Lord of the Rings Wedding!

Hey there everybody,

So my fiance and I are going all out and having a Lord of the Rings wedding. When he proposed his exact words were "Alright, I have only one stipulation. We get married in Rivendell." And of course I was all for it. Well now we are a little less than a year out and planning is in full force. One of our issues is we want this to be Classy Lord of the Rings; we want all the theme and beauty that LotR offers, but not a costume party. We have come up with several cool ideas, for instance, we are having a white tree of Gondor which is going to be our wishing tree. We also are going to have our table cloths have the maps of middle earth printed on them. But I would seriously appreciate any ideas anyone else has, any input at all. I wasn't one of those girls that planned their wedding as a kid, I just new I wanted one haha. I have read so many cool ideas for other weddings on other boards and would love the input. Thanks everyone.

Re: Lord of the Rings Wedding!

  • I love the idea, with the caveat that too much will look like a kids birthday party. You're on the right track with avoiding costumes. I would keep the colors soft, with the exception of lots of green, particularly foliage. I really like the maps as tablecloths idea, since that's pretty subtle.

  • Thanks! Our colors are Forrest Green and Chocolate Brown with a burnt orange as an accent. I figured we can definitely pull off the theme without it being a costume party. There will be signs with quotes from the books/movies and some of our ceremony music is going to be from the movies. We are just so behind on ideas hahahha. We know what we want it to look like, just not how to put it into practice.
  • I agree with what @artbyallie said...and your colors scheme is definitely workable! Maybe use a LOTR-esque font for the invitations/place cards/signs/(anything that will have writing) also...

I'm not sure if I've ever heard of a wishing tree...what exactly is it?

  • Have you found a venue already? I think this idea sounds really lovely. While I liked the Lord of the Rings movies, I'm afraid I haven't read the books (yet) so I'm no expert. But Rivendell seems like a beautiful enchanted place and I can see why you have chosen such a theme for your wedding.

I absolutely agree with the comments that you need to be careful to avoid making it seem like a themed childs birthday party or costume party. I think focusing on the woodland elements: lots of greenery and wood for decor. Holding the ceremony outside in or at the edge of a forest would really help bring home the Rivendell feeling.

I would be inclined to aim for ethereal attire with hair worn down. Certainly a white wedding dress would be lovely, but so would a colorful dress.

I hope you'll share as you work on this.
  • Any way you can come up with a version if lembas for the cocktail hour?

My sister told me about it. A wishing tree is where your guests can hang little tags with well wishes for the bride and the groom on it. I thought it was an extremely cute idea.

We actually have. A lot of people told me that would be the hardest part, but so far that was the easiest. Both the ceremony and reception will be held at The Hayloft. Here are some pics of the venue: http://blshayloft.com/pictures.html. If you look at the ceremony pics we are using the circular field for the ceremony.

I will definitely be wearing my hair down. I have long naturally curly hair, which I am growing out even more for the wedding so that it looks very elvenish. hahaha

Actually, my family is half Sicilian, so we thought we could make Sicilian biscotti (which is closer to sugar cookies than the biscotti you see sold in stores) and wrap them up as lembas bread for the end of wedding favors. What do you think?
  • So I wanted to incorporate Lotr into my wedding as well... So my color scheme is the extended editions! The foresty green, deep red, and royaly blueish colors will be nice for a winter wedding with gold or silver (haven't decided yet...) as the accent. Haven't gotten much further than that. He's a gamer, so I do plan on using that somehow as well. :) oh, geek love! It's the best!
  • Can I just tell you that your wedding sounds my like my fiance and my absolute fantasy dream wedding? Ha! I second what someone said about trying to include some of the food inspired by LOTR. And that you can keep it "not costumey" by just using inspiration. The feeling you get and what you love about the "world" of LOTR. We are doing a harvest "theme", and are including that feeling of what I would imagine a Hobbits wedding to be like, ha! I am geeking out thinking about your wedding, I CAN'T wait to see your wedding photos and hear your ideas.

Another idea, include some of the music! Ahh!
  • UPDATE: Hey everyone,

Thank you so much for all of the ideas, and keep them coming. So here's the latest scoop, we originally had our wedding scheduled for October of 2015, but due to a family illness issue, we were forced to push it back. As much as I love the idea of a fall wedding (especially with our theme) we will now be having our wedding on the first of May 2016. It came down to sacrificing the venue or sacrificing the season, and our venue is just too perfect and the owners so sweet we couldn't give it up. So since they are all booked up for Oct 2016 and are only open from May 1 through the second week of Oct we opted to be the first wedding of their season. But now we must pick different colors to go with the spring theme. Luckily LotR is perfect for any season hahaha! We still have a lot of new planning to do and are starting somewhat from scratch.

Another idea we came up with (since we are super geeks) is possibly instead of narrowing it down to just LotR, make it a fantasy world wedding! We could include elements then from LotR, Game of Thrones, The Elder Scrolls, etc. We could have tables located in each of the worlds that we decide to incorporate. An idea I also came up with for those Game of Thrones fans out there is instead of a normal boutonniere for the Best Man is have them where the pin for the Hand of the King. Just little ideas like that.

Let me know what you think, and please keep hitting me with ideas.
  • I think you need green in your color scheme, and green, gold and cream would be perfectly fine for a spring wedding.

Also, I am in love with that headpiece larrygaga posted, (the green and gold one) and think you should get it.

I didn't even consider gold, but I LOVE IT and it sounds absolutely gorgeous! We definitely are keeping green (that's my favorite color anyway lol). I also love that headpiece and will have something like if not that exact one. I have long curly hair and I think that would look great with it.
  • You could name your tables after something LOTR, or even call your cocktail hour "elevenses" or "second breakfast" (depending on what time of day it is).
Also, you could have some fun with the seating chart - instead of escort cards you could make up a poster with LOTR scrollwork, or even the white tree in the middle.
I love this theme!  I did a medieval theme for my wedding, and some of my ideas might work well for you, depending how far you want to take it.  For example, instead of a coat (I had a winter wedding) I made my own cloak.  You can really do a lot with simple jewelery pieces, especially like the headpiece PP put up.

  • Oh my! This sounds like a gorgeous, and classy wedding. I love the location- it is perfection for everything you have planned.

I think when people think "theme wedding", they automatically assume it will be tacky. It sounds like your plans are the furthest thing from tacky. I love it!

Thank you! When I originally told my family we were doing a themed wedding, there were two reactions: What are you thinking?! and Can I come as a Hobbit, Wizard, etc? I just want the essence of Middle Earth there and any other fantasy worlds. This is not a kids costume party lol.

I definitely plan on it! I will be posting pictures of my bridesmaid proposal gifts within the next week.

ETF: I have no idea why my boxes always mess up.

Um... there are several threads on other boards regarding why this is a bad idea. Please don't give cutesy gifts when asking your bridesmaids, or at least ask first in person or on the phone (and not in a group setting) and get the yes
    before giving the gift.

  • I'm not great with names from the movies or the lines. But are there any romantic lines between aragorn & the character played by Liv Tyler that you can use as a quote on your invites or favors?

Also instead of traditional table numbers put the number plus the number written out in elfin (or whatever language it is they use in the movie)  so it would be 10  Ten

Yup yup. Way ahead of you. Before I even made my gifts, I preemptively asked all my girls if they "could" and "would" be one of my maids. I would feel awful if I made a gift for someone and they felt obligated to say yes just because I made them a gift. I have all but one handed out and the girls loved them. I have been sick the past week, but I will be putting up pics shortly!
  • Cool, looking forward to it! Are you going to see Battle of the Five Armies this weekend? I have an almost-finished Tauriel costume I'm going to wear when we go.

  • I will be going to see The Battle of the Five Armies, but not until after Christmas sadly. But I still can't wait to see it.
  • Hey Everybody! Now that all of of my bridesmaids have been officially asked I can now post pictures of there proposal gifts. They are mostly DIY. All of the designs, pictures and names you see on the wood were hand burned into the wood by a dear friend and myself. All of my girls also got a small yankee candle and a mason jar of chocolate. Let me know what you think!
  • Wow! You and your friend are very talented!

  • I love your bridesmaid gifts! For my wedding I am planning to have a little Doctor Who, Lord of the Rings, GoT and Harry Potter. Trying to avoid the kids birthday party look also! I'm not much of a decorator and I don't want to spend much on flowers because they aren't important to me, but I don't know how to pull this off without professional help. haha. I will figure something out though :)

Thanks bunches. I wanted to give my girls something that they could definitely use.

I love all of those things!! And I know what you mean. I have come to realization that I need a ton of help when it comes to planning a wedding, themed or not. We are trying to do as much DIY as possible and luckily my sister has been planning her own wedding for the past 5 years (even though she's not engaged she believes in being prepared lol) so she's a huge help. But it's still more work than I thought it would be.
  • I'm thinking about walking down the aisle to "Concerning Hobbits", "Many Meetings", or "The Ring Goes South" from the Fellowship soundtrack. We are doing a fantasy/moon and stars wedding =). Can't wait to see more pics!
