For serving almost entirely catered food for New Year's Day family dinner? It's the first time Fi's big, Italian family is coming to our new place. And normally I love to cook and they love my food. But this year I'm just so... Tired. And our grocery store can do a large carving ham, three starches, three vegetables, and two desserts for $165. That's around $15pp. I think I will make some hummus, artichoke dip, and cookies and call it a day. Am I being a boring host (honestly asking)?

    Nope. None at all.

    Although I might switch out one of the starches for another veggie or protein. You can always heat up your own rolls.

    Not at all, that sounds awesome! Just because you host something doesn't mean you have to cook it :) FWIW my mom gets Christmas dinner catered every year (no one wants to cook in our extended family) and it's always delicious/no one bats an eye.

    Is this the JC Shoprite? Their stuff is not bad. Any possibity of getting an order from one of the many awesome Italian places around here? Or even just upgrade from hummus and dip to a great antipasto platter to make it feel more special?

    Like maybe order a great deli tray, grocery store dinner, and a flour less chocolate cake from Chocopain?

    No, it's from FreshDirect. I've had some of their catered stuff before and found it really good. Antipasto platter is a good idea-- the dip is FSIL's favorite so we're definitely doing that but we can add something else.

    If I could figure out how to cater my everyday life I would. Especially if there are cookies. And booze.

    We might host thanksgiving next year and wifey has already said she wants to have it catered. I don't cook so it's that or we all have PB&J sandwiches.

    I just finished cooking, cleaning and hosting for three different Christmas dinners and I am worn the fuck out. Caterers are our friends. Go for it!

    FreshDirect has a lot of really great single serving meals.  Seriously the best fridge or freezer meals I've tried and still cheaper than getting a crappy sandwich in Times Square on my lunch break.  I love to cook but it's nice to save it for when I can do it for fun instead of feeling stressed about cooking all the time!

    So I found THESE and I think they will make a good addition to fancy up appetizers.  They look super easy to put together and just a step up from doing hummus.  Yum.

    I'm having our NYE party catered as well. I cooked for Christmas, and I'm just done. I'm not even making any appetizers. I'm putting out cheese. Yummy, yummy cheese.

    No judgypants as long as the food is good. And if you're making some stuff to supplement (apps and cookies and whatever), then you're going further than I would ;) Agree with PP about putting the food out on your own platters, though. It won't fool anyone, but it looks nicer and like you put in more effort.
