New Years Eve Plans

we are thinking of cooking steak and having a few glasses of wine and watch movies.
This was going to be our plan but just yesterday, some friends invited us to go with them to a prix fixe dinner/party thing in Princeton.  I would love to go and have fun but I really, really don't want to drive home or even be on the road in a cab.  We are debating whether to bother going out or just make some fancy food and stay in.
This is a dumb question, because I don't know Jersey very well. Is there a train that runs to Princeton?
It would be doable but would require taking the PATH to Newark to get on a train to Princeton - about 1-1.5 hours of travel-time. Not a huge deal - except the last train out of Princeton is at like 10PM and service won't resume until 5 in the morning.
    Oh, that sucks.

My boss actually commutes (drives) from Princeton every day. That's a lot of time to spend in the car. I don't know how he does it.
  • NJTransit is awesome in some aspects, but the fact that they pretty much shut down around midnight makes it really hard to use it in the evening. I loved taking the train when I was commuting into NYC during the day, but hate taking the train if I want to go hang out in the city at night. No way do I want to sleep at Penn until 5am if I miss the 11:39 train!

That's like the same nonsense for me taking the train into the city on the weekend. And even then it's not a straight shot. I have to cab it over the bridge from Tarrytown.
  • No plans! We just got back from DH's folks' place late Saturday night. So hadn't really thought about it yet. Some friends put the feelers out for some event a month or two ago, but we didn't commit. Usually we are out and about but it actually feels kind of good to think we might be home. That may change in the next few days. :)

It's not a straight shot for me ever. I have to change trains at least once during the day, usually twice at night/on weekends. One time, I got stuck waiting on the platform in Newark for a half hour for the connecting train. Alone. At night. It was no bueno!

    Ahh! That's the worst!
  • Probably nothing.  We have no plans yet.  I found a swing dance party, with an hour of dance lessons too that looked pretty awesome, but DH will get to nervous if he tries to learn to dance in front of people.  We might head downtown if it's not too cold and watch the fireworks.

  • Haven't decided about New Year's Eve yet but probably skiing on New Year's day.

Friday my friends and I drive to Montreal for my bachelorette!  I dug my aggressive sequins dress out of the closet and am getting REALLY excited!

The photo quality is not great but you get the idea...
  • I don't knowwwww. :( H wanted to hang out with his BM and his wife, who are in town from Florida. But they got tickets to the hockey game, so H thought we'd just "meet up with them after." Well it's not so easy to just "meet up" at 10:30 in downtown Detroit - places will either be packed or require advance tickets. H doesn't drink, so he doesn't want to just hang out at a bar all night. I can't find anything else interesting to do, so he said we should just stay home. But I want to wear something sparkly! But then I also don't want to spend too much time on the road with all the drunks either... blah.

We've hosted NYE parties the last two years but are just partied-out this year. Of course my friends are pissed now that they need to find something else to do, but dammit we had Super Bowl, Labor Day BBQ, the wedding, Halloween and Brunchgiving. SOMEBODY ELSE CAN PONY UP WITH A DAMN PARTY, I'M BROKE. :(

Sorry to post and run, had to wrap some things up at work (but I'm done now!  Yay!)

Yeah, train is not really feasible.  I looked it up and the hotel near the restaurant is only $99 so I thought that was a better option.  Then Fi checked his budget and he's over his discretionary spending this month and decided he'd rather not spend the money to go out NYE, which is totally fine with me (it was his friends' get together).

So we are staying home.  I'll probably get dressed up anyway.  I got a rack of lamb from Trader Joe's the other day and we will nom on that and drink champagne at home.

Pretty!  I would go with the darker shoes.

I like the darker ones, and love that dress! Super pretty!

I think DH and I are just staying in.   We didn't arrange for a sitter and we can't do much "adulty" when we have a 4 mo who needs the boobs.   (note - I'm fine with adult events but given that I'm still nursing, if I go too long without him, I'll need to hook myself up to a pump which just adds a layer of awkwardness).

I may have to work Wed morning anyway so I think we may just plan a nice dinner and then a chill time on the couch.   I may nod off and hopefully DH wakes me so we can smooch in the New Year.

The better time is hopefully the next morning when we go to brunch at a friend's place.
Honestly, as much as I love the anticipation and celebrating at midnight, it's the next-day brunch with friends that I've always loved best. It's a great way to start off the New Year. :)

    Darker ones

That dress is KILLER. Love the back (or lack thereof). Another vote for the darker shoes.

  • We'll be staying home, making pizza, drinking cocktails and faux-wine (but will enjoy a nice glass of real bubbles at midnight...if I make it that long!).

    Super, duper low key.

  • I work until 3, H until 9:30.  My family used to have this tradition where we would make snacks and drinks and watch movies NYE and NY Day, so I've decided that after he gets off work we will veg and watch movies.
    Here's the menu:
    Sub
    Pizza
    Chicken wing dip
    Chips and dip
    Shrimp cocktail
    Homemade eggrolls
    Soda
    Milkshakes
    Strawberry Kiwi mojitos

and whatever else we desire until the tummy ache kicks in :)

God, I want all of these dresses. Where is this one from @decembergrl2014? Also, I would go with the grey shoes on the right.
  • @ashley8918‌ - I got the dress (or should I say H bought me the dress) at Express.

Thank you ladies for the compliments and opinions. I'm leaning towards the darker shoes also.

You TK ladies are so terrible for my finances.

  • Working a 10 hour day NYE, then back at 8am NYD.  I'm really with @Maggie0829, though, in that I loathe New Years.  I don't get the hype. It happens every year, yet most people behave as if it's never happened before and will never happen again.  Even NYE 1999, which was marginally more interesting, wasn't a big deal for me. I think it's fine that most people seem to love it, but it just doesn't do it for me.
  • I just bought this dress tonight.
  • I asked DH if he wanted to start the new year with a bang *wink wink*. It took him a minute to get what I meant. D'oh!

  • We'll probably be going to a friends' place for NYE, but apparently it is up to me in case I want to cancel since I do not know these particular friends (we were going to go to one set of friends' place, but plans changed and now we're all going to this other people's house, but I do not know them) since I am shy.
