Wedding "themes"

@ClimbingBrideNY It actually took me a little longer than I anticipated -- I had been drinking mostly white wine over the summer, and she wanted the dark green bottles, so I had to switch to red for this request. I think she's spray-painting the bottles anyway, so I'm not sure why she couldn't use the clear glass ones.
I spray painted them too, and I had used a few white wine bottles. They all looked the same.
From what I've gathered this is going to involve spray painting them with sparkly white snow stuff. Maybe she's leaving some of the green exposed for... nature... stuff? IDK.

Kind of late to the party but our "theme" is just "us." The tables are gonna be named after places we've gone on vacation together, there's a hot air balloon on our STD and invitation cuz I have a hot air balloon tattoo, I've ridden in one, I'm obsessed with them, and it kind of goes along with the whole theme of our relationship of "adventures forever." (We love to travel and try new things and see the sights). We're not really doing a ton of decorations cuz the venue is already beautiful on its own. It's pretty much... come, have fun, drink, eat, love you guys for coming!
See, that's how you do it.

I had wine bottle centerpieces. Because we like to drink wine. And let me tell you, it was extremely hard to drink 30 bottles of wine for this vision.
Just kidding. I actually had too many bottles, and ended up not using all the ones I had saved.
Hahahahaha. One of my best friends is having a wine-themed shower next month, and over the summer she was like "Do you drink much wine? Do you think you could save me 5 bottles by September?"

Oh, girl. You have no idea.
    image

Have you been hittin' the wine already today my dear?
Nah... She asked me in August-ish to save bottles for her, so she'd have them by the end of September and she had time to DIY them before her shower in December.

Ahhhh ok. Makes sense. I'm woozy off lack of bagel.

Hahaha! 5 bottles is like a week.

I incorporated corks into our centerpieces too, and I had all my friends saving them for me. They're a bunch of damn winos too! I have a gazillion corks left over.
H and I being winos came in handy for our centerpieces too, considering I screwed up about half of them while I was DIYing. I have two giant pitchers of corks left over from the wedding as well. I'm going to attempt to make a giant "B" (married name) out of them for our bar.

That's OK. I did actually have a little baby glass of wine with lunch as a reward for finally taking the air conditioner out of the window, so I had to really think about it to make sure it did actually make sense, haha. Bustedddd.
  • @cupcait927 I love that idea! I definitely need to do something with the corks I've got.
  • We have a theme.  Sorry not sorry.

It's 'two less fish in the sea," because we met on PLentyofFish.com.  Does that mean we're dressing up like fish?  No.  Basically, our colors are beachy blues and greens and we'll have a fish motif on our invites and centerpieces.  And a kissing fish cake topper.  Otherwise, the theme is "get drunk and dance your asses off!"

  • I wanted wine bottle centerpieces, but H was concerned people would think we were winos. I saw nothing wrong with that, but since he asked for so little, I caved.

We did do wine cork holders for people's seating cards. I think it's funny because I had friends ask if they needed me to save corks. I even have one friend recommend I go to a restaurant to get them. H and I save all of our wine corks and have been together 4.5 years. I was definitely not concerned about running out of corks.

We have a similar thing--we want to incorporate some cool, vintage-y maps in the decor because we love to adventure (and I have a dorky obsession with maps, but that is separate. Sort of). I wouldn't call it a theme, but it's related to us.

lol I'm doing that too! I got "antique" maps of our home state with little hearts in the city where we met, the city where I commuted to visit FI while we were dating, and the city where we live together now (all over the place).
And the other map is of the US with a red dot on all the places we've traveled to, because we've been as far north as Canada, out to the Rockies, to the beach in North Carolina, and tons of places in between!

We had them dry mounted and FI is gonna use inexpensive molding from the hardware store to make a frame for them and then I'll just spray paint the molding to make it pretty :)

We have something similar in our house :) I'm coloring in all the states we've been to together.

  • You guys are all so creative.  I wish I could DIY.  Every time I try, I end up supergluing my fingers together.

We are thinking about having our tables be meaningful but fun things to us instead of numbers (like the Oxford Comma, Phish, Fire Island, Nashville, etc.)  But yeah, no like explicit theme other than "yay married food booze dancing awesome"

we have gold wine bottle centerpieces. I think I won FI over when he realized we'd save money on decor and get to drink it :)

  • @lolo883 @novella1186 FI and I want to do this for our home. Our cities are close-ish to each other (2 hours) but in different states, so we really want to make a fancy-looking map with hearts on his city & mine.

Who knows if I'll ever actually do this, because my DIY motivation is all but dead lately. I started knitting a super easy project like a month ago and it's still not done, either. It should've taken me a week at most, haha.

Yeah I've started tons of DIY projects for our wedding and after I get started I'm like "meh. I don't like this anymore." and quit. Our guest room closet is now packed full of my craft supplies. Whoops!

@prettygirllost I'm not sure. I pulled it off of pinterest. It looks like people have a lot of hunger games inspiration boards.

I agree with beeth though. Laughing at the berries. There were a lot of pictures with weapons involved. Just doesn't seem like something for a wedding...

    ...except maybe a "Red Wedding"?!
I feel like there are just a bunch of words that people pick and choose from like:

    Boho
    Rustic
    Chic
    Elegant
    Classic
    Traditional
    Luxurious
    Tasteful
    Sophisticated
    Modern
    Stylish
    Opulant
    Vintage

And it's like "pick three of these words and tack it onto the season you are getting married in"
This made me giggle. Can you make an assignment chart to save everyone planning time? "First letter of your first name, first letter of your last name, month you were born." BAM!

Then happy I, that love and am beloved

  • I kept using the word "vibe" we were going for a rock and roll party vibe. Not a theme. Basically it translated to deep bold colors and some day of the dead skulls.

  • Haha. it's definitely a weird word.

But, I think they might ask how are you decorating. Using rustic materials such as burlap and lace? Sitting on wood stumps or hay bales? Or are you decorating refined elegance with crystals and diamonds?

I had a "theme", sorry not sorry. It was chic summer elegance. whatever. it made all my wedding planning pages happy.

What does that even mean?  I'm just curious as to what you actually did, lol!

When people list their themes I often think this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuQNt45Cjkc

I think a PP nailed it when she said people confuse motif and theme.  Our "theme" was kind of like Beethery's but with a Victorian flair so as not to clash with our reception venue ;-)

It meant whatever I wanted it to :) it was never announced, just in my wedding planning binder of pictures and colors and craziness. It translated into crystals, diamonds, coral lights, giant white orchids hydrangeas, and white floating candles. Floor length gowns. Beautiful summer evening temperature.. White flowers in my hair. Oh yea and a long ass veil.

Go ahead make fun of me. It was a once in a lifetime theme binder.

  • We had a hockey themed wedding using our home team but we did it tastefully. None of the theme in the ceremony and there was only so much during the reception. The theme translated into our colors, cake, STDs, escort cards, and table numbers only.
I'm pretty sure we could have gone overboard with it if I didn't lurk on here first.

Back when FI and I first started talking about our wedding, I totally suggested seeing if we could have it at Consol Energy Center, haha. I don't think it would have been Penguins themed, and certainly not black & gold, but it would've been a cool venue, anyway.

Ours was Washington Capitals theme. Hockey was something that we both had in common so it felt natural to have that theme. I wish we could have gotten married at the Verizon center or kettler where they practice but H didn't want that, it was too far away from the church and I think our grandparents would have complained...
Also I think if there is a theme that means something to the couple then they should incorporate it. Again that's what we did.
  • Our theme was river rocks. We used them in the centerpieces, as escort cards, and had guests sign them instead of a guest book. And we had chocolate rocks in little buckets for favors.

  • Ours was "hydrangeas" there were hydrangeas on the cake, hydrangeas on the centerpieces and invites, hydrangea pins in my hair, the flowers for the bouquets and boutonnieres. imageimage

I am such a fan of themes. I'll admit it. I have no idea what the difference between "theme" and "motif" is. Our venue was a historic hotel, once named "The California", and with a huge old painted sign on the wall that said the same. We're obsessed with California history, so we made that our theme. We never made a crazy annoucenment "THIS WEDDING IS CALIFORNIA THEMED" and no one dressed up like a gold miner (although I wouldn't have complained). But we used the theme to make decorating decisions. I had the bridesmaids in gold (because, you know, California). I named each table after a California city, and then found vintage postcards from each city on eBay and used them in the centerpieces. We used Mexican tiles as our escort cards, and during dinner we played a bunch of California-themed songs. We served Mexican food and hired a guy to fry churros for a late night snack. I made California-themed cookies and chocolates for our welcome bags for out of town guests. We were secretly hoping for a Dodgers-Giants playoff game the night of our wedding, so we could have a late-night temporary tattoo table with LA/SF tattoos for our guests, a huge chunk of which were from LA, and another huge chunk of which were from SF, but the Dodgers let us down the week before. We tried to go California native plant heavy in our flowers. I don't regret it - it was a compass in an ENDLESS sea of wedding options. Plus, I theme all my parties because I'm crazy like that.

OMFG we planned my youngest sister's fantasy Penguin wedding!

The BM's would sit on the Home team benches, the GM's would sit on the Visitor benches.  Mike Lang would officiate and the game time organist would play music.  Jeff Zimmerman would sing.  As the ceremony wound down there would be an announcement, "One minute remaining in the ceremony!  One minute remaining in the ceremony!"  Then they would kiss, the goal sound would blare, and they'd ride off on a decorated zamboni.

  • So people keep asking me what my wedding "theme" is.  I keep responding "our theme is getting married?"

When I think of "themes" I think back to my Bat Mitzvah (Which for the record was the Carly Awards and hilarious.)  Or like kids birthday parties and being race car or magic (although magic would be awesome.)

Anyone care to enlighten me as to wedding themes and what they are?
This is what I say, too!!  If we do have a "theme" at all, I guess it would be DC, but that's mostly because we are getting married across the street from the White House.  I don't think scenery counts as a theme though haha
  • I asked my FI this weekend what the theme of our wedding should be.  His response was "boozy fall wedding awesomsauce?"
