Would you judge me...

Re: Would you judge me...

  • No judgement here! I definitely like the idea of adding in an antipasto platter or something else in addition to your other apps though! Also, definitely try to move some things into your own serverware if you can...but honestly I've been to PLENTY of parties where they had large aluminum trays that were kept heated over some burners and it didn't detract from anything.

  • Geez, @JCBride2015, I was expecting something WAY juicier!

Nah, I wouldn't judge. I love food so much--catered food, home-cooked food, raw food, free sample food, food I find on the sidewalk (kidding). As long as it tastes good, nobody should be judging. (I've always found it's harder to judge with my mouth full anyway).

  • As long as the caterer is good, you do a few fresh items and you put some things in your own serving dishes - I'm not judging at all! And it sounds like this is exactly your plan - so relax and do it!
  • Is this the JC Shoprite? Their stuff is not bad. Any possibity of getting an order from one of the many awesome Italian places around here? Or even just upgrade from hummus and dip to a great antipasto platter to make it feel more special? Like maybe order a great deli tray, grocery store dinner, and a flour less chocolate cake from Chocopain?
No, it's from FreshDirect. I've had some of their catered stuff before and found it really good. Antipasto platter is a good idea-- the dip is FSIL's favorite so we're definitely doing that but we can add something else.
That JC Shoprite is absolutely horrid (for regular groceries, anyway. Maybe the catered stuff is better). I always had to brace myself for the experience, and usually left the store feeling slightly dirty. The JC A&P is a lot better, but FreshDirect is amazing.

Also - no judgment at all about catering dinner. Preparing a large meal for a crowd can be tough and if I worked crazy lawyer hours, I wouldn't want to spend my day off cooking either.

JC Shoprite is hell on earth. A&P is better but so expensive. Fresh Direct is the bomb.

I wanted to die last night though when we put in our order and they were out of the combo package! Gah. But we figured it out.

  • So what time should I be there for dinner? I'll bring wine.

  • Nope, no judgement at all!

  • As long as you don't pass it off as your own cooking you're all good in my books.

  • I'd judge you in a "Why did I fucking cook all that food and wear myself out when I could've just ordered like she did?" kind of way.

  • As long as I'm properly hosted (ie have a place to put my ass) and there's enough for everyone you're good in my book.

I'd probably high five you for being smart and not stressing yourself out.  Something I need to learn to do.

  • We're ordering food for our NYE party.

If people want to show up and judge me for that, they don't have to eat the food.
  • We did Boston Market for Christmas dinner this year. Turkey dinner for 12. It was reasonable and tasty. Work and life has been so crazy lately I hated the thought of cooking and then cleaning again.

You would be my sister's favorite person. She loves Boston Market with a burning passion. Yum!

I cried when the Boston Market down the street from me closed. Now the closest ones are 20+ minutes away. :(

It's funny, in JC, the Shoprite is atrocious and the A&P is nice, but in Hoboken, it's the opposite. The A&P is gross (though I heard they redid it - wouldn't know, haven't been), and the Shoprite is BEAUTIFUL. But the remodel after Sandy probably had something to do with that.

Moral of the story: I clearly spend too much time at Hudson County grocery stores.

Glad you were able to figure something out!

  • Clearly I will have to come over and taste-test all this food, just to make sure it's good enough to serve. ;)

  • Now that I'm in the throes of cooking madness, I'm really jealous that you can get away with having your party catered. I've been in the kitchen for almost 4 hours and only have half the menu cooked/prepped. I'm tempted to say fuck it and just get a deli tray... but my friends would never speak to me again if I didn't have my deep-fried mashed potatoes or all the casseroles!
