Did anyone else cheer when they heard Honey Boo Boo wasn't coming back on the air? I never watched the show but I was unfortunately well aware of it, and the fact that it got cancelled somewhat restored my faith in humanity. I understand that it was cancelled over the sex offender issues, but still. It's gone and that makes me happy.
Honestly, all the sex offender stuff surronding it leaves me feeling sick to the stomach, and I'm not sure how much money Junes given to the douchebag, so I feel like the kids are once again getting shafted.
I never watched Honey Boo Boo because I felt it was exploitative and mean spirited- as in "we" all watched it to gawk and make fun of such a white trash family, and they didn't necessarily get that we were laughing at them.

I had no idea about any of this until now, but holy shit ><

  • I think that show promotes mental abuse towards women, and I think it is far more dangerous than the stupid Kardashians or Honey BooBoo (even though I would never watch those shows).  I mean on TV Michelle Duggar said "always leave yourself open to your husband." WTF. That goes a little beyond religious belief and more into the cult realm. I would say the same thing if there were a tv show about the Warren Jeffs' "church."

I respectfully disagree.  Granted, I don't watch any of these shows (my reallity preference is the Bachelor series), so I can't speak too intelligently about them.  But, based on the premise, I think shows like the Kardashians and HoneyBooBoo.  I think while there are aspects about the Duggar's faith that I find to be troublesome, I think a show about a family living happily together is more edifying than a show about a kid with attitude on the pageant circuit or a show about socialites.

Am I the only one who has hair envy of the Duggar girls? I never watch the show, so whenever these threads pop up, I have to Google the people in them. Holy crap their hair is perfect. Mine never curls like that. I think it's because I am being punished for living in sin before H and I got married. Damn...

If you had an army of stylists at your disposal every day your hair would look perfect too.

Yeah I'm not 100% sure on this, but I thought a stylist curled their hair. It isn't naturally curly.

I agree with that 100% and am a perfect example of that.  And my preference of the Duggars over the Kardashians is biased.  Let me explain ...

I know several families IRL who have 10+ children.  One of the families (I'll call them the House family) lived in our neighborhood and I was in the same grade as their 3rd eldest.  This family attended our church and we'd often joke about how many pews it took to hold their family.  As far as I know, at least 6 of the kids are now married with families of their own.  One of the kids is studying to become a priest, and the rest are in college or are young adults.

The House family is one of those families that you can't just help but love.  The kids were popular, friendly, funny, and athletic.  The kids were often voted to the Homecoming Court and the Student Council.

The House family is devoutly Catholic and doesn't believe in artificial birth control as well.  I don't think they ascribe to the Quiverfull movement, but I don't know that for a fact.  They lived in a nice house in nice neighborhood.  The kids drove used cars and the mom drove a van that became infamous in the neighborhood once the kids started going to college and adding their bumper stickers to the car.  So, they weren't irresponsible as far as providing for the family.

Mrs.House stayed at home and Mr. House owned a company.  They are one of the coolest, nicest, friendliest families I've ever met.  I would much rather have a family like them than the Kardashians.

Regarding this from the article you attached,

It's unfortunate that these passages are taken out of context.   I know of a Christian scholar who says that a woman should be upset by those first two passages.  It takes reading the other verses with it to understand the whole picture.

They are reality TV stars- they have make up artists and stylists that get them ready before every episode and before any TV or media appearance.  It's the same with anyone who is on TV or making a TV appearance.

I know I saw one episdoe where they did at home perms. But that was awhile back (like none of them were married)....there might have only been 16 kids at the time....

I work in reality TV. Yes if they appear on the Today Show they have hair & makeup. But as far as the day-to-day filming, they are responsible for their own hair & makeup. The only people who get always get hair & makeup are the celebrity hosts of a show, so Heidi Klum will get it on Project Runway, but the contestants don't.

ETA: Obviously people like the Kardashians have HMU before filming every day. Or the contestants on Celebrity Apprentice. But the shows about the "normal" people don't have HMU everyday. HMU costs a shit ton of money and our budgets don't allow for that stuff.

  • This is from their book, Growing up Duggar

    http://www.eonline.com/news/527792/growing-up-duggar-5-most-surprising-revelations-from-the-family-s-new-book

    1. Long Hair. God Cares: "Our hairstyle is our choice and we choose longer hair based on our understanding of 1 Corinthians 11:14-15…while it is a shame for a man to have long hair, a woman's hair is her glory."  The sisters keep their strands long for the Lord and take pride in the appearance of their locks, but they're quick to add spending two hours in front of the mirror trying to perfect their manes is absurd.

My roommate who regularly watches the show said they did an episode where they gave her a makeover. Apparently she looked rather pretty... but she didn't like it and immediately went back to this look. SMH.

For the first time in my life, I want to shave my head.
I just read this again and realized that by this rule, Jesus ought to have short hair.

I wonder how they feel about depictions of ol' Jesus with long hair. Shame-a-ronis.
