Not Engaged Yet

Re: .

  • Do you love or loathe the phrase "Engagement Season"?
It's kind of the truth, so I don't mind it.

Do you love or loathe the engagement ring commercials and all of the craziness that come along with this time of year?
This may be the first year I loathe them. Simply because I know I'm not gonna get proposed to. I knew it last year too, but I was more okay with it back then because we hadn been together as long!
How do you answer the awkward friend and family questions about when you plan on getting engaged? (You know...because that is something you can always decide. haha).
Oh my freaking God. This is the worst. I never hear BF get asked that question, but people ask me around him all the time!...... Mostly I just say "Maybe next year".... My grandma didn't even ask. She just said "You know, there's paperwork you can fill out for that."
Do you have anything else to add?
No. But having two ladies on here get engaged within a week had me a little BSC on the inside. Nothing has worked its way to the outside, though. Just gotta keep reminding myself that he's not a surpriser.

It sounds like BF's asshole brother is gonna propose to his GF that he treats like shit, most likely on Christmas when everyone is around. If I'm there for that, it will be really tough to fake excitement. They are a truly horrifying couple.

  • I can't think of a single IRL friend who got engaged during "engagement season". And I don't really watch TV (I watch Netflix and lots of stuff online) so I don't see the commercials for engagement rings any more often than I see them throughout the rest of the year. So "engagement season" doesn't really bother me at all because I don't really see it at all in my life.

As for questions from family and friends, I just change the subject. It isn't any of their businness.

  • I didn't know "engagement season" was a thing until last year when 3 friends of mine got engaged on Christmas Day. The phrase doesn't really bother me at all. I don't mind those awkward questions, I usually just say "I don't know, we'll see" because that's the truth. What I do hate is when my SO's father introduces me to people as his son's WIFE or as his daughter in law! Dude I am not his WIFE...yet. SO frustrating. Oh, as for the commercials don't mind them either as I spend free time browsing rings sometimes myself...

  • I can't think of an IRL friend who got engaged during "engagement season" either. Really during the holidays I see more jewelry commercials in general, not just for engagement rings.

    hahahaha I love that photo!

Do you love or loathe the phrase "Engagement Season"? I didn't realize there was an engagement season, I'm so used to seeing my facebook blow up with engagements, weddings, and babies everyday.  So I guess it doesn't bother me.

Do you love or loathe the engagement ring commercials and all of the craziness that come along with this time of year? Holiday crazies in general bother me.  But it is a pretty season with the snow and lights, so it does bring out the romantic in me

How do you answer the awkward friend and family questions about when you plan on getting engaged? (You know...because that is something you can always decide. haha). Most people know better than to ask me because I will say something snarky.  Last year on New Year's everyone was asking bf in front of me when he was going to propose.  His response, "She's the boss and is shaking her head no."   (My rule is we need to live together at least a year to make sure I won't kill him, but no one else needs to know that).

This past Friday we had Friendsgiving (thanksgiving with friends).  Two of our friends have kids, and the one is 4 months old.  So of course everyone was passing the baby around.  When I was holding the baby, everyone kept telling me I was a natural and kept asking when I was going to have a baby.  Right now I'm the perfect aunt, I spoil, play, and when the kid cries or needs a diaper change they get handed back to their parents.  Well one of the guys didn't agree and told me, my clock is ticking so I better hurry up and have a kid soon.  He's lucky I was holding a baby or he would have been hit, instead he just got evil eyes.

Do you have anything else to add? ugh I had a gif here but it is showing a broken link.. hopefully it works now

  • Do you love or loathe the phrase "Engagement Season"?

I don't mind it...though while proposing over the holidays is cliche, I don't know anyone IRL who got engaged over the holidays.

Do you love or loathe the engagement ring commercials and all of the craziness that come along with this time of year?

I hate commercials in general.  I mute them all because I watch tv to watch tv, not to listen to advertisements.  The craziness...well, it's par for the course around here.

How do you answer the awkward friend and family questions about when you plan on getting engaged? (You know...because that is something you can always decide. haha).

I got engaged young, so that was never really an issue for me.  I DO get the "when are you going to have babies" question ALL.THE.TIME.  And I'm usually nice about it and just say, "We're not ready yet, but maybe soon."

Do you have anything else to add?

All this talk of engagements makes me stare at my ring.  It's a pretty ring.  Teehee.

  • Do you love or loathe the phrase "Engagement Season"? - No opinion on it, but it's the truth. A friend of mine got engaged this past week, as did a friend of FI's, and my stepsisters' stepbrother did as well.

Do you love or loathe the engagement ring commercials and all of the craziness that come along with this time of year? Well... I hated it last year because I was NEY... but we got engaged on  Christmas Eve so I'm all good this year, lol.

How do you answer the awkward friend and family questions about when you plan on getting engaged? (You know...because that is something you can always decide. haha).

We actually never really dealt with this.

Do you have anything else to add?
     nope.

  • Do you love or loathe the phrase "Engagement Season"?  We got engaged Nov 9, so I guess we were at the beginning of 'Engagement Season'.  There was no reason for it other than that's when we had all our ducks in a row.

Do you love or loathe the engagement ring commercials and all of the craziness that come along with this time of year?  I don't have an opinion.  I really don't care for the rings on the commercials.

How do you answer the awkward friend and family questions about when you plan on getting engaged? (You know...because that is something you can always decide. haha). I can't really remember other than the answer was 'When we're ready' or 'When we get around to it'.  Few people really asked us.  I will say now that we're married more and more people are asking about babies and kids.

Do you have anything else to add?  I sometimes wonder if people get engaged this time of year because it's easier to tell family all at once during Christmas and Thanksgiving.

  • Oh, on the awkward questions: last year I handled them by keeping my wine glass topped off at now-FI's Christmas gathering. Or they topped off my wine glass for me. I can't entirely remember which. There was a little less pressure for some reason, maybe since we were house-hunting. Either way, I can't recommend it as a coping mechanism.
  • I think the reason I tend to loathe the entire concept of "engagement season" is because I am in the bubble of college. Also, I am a senior this year, so all of the couples that were waiting to get married until after college are getting engaged. I think that age is a huge factor in noticing an  "engagement season" trend.

@keptinstitches I think I am going to have to bring a flask of alcohol with me to holiday parties this year. I like your thinking. haha. SO and I will not be getting engaged during 2015, but I definitely think this is the first year people think it might really happen because we are graduating. Thus, awkward questioning will most likely be prevalent and has already occurred a little bit.

@loves2shop4shoes, haha. I love your post. What does your ring look like again?

@Diginity100, I think a lot of people do get engaged during this time of year for that reason. Also, this time of year is really magical and exciting. Who doesn't love Christmas?

  • @justbeingme93, no no no no no no. Bad bad idea. I have no idea what I said on the wine - that's how drunk I was. Mid-afternoon Yahtzee was a special form of torture (of my own devising, let's be perfectly clear). Don't do it.
  • @KeptinStitches, I was absolutely kidding. I could maybe get away with it with my own family because we all enjoy a few glasses during Christmas festivities. However, I would be too nervous to pull any shenanigans like that with SO's family. I think I might just respond with, "It will happen when it happens."
  • The thing that annoys me most about "engagement season" is the focus that's placed on the sparkly ring and the over the top proposal instead of the love and the actual marriage. It just seems so commercial. The jewelry stores don't care if you're truly in love or ready to be married, they just want people to come spend money at their stores so they sale the dream of the fairy tale engagement. I guess I cant realisticaly expect them to do anything else other than try to make money, but it still annoys me.

Do you love or loathe the phrase "Engagement Season"?  I don't think I have strong feeling either way. I don't know anyone who got engaged during the holidays. I think it's sort of sweet since it's usually this happy magical pretty time, BUT I also think it's pretty cliché.
Do you love or loathe the engagement ring commercials and all of the craziness that come along with this time of year?  LOATHE. I hate how jewelry stores act like that ONLY time you can get engaged is at a holiday. From now until Valentine's Day it will drive me crazy. There was actually a radio ad last winter about how "If she was disappointed that you didn't propose at Christmas or New Years, this is your last chance". GTFO.
How do you answer the awkward friend and family questions about when you plan on getting engaged? (You know...because that is something you can always decide. haha). Never dealt with this, since we got engaged pretty quickly...no one had time to bug us about it! I got this a lot with my ex though, I usually replied with some variation of "when we feel we're ready", which we luckily never were!
Do you have anything else to add?  There is a chance a friend of mine might be getting engaged this year at Christmas or New Years, and I suspect she will be a bit pissed if it doesn't happen!

  • Do you love or loathe the phrase "Engagement Season"?  Eh, I mean I guess H and I got engaged mid-December of last year so technically we fell in "engagement season" but it certainly wasn't planned around a holiday event at all.
Do you love or loathe the engagement ring commercials and all of the craziness that come along with this time of year?  I feel like I hear them year round and they are all the same cheezy, corny, thing. I kind of like the BSC that starts showing up on this board sometimes though. That makes life a little entertaining.
How do you answer the awkward friend and family questions about when you plan on getting engaged? (You know...because that is something you can always decide. haha). We (or I) usually just responded that we weren't in any hurry and were taking our time. It was enough to shut people up.
Do you have anything else to add?  Not really. Whether your engagement happens during a holiday or not it's still special.

  • Do you have anything else to add?  I sometimes wonder if people get engaged this time of year because it's easier to tell family all at once during Christmas and Thanksgiving.
I'm sure that's a major reason. FI proposed to me then because (sneaky, sneaky) he had seen in a gchat I left open that I mentioned to my sister I always thought a Xmas Eve proposal would be awesome, but it was fantastic to know that I was seeing my whole family the very next day and could tell them all in person. I'm super close to my mom and sisters, and wouldn't have wanted to tell them over the phone, or have to wait too long to make plans to see them.

  • Hello! I'm a newbie/lurker, but I'd love to share.

    1. I don't terribly mind the phrase "engagement season". Whether people most often get engaged around this time of year or not, it's definitely a time where it's on a lot of people's minds (probably due to all those commercials)
    2. I don't really mind the commercials, they only bug me a bit because they're always crazy expensive rings, and I don't want my BF getting the idea that that's a requirement.
    3. Usually, when asked about my future engagement, I just say "I have no idea". My BF gets flustered though.

Interestingly enough, the family has shifted from "when are you getting engaged/married?" to "do you guys plan on having kids?" or even "when will you have babies?"

I've been with my boyfriend for going on 4 years, so the question of when we'll get engaged isn't too ridiculous. But it's a bit ridiculous that since we haven't gotten married yet, people just assume we'll skip that step and go straight for babies. It's also ridiculous because I'm only 21, in school, and my BF is between jobs. Do they really think that would be advisable? I certainly don't.
  • Do you love or loathe the phrase "Engagement Season"? - Not a big fan, but not to the point of loathe. Maybe it's like a pp said, part of it just has to do with age. Most of my circle is mid-late twenties, so engagement, wedding, and baby posts are a dime a dozen. Pretty sure everyone on Facebook except me is posting about one of those three things.

Do you love or loathe the engagement ring commercials and all of the craziness that come along with this time of year? Not a fan of commercials, well, ever. But I find the ones this time of year particularly obnoxious.

How do you answer the awkward friend and family questions about when you plan on getting engaged? (You know...because that is something you can always decide. haha).
Oh ,don't even get me started on this! BF and I are still a relatively new relationship, and while we both know we're heading that direction, we'll do it when the time is right! I'm not an old maid at 27, and contrary to the beliefs of my relatives, my uterus is not about to shrivel up thus making it impossible to have children! I'm the baby of the family, and as of Thanksgiving, the only one not engaged/married/pregnant.

Do you have anything else to add?
I really wish my relatives and customers, and people in general would learn to mind their own damn business.
  • I loathe the term especially when you are hoping to get engaged. I already know 2 people who got engaged. A lady who i work with her son just got engaged. Then my ex who said he would never date this girl got engaged.

Back story with my ex, we still talked a little bit after we broke up only talked. we both were at the same event i promised to help his mom before i broke up. That girl was there, and he said they were just friends and he would never date her. when i started dating my current bf, i told him I could not talk to him. i swear that same day he started dating her. now they are engaged and im pretty sure he talks to other girls and tries to get with them.

my bf said that once he got his income tax he could afford the ring. i told him her had to promise to py outright and not finance a ring. he did that with earring and it took him forever to pay back. and i told him if he paid more than 1k i would hurt him.

  • Do you love or loathe the phrase "Engagement Season"?

Eh.  Doesn't really bother me, but I don't love it.

Do you love or loathe the engagement ring commercials and all of the craziness that come along with this time of year?

I secretly love it all.  I'm a huge sappy romantic, and the Christmas-Valentine's Day window gives me a perfect excuse.  I will watch Love Actually at least once a week from now until Christmas.

How do you answer the awkward friend and family questions about when you plan on getting engaged? (You know...because that is something you can always decide. haha).

Grrr...this one is really tough for me, because we basically sat down and had a conversation that said "Let's get married," and set a rough timeline (which his job then proceeded to screw up)...but there hasn't been the big elaborate proposal and I don't have an "engagement ring"--just a simple band that I got while he was deployed and wear on my left ring finger.  And my family...just don't get it.  Both of my sisters had big elaborate total-surprise proposals, and they just don't quite get the whole situation.  So I tend to say "Whenever we can be in the same place for more than a week at a time" to sort of joke about it and avoid the whole explanation.  Knowing him, he'll probably go ahead and do something to surprise me at some point, but I'm not especially anxious about when or how, so I don't want to convey that I am, you know?  I'm the oldest in a family of people who tend to get married young (Grandmother was 18, Mom was 20, Sister 1 was 21 and Sister 2 was 23...I'm 28), so I get the questions ALL the time.

Do you have anything else to add?

Maybe a different perspective--I have bipolar disorder, and the holidays used to be really, really difficult for me, especially because of "engagement season"--I felt so alone, and isolated, and like nobody could ever love me.  This is the first year that I can remember that I haven't felt bone-crushing depression beginning about mid-November.  It's a wonderful relief, but it leaves me really aware that these aren't easy times for a lot of people.
  • Do you love or loathe the phrase "Engagement Season"?

Honestly, this is the first year that it has actually bothered me. That's only because I know that BF has the ring and he asked my father for his permission/blessing on Thanksgiving (Dad said yes and told my mother in the car in front of me and BF!!!!!!!!! Okay, happy dance over haha), so I know that he plans to propose soon-ish, and now I have to deal with all forms of media throwing engagements in my face. It's making it a bit difficult to not go BSC. It's also why I needed a break from TK for the past week (didn't want to see anything wedding related at all).

Do you love or loathe the engagement ring commercials and all of the craziness that come along with this time of year?

I cannot stand all of the commercials (at least, not this year). They are on TV, the radio, and on billboards. It's really difficult to block out and not think about when the ads are everywhere.

How do you answer the awkward friend and family questions about when you plan on getting engaged? (You know...because that is something you can always decide. haha).

Considering that I have zero control over when BF will propose, I tell them that they need to ask him and leave it at that. I was very surprised by how many family members on both sides kept asking if we have planned anything yet. I think I said the phrase "No, we are waiting until we are actually engaged." about 20 times last week.

@AuroraRose41, I agree with you that the commercials, of all types, make it difficult to avoid a hint of BSC coming to the surface. I was a cool cucumber about being patient and being totally comfortable just embracing my time with my SO as boyfriend and girlfriend. Once the commercials started, I honestly have felt some jealousy bubbling up. I need a hefty dose of reality!
  • Do you love or loathe the phrase "Engagement Season"?
I hate it. I am 99% sure I am getting engaged during engagement season, which I hate. I feel like such a cliche. Also, it  makes me feel like I am going to have to rush to book a venue since we want to get married in Sept 2015.

Do you love or loathe the engagement ring commercials and all of the craziness that come along with this time of year?
OMG- there is nothing worse than watching a football game with my bf with all of of e-ring commercials. It feels like watching a sex scene in a movie with my parents. We both are pretending it's not happening, but we know it is.

How do you answer the awkward friend and family questions about when you plan on getting engaged? (You know...because that is something you can always decide. haha).
Luckily my mom has said nothing. My aunts have flat out asked me and I say "We'll let you know!". My bf's grandma keeps asking over and over and over again (she is a bit senile). He told her that shew ill be the first to know. I am going to insist that he calls her first after he proposes.

Do you have anything else to add?
Now that I know that a ring has been ordered, I feel a lot more comfortable, but if I was in the same place I was a few months ago- this "engagement season" would be hell on earth.

  • Do you love or loathe the phrase "Engagement Season"?
I don't really have a comment on this. I guess I don't notice it much more than the rest of the year? So, neutral.
Do you love or loathe the engagement ring commercials and all of the craziness that come along with this time of year?
    I love them!
How do you answer the awkward friend and family questions about when you plan on getting engaged? (You know...because that is something you can always decide. haha).
Mostly just laugh it off, like 'Oh haha, well you know, eventually'. Or 'Oh haha, well we just bought a house so, maybe in a bit' or something.
    image
  • @AuroraRose41 - Yay for being another step closer to getting engaged! That's so funny that your dad told your mom about it in front of the two of you! It sounds like something my dad would do.

  • @bethsmiles thanks! I was definitely caught off guard, and my mother just about had a heart attack from excitement.

  • Considering we just went ring shopping this weekend, I'm alright with it. I agree for the pragmatics out there, it's mostly the timing to announce at the holidays - which is what BF says he wants for next year. Adverts don't bother me much because yum, shiny things. :)  The only questions so far have been from my mom, but I don't mind entertaining and/or being honest.
  • Do you love or loathe the phrase "Engagement Season"?
I suppose I don't mind so much. I didn't even know it was a thing before. But if it's true, it's true. People are getting engaged around now.

Do you love or loathe the engagement ring commercials and all of the craziness that come along with this time of year?
I actually like them. I like seeing all the pretty rings. I'm a dork.

How do you answer the awkward friend and family questions about when you plan on getting engaged? (You know...because that is something you can always decide. haha).
I haven't even gotten any because we just started dating and people seem to think that also means we just met. We've been best friends for years, guys. Everyone else has seen this coming. But the people that HAVE seen this coming haven't asked because they're clever people and know we'll get to it when we get to it.
  • Do you love or loathe the phrase "Engagement Season"?
I don't think I ever noticed it.  I don't really know anyone who has gotten engaged this time of year (weirdly most of my friends have gotten engaged in the summer.)

Do you love or loathe the engagement ring commercials and all of the craziness that come along with this time of year?
I hate commercials of all kinds, I hardly ever watch anything in real time because of that.

How do you answer the awkward friend and family questions about when you plan on getting engaged? (You know...because that is something you can always decide. haha).
Before I was engaged, I would just say "I'll be sure to let you know when it happens!"  And most people do have timelines on when they plan on getting engaged so it's not a ridiculous question.  My FI and I didn't, we had discussed getting married and knew it was an eventuality but I didn't expect it for another 6 months to a year.  He told me he just decided he didn't want to wait any longer for me to know he wanted to marry me, asked my parents and proposed the next week!
