep, i'm a big baby)
  • Okay, yeah. You have a point about the smell. ;) That is one thing I don't like about the city, but I love everything else (I don't drive, so the traffic is moot).

I get the different strokes and understand where you're coming from. I don't like small towns. I'm more of a city mouse than a country mouse, so it's always fun to discuss the differences with the country mice. :)

(OMG, I typed "country mouses". What the hell...)
  • What are you talking about? The city smells like chocolate thanks to Blommers.

    ;-)

I'll give you the driving though. Freaks me out. I take public transportation as much as humanly possible and DH drives if we go anywhere without a Metra stop.

Definitely different strokes- I grew up in the country (aka rural Woodstock) and love it out there for the peace and quiet, and I love the hustle and bustle city, but I'm not a fan of the regular suburbs at all.

Welp, that's weird. I'm in Woodstock right now (work)! And I live one town over, in Crystal Lake.

P.S. The city smells like farts, AT ALL TIMES. Hahahaha

I love the city for a night out type of thing, but otherwise, meh.

That being said, I would totally come to a GTG in the city.
  • I have to agree about the smell. I don't always notice it but FI will comment when we're downtown especially. He says " it smells like fart/ poop"

Going downtown doesn't bother me, but I honestly have no choice given that my classes are down there. The L is how I usuusually travel but we have my car also, driving in the city is a PITA but sometimes it's easier than multiple transfers on the CTA.

  • I've lived by all of the wonderful Chicago smells:

Lemonheads from Ferrara Pan (Oak Park/Forest Park area)
    Blommers Chocolates (downtown)
    Tootsie Rolls (southside)

It's pretty sweet. I don't have strong preferences about where we meet. I live in the far southwest burbs but work in the loop a few days a week- and those days are usually pretty flexible. I grew up on the L (my dad worked for the CTA when I was tiny so we grew up riding) and love it. I drive but try to avoid doing so.

I've found the perfect alternative to parallel parking downtown: SpotHero. It's usually cheaper than metered parking and you're in a lot!

I didn't know AJ existed until you said something and I Googled it.  That should tell you what kind of crowd I'm in. But it looks cool!

(I'll seriously try anything within reason. I can go up to $$$, but not $$$$, and I'm totally happy with $.)

What about Boss bar?? They actually re- modeled it and its nice inside now. We could have some gauc and a marg. And its a bit easier on the wallet.

  • I love that downtown smells like chocolate! I've lived in Lakeview/Lincoln Park forever and going downtown really doesn't phase me. I definitely won't drive if I don't have too (downtown traffic plus no parking). But downtown is so fun for me! I actually don't know any suburbs at all, other than like Evanston and Oak Park haha.

As for type of meet up spot, I'm a dive bar girl myself. And tacos. Lots of tacos.

So maybe Moe's cantina? I think a spot in the loop in River North would be easiest if anyone is coming from the burbs because there are parking garages and valet parking all around.

    Do have a date yet?

I think we were saying sometime between 14th-23rd? Are we limiting this to weekends, or are after-work midweek happy hours and option? My birthday is the 21st so I'll prolly be out that night doing something fancy with DH. :-)

  • I'm more in favor of a happy hour myself, but understand that may be difficult for those coming from outside city limits. Plus, there are happy hour specials to be had, which is helpful on the wallet.

I just had happy hour at Cafe Laredo; they have half price tacos and apps in their second floor bar. It was great! I'd take that over Moe's now, for sure.  Boss is definitely easy on the wallet yet I haven't been there since the remodel.

Two days I don't get off till 6 the other three I get off at 5. Weekends I'm wide open. But I know some people arent

I work near Blommers and yes, all I smell is chocolate. I live in Ravenswood, which apparently must be like Evanston to some of you suburbanites :)
Moe's Cantina is good to me too...Rock Bottom is also a good bet, but it's on Grand off of Michigan Ave.

Fun fact: Chicago doesn't have happy hours, only daily specials: http://www.thrillist.com/entertainment/chicago/chicago-happy-hour-ban

You're right! Very true- I just always call "after work drinking" 'happy hour' because I lived in Michigan too long to ever get out of the habit.

But I bet cantina Laredo does taco Tuesday! I love that place- they have really good fish tacos and gigantic table-side guacamole.

  • I still call convenience stores "party stores", and people get so confused. They think I mean a store that sells balloons, hats, and streamers.
  • Also, I think downtown smells like urine, not farts. It wafts up from the L tunnels, and it's even worse while down there, especially on a humid day. Ugh.

The only thing I like about winter is that most of the smell goes away. I think it's because the snow covers/washes the alleys and streets.
  • I'm hoping all you wonderful Ladies have had a chance to look at your very busy calendars, so that we can see whether a weekend or a weekday would be a better day to meet.  Is there anyone who is completely against Friday the 14th or Saturday the 15th.  Or would the weekend after be better?

Ironically, I just got a B-list invite to a wedding that weekend, which will require Friday night travel. (We're super excited; it's a coworker-friend and we know how that's often the first circle cut. Etiquette faux pas but it'll be a fun weekend regardless.)
If that's best for everyone else I'll miss you! Otherwise... I'll keep an eye on the thread.

Both of those days are a no- go for me. If that works for everyone else, then we'll just have to plan another GTG soon!
