Good luck! That's still very exciting! Maybe the travel got exaggerated, or maybe the travel requirements have changed, you never know.

I'd love to have to travel somewhere cool for my job, but that's because it's been over 2 years in this city and I'm bored.

That's what really stinks... a few years ago, I would have LOVED a travel-heavy job. Even now I'd like to go to cool places ONCE, just not all the time. Still better to have this opportunity now BEFORE there are babies involved... but I want the babies. :(
I would've killed for a travel-heavy job too. And I was actually offered one a few months ago. It was with my same company and I would have made a lot more money. BUT I would have had to switch from my awesome boss to a new boss who I already know, and the general consensus around here is that she's a total vindictive bitch. She's been nasty to me plenty of times, and I don't even work for her! And I know other people who are in that position. A few of them have quit recently. Apparently the workload is ridiculous and they got burned out quickly and couldn't take it anymore, plus they were pretty much working 7 days a week every week, and late nights.

I was so sad to turn down the offer. It was NOT an easy decision. But I realized I would probably burn out too, sooner or later, and having that mean lady as my boss would make me completely miserable. It's just not worth it to be miserable at your job every single day. So here I sit, at my same desk, dicking around on the Knot.

@lolo883- Totally! Babies make things harder for sure. But I'm sure if you get the job they'd be able to work something out with you. I don't have kids and am not planning on having any probably ever, but if that changes not for at least 10 years. Plus my company has tons of offices all over the world with travel opportunities...but I think I need to get a more senior position for those opportunities, haha.

@novella- ahh! Good call on passing that up! A good boss makes all the difference, it's crazy. Not the same thing, but I used to work for a startup and the hours were just ridiculous; I vowed never to work in that environment again unless something was worth it- pay, great boss, etc, or else why bother?

  • Good for you for applying! First step in improving your situation, and worth at least exploring the opportunity before you decide it wouldn't work. No sense in talking yourself out of a better job now due to future semi-hypothetical babies! :)

And, if you stay in your current role and and do TTC, all that stress and anxiety might not make that any easier!

    Good luck!
  • Try to look at the exciting potential this job would have! There are a lot of "what ifs?" in life. This could be your big opportunity! I'm glad you applied!

  • This is cheesy as all hell, but I tend to keep fortune cookie fortunes that really resonate with me, and I'd totally forgotten until just now that I have this one taped to my cubicle wall, and it just seems so appropriate:

"May your faith always exceed your fears -- no price is too great to go through life afraid."

That's also awesome about the other position your friend recommended you for!!

    Excellent point.

So I told my friend who works for this company that I applied for that job, and she said "oh why'd you do that? There's a better position on this other team that sits on my floor, and the hiring manager is my mentor. Send me your resume and I'll recommend you for that." Um, OK!
    NETWORKINGGGGG!!!!

  • Good luck! I'm in a similar spot with my job right now, I've hopped around to 4 jobs in 7 years and it looks kinda shitty on my resume so I'm trying to stick it out here even though I dislike it. Have you considered that under federal law you are only eligible for FMLA if you've been at the company for 12 months? Some companies have their own policies and cover you after 3- 6 months, but a lot of companies also base how much time is paid on how long you've worked there. So it might be beneficial to stay put until you have a baby, because a new job could deny you leave or paid leave. But anyway, good luck, hope it works out either way!

  • Go. "Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing at all."
Take risks now. Soon (I hope/think) you will have adorable wonderful small people in your house that you won't want to leave.
So go for it. You H obviously loves you and supports you, so go balls to the wall and take chances. No regrets.

  • I meeeeeeeean seriously? Like, OMG!
What I meant is adding up to the time on a plane, plus the time in another country, jet lag, add it all up, it will be a bitch. But hey, that is my opinion and you care little about it.
I know fractions are hard, but, dude, it was an expression. Anyhow, I hope it goes as you wish. To tell you the truth nobody deserves to be miserable at their job.

I'm a little drunk, not gonna lie. But this sounds like unwarranted hostility. Maybe I'm missing something. Ps. Fractions ARE hard.

ETA: Travelling for work sounds like the bomb. I would also love to have a job like that. I suppose it's better to take the chance now?

Yes, this! Also, when the time comes - things always tend to work out for the best. I say take your chances and que será, será!

  • Yay that's perfect then! See I don't really have an "industry". I do accounting but I've done it for medical company, cardboard box company, insurance company, tech company so the standards are all over the place when I go somewhere new!

When I was 23 I applied for accounting for a national restaurant chain where I'd have to travel one week a month to different sites across the US. I was super bummed that I didn't get the job! But now with my house and husband I wouldn't want to do that. Hopefully you get to interview for that second position she mentioned!
