High School Reunion

Re: High School Reunion

  • Honestly I will never go to a reunion. I hated grade school, I was bullied from elementary to my senior year in high school. You couldn't pay me to go.

@CMGragain, I'm talking about people who routinely beat me up, threatened to kill me, threatened to rape me straight (wtf?), keyed my car, and referred to me solely by Fucking Dyke. Not about popular cheerleaders who wouldn't let me sit with them at lunch.

I don't care how mature they are. I don't want to be friends with them.
    Oh, hell no!

It is a bit hard for me to go to my high school reunion.  I went to four different high schools.  The main reason I go is that my DH was also from my graduating class, and he wants to go.  He was the nerdy president of the rocket club for four years.  The captain of the football team weighs 300 lbs. and has been divorced three times.  Nerdy DH did well, retiring at age 55 from electronic engineering.
At my last reunion, I had a crew cut that was just growing out from chemo.  Everybody was nice about it, but I was embarrassed.

  • I've been to 3, my 5 year, my 10 year, and my 20 year.  I don't think I'll go to any more.  But - the best one was just at a bar and grill, no cover charge, you just ate and drank and paid your tab as usual.  They also had a dance floor if you wanted to dance.  The other 2 were pay by head and were pretty lame.  I see the people I want to see, so I won't go to another one.

  • I didn't go to mine because I hated my school, I hated the teachers, I hated the other girls. I have zero good memories of that place and those people. No fucks given. I would probably have gone to the reunion of my first high school if I could've, but I don't think they actually had one, and if they did I wasn't invited, which is fair because I didn't graduate there.

We did go to DH's (and spontaneously got engaged on the way home), but only because DH's two besties from high school decided at the last possible moment that they would be going and then guilt-tripped him into going. It was kinda fun in the end, though more the socializing with the besties than the actual reunion.

It was a full weekend thing, (golfing, brunches, a pub-crawl etc) but we only went to the main event, which was dinner at some "fancy" lodge place. They kept costs for the dinner low by having a cash bar (after a welcome drink), and going with the venue's standard (very limited choices) buffet, and by making all the other events "pay your own way". Food ran out pretty early, but I think most people at least got something in their tummies. There were no banners or name tags or anything, and decor was basically non-existent.

I doubt that we'll go back for a 20th, his or mine, but we've got a long way to go still. I just don't see the point of going to a function where the entire point is to pretend to give two shits about what's happened to Mary-Sue Whatsherface who couldn't remember my name either and is having to pretend to give two shits about what's happened to me. Honestly, I have the people I care about (and who care about me) on Facebook, and we'll organize our own get-togethers.

Favorite reunion story:  I saw one of my friends (former prom queen), who smiled and waved.
"How are you doing? " I politely asked.
"Great!  I'm teaching at (university), and I really enjoy it."
    How is your family?"
    "Oh, we're divorced."
"I'm so sorry.  That must be hard on your son."
    "Oh, he's in jail."
At that point I just stared at her, not knowing what to say, and feeling like a fool.
"He'll be out in three years.  Conspiracy to manslaughter and concealing a body."

OMG!  AndI thought I had problems!

  • I talk to 2 people I went to high school with. My bestie asked if I was going to our school's reunion.

    "Nope."

    "Why not?"

"I have very low Taint tolerance, and I have to save up what I can for work."

  • Mine's coming up, a friend is planning a lot of it because she works at the high school. I wouldn't go but I usually try to go home over the summer and since one friend is planning it, I'm pretty sure my other friends are going. Outside of my friends, I didn't really know anyone else.

I have no idea what's happening but I hope it's a picnic at the lake or beach and then going to see a silly play that's been a town tradition for decades. That's what I would plan. Inexpensive, fun, family friendly, alcohol optional, low pressure.
