Name Change

Re: Name Change

  • My fiancé has a long, hard-to-spell four-syllable Polish surname (one of the -skis) and I have a very common but three-syllable one, so I never considered hyphenating because it wouldn't fit anywhere and would be a huge mouthful. Same with any middle-name type things.

His name means a lot to him and his family and mine doesn't really to me or mine, so I decided to take his even though it's going to cause me to spend my life pronouncing and spelling it to everyone. But he and his dad were so thrilled when I told them, so I'm willing to live with the inconvenience.

If he didn't care, though, I would have just kept mine, I think. The changing is a hassle. And in your place, OP, I'd probably keep the names because they are significant for you.

  • I think I am going to keep my maiden name, and add his without the hyphen.   I never use my middle name, so it can stay there.

I figure this way I can be Mrs. xyz but still use my maiden name when I feel the need. Just knowing its there makes me feel better, even if I don't use it.

I'd love to just make my maiden name my middle name but that's not easily done in NY (yet...I hear they're working on it...).
  • You totally should keep your maiden name or any part of your name if you want! I have to a certain extent and yes, he did raise a bit of a fuss... I wrote a whole blog post on it here. Have a read!
