Soooo basically, with 8 days to go, redipping is probably off the table before the wedding :-p
Jumping out of lurkdom to say that if you find a jeweler in your area that does it at their store it can be done in a day or two. My ring doesn't have a warranty and I wanted it redipped before my engagement pics so I just took it to a local jeweler in my area and it was done in less than 24 hours. She told me if I hadn't brought it in near the end of the day they could have done it same day. It cost about $70 and this was comparable to other smaller local jewelers in my area. It won't be something I do often due to the cost, but it made my ring look amazing!

I'm on mobile and I've never uploaded pictures this way so hopefully it works! And add me to the list of PPs who hate their hands.

I know my ring was paid in full, but I'm not sure how much it was. I've seen the appraisal paperwork but H told me that's not what he paid. I know how much my wedding band cost because I bought it.

Thanks, everyone! Our jeweler is local, but our schedule this week is pretty busy, and I don't think I want to risk having it not done in time. It's just good to know for the future.

What happened to your ring?? You must've felt naked. I have some idea what it cost. I'm sure he paid it off.

My jeweler doesn't do re-dips in-house, but mine was one in less than a week (they usually send the pieces out on Tuesday and get them back Thursday, but my schedule only allowed me to drop my ring off on Saturday). I was charged $35.

A diamond fell out of the band. I was devastated!

I'll soon be without my ring. I'm also sending it out to be redipped. I was told it will take about 2 weeks! I'll be going through major withdrawals. :-(

However platinum is a soft metal.. And if you have diamonds in the band, they can fall out very easily as the band mis-shapens.

Yep, this. I'm extremely rough on my hands. My jeweler could totally have upsold DH to platinum (that's actually what he originally wanted), but laid out why gold was a better choice for me - especially because he'd repaired some of my platinum jewelry in the past.

    1. Yay!

    2. See attached :D

    3. I have no idea how much it costs and no desire, but knowing FI, it was paid in full when it was purchased.

    2. attached (sorry for crappy phone pic)
    3. It was paid in full when purchased. I know what it was appraised for as well as what it cost. I don't care about that - I was so happy that FI picked out all by his lonesome something that I really loved too :)

    2. Not married yet but engagement ring, and bridal set. Engagement ring will become a necklace.
    3. FI and I picked my rings together. We also bought it together. I bought his wedding ring as a present. He chose it all by himself and it cost me £17!

I'm glad you got your ring back and that it's extra shiny now!

    Lovely rings ladies!

I attached a picture of my ring and pro-pic because I loved it. Fi designed the ring himself and it is perfect! My wedding band is the same designer as the band on my e-ring except it is about twice as thick.

FI wouldn't tell me what he paid but I have an idea. He made payments to our jeweler.

My rings are 19k white gold, which has the added benefit of not needing to be redipped. It cost more but I'm glad I won't have to send my rings away

    Yay getting your ring back!

I'm not sure exactly what my FI paid because it was a family ring (it was my grandmother's stone, my mom added the halo and had is set differently and then my FI and I had it reset and added the rest of the stones) nor do I really care.  Before my mom gave him the ring, I know he was planning on spending more to get me a new one but it doesn't really matter to me, I know I want to get just a thin diamond band for my wedding band (and we had it set so it will just slide right under.)  I do know what it's insured for though because I got the appraisal so we could get in insured.

I'm kind of a moron so I'm sorry if these pics are super huge or super small. The blue stone is my engagement ring (I wear it on my right hand now) and the other one is my wedding ring. The lady at the store tried to talk me out of it because it wasn't traditional and no one will know it's a wedding ring. Bitch it's a ring put on my finger during a wedding ceremony. Therefore, it's a wedding ring.

I do not know what the total for my ering was but I do know it was paid in full. H and I bought the center stone together and then he got the ring made. I know what the wedding ring cost because we picked it out together. Also paid in full.

    1. So glad you got your ring back!!!

    2. I think most of you have seen my ring!

3.I don't know the exact cost of my ring, but I can only imagine. I do know that DH did a bank wire to pay for it because I knew he didn't have a CC with that high of a credit limit. So, I asked how he made it happen. Since it was a bank wire, it was paid in full upfront.

@Jells2dot0‌ do you wear that when you travel? We insured my ring shortly after the proposal so I know if anything were to happen we'd be covered, but I would be REALLY bummed if something happened to it on vacation or something.

I do believe it's paid in full. Also on team #hatemyhands

Yay on getting your ring back!!!

Here are my rings.  The e-ring belonged to DH's grandmother, so no cost to him.  But, I do know what the appraised value was (for insurance purposes).

@dallasbetch Yes, I do wear it when we travel. The only time I did not wear it on travel was when I went to Fiji in 2010. I had just gotten engaged and did not have the insurance in place. When we went to the Seychelles/Mauritius via Johannesburg, I flipped my diamond into my palm so it was not visible while we were in J'burg. We pay ~$500/year for the insurance, so I want to get my money's worth out of it! LOL

I do not wear my rings to bed, in the shower, or when just bumming around the house. I also try to not wear them at the gym, but that only works when I go from home. If I go on my way home from work, I'm just extra careful not to bang them on the weights.

    1. Yay for like new sparklers!

    2. I'm six-ish weeks out, so I guess this still applies. Plus I love my nails in the photos! One is E-ring with band, other is band alone.

    3. I do know. DH was talking about our jeweler and how he gave DH a discount for paying in full and in cash. Plus our jeweler doesn't do payment plans, he got burned before so only does all cash.

I know (pretty much) how much mine cost and H paid for it in cash. I love it.

I bought the band at a wholesale shop in the diamond district (NYC'ers, they have GREAT prices). I wanted something that looked good solo and it only cost $350.

    image
I love your band! (E-ring too, but I'm not in the market for one of those). Good to know about the diamond district--Fi might be resistant since a guy gave him a bunch of crap when he was e-ring shopping (I believe the guy's exact words were, "She'd be crazy to take you for less than two carats." Wut.) But a deal is a deal, and if I can get one as pretty as yours I'll be all about it!

I was about to ask WTF a redip is but mine is platinum too, so that saves that Google search.

I have a great guy in the diamond district if you want.  he's not one of the super aggressive guys in the stores on the street (like you have to make an appointment to see him) but he did the resetting on my ring and actually did a friend of mine's engagement ring as well.  The guy who my dad got my mom's new stone from recommended him (my brother got engaged the same year as my parents 30th anniversary so my sis in law now wears my mom's original stone which was my dad's moms and my mom got a major new ring.)  We will be going to him for my wedding band next year.  Message me if you want the info!

Except... not. Alloyed platinum is softer than alloyed gold, and with impacts the metal will be displaced causing minute "scratches" that make for a soft greyish/silverish patina, so over time it will most certainly lose it's intense shininess.  But at a hard impact it will bend instead of break. When it bends, it is very likely to still hold the diamond in the prongs, which is why most jewelers recommend platinum prongs even with a gold/ white gold setting. Gold and white gold are hard and generally fare well against most impacts and may not scratch too easily, but they wear away over time as they are rubbed against softer things. As the metal slowly wears away, golds are even more prone to breaking, as at a very hard impact even new gold will break instead of bend, making it more likely to lose a diamond. A broken prong is more likely to lose a diamond than a bent prong.

Though of course both are durable, lovely metals. It will take years for white gold to wear down and need to be replaced, and it is rare for platinum to actually bend. Platinum is not a super soft metal that will lose diamonds left and right, just like white gold and gold are not actually easily breakable.

Oh! And to answer the original question: My center diamond was given to me by my mom, and since I shopped for the setting with FI, I do know how much the rest of it cost.  He paid the deposit (about half) when we picked it, and then he paid the rest of it in full when it was made and given to him.

I'm okay with putting things on a financing plan as long as it is paid off within the 0% time frame.

And I need to go shopping for a wedding ring! At first I thought... thin plain platinum band. It will be less expensive, and will look very classic next to my engagement ring. But then I thought... maybe pave diamonds to match because that will look "better" by itself if I stop wearing the engagement ring at some point. And then I thought... but I don't want the wedding band to blend together with the engagement ring and look like one ring, so maybe a dot and eye shaped diamond band for interest ... or a twisted band or.... AHH! I love them all. Fiance is going to go batty when I drag him shopping a million times :)

@lilacck28 That is gorgeous! I love marquise stones.

I'm having similar decision-making issues about wedding bands, and I'm starting to drive myself crazy. I've narrowed it down to one company in particular that makes custom bands, which I definitely need because I can't find regular bands to sit flush (or even close) to my e-ring, but they have soooooo many options! I can get any of their bands custom-fit, and I keep changing my mind like every other day.

Thanks @esstee33 ! I didn't think it would be so mind boggling picking out pretty things, but turns out my neurosis does not stop for anything, ring shopping included! Good luck with the custom band! I would love to see what you decide to go with!
