How about some menu help?

Hey all. H and I are having some friends over tomorrow for the wild card football games and I am in charge of cooking. I am going to be making a three bean chili with a side of cast iron creamed corn bread.

I am stuck here though. What other sides (besides the usual cheese/sour cream topping) should I make? What are your go-to finger foods for football games?

  • My favorite chili side is fritos. FRITOS AND CHEESE.

    Other favorite snacks:
    - Chips and queso
    - Little smokies
    - Pickle wraps
    - Any kind of dip (HOLLER!)

  • I'm a huge fan of those little pigs in a blanket you get at Costco. I call them weenie tots because of Married with Children. Add some mustard... instant yum.

  • My favorite snacks to make for a crowd are generally dip and cheese-based, because cheese.

    Spinach and artichoke dip
    Homemade hummus
    Baked brie
Guacamole (add cotija cheese and bacon, yum)

I sometimes make these little pizza type rolls with crescent roll dough, like this recipe although I haven't tried the garlic butter on it!

  • I like all of the above ideas. We're also big into homemade potato skins (I like using little potatoes so they're bite sized-ish). And, while not really traditional, bacon-wrapped dates. Because there are not enough opportunities for them.

  • I'd probably add some corn chips, chopped onion, several kinds of salsa, guacamole and then if some wanted chili nachos instead of a bowl of chili or just chips and salsa you're covered.

Other than that, I don't really do "sides" with chili cause it's pretty hearty and filling as is.  I'd probably make a pan of brownies for dessert though.  If you wanted to do a salad on the side for those that might want something a tad lighter, you could do something like romaine, pepitas, cotija, roasted corn, and toss with a salsa vinaigrette.

Other football party apps if you wanted to go that route instead of sides:

    BBQ meatballs

Buffalo wings or buffalo chicken dip and chips (it's good with veggies, too - carrots, celery, cauliflower)

    Deviled eggs

    Pigs in a blanket

Hot pepper jelly over cream cheese with crackers

  • I make pesto crescent rolls (just spread pesto inside the crescent roll before you roll it up) and little zucchini pizzas (slice zucchini, add pizza sauce, pepperoni, and cheese, then bake until the cheese is bubbly and zucchini is soft).
  • I can't have people over to watch football without making buffalo chicken dip. I've also made a really good jalapeno popper dip. Basically, favorite bar foods made into dip form. Mmm

I've made these several times and they are always a big hit!  (I also love that website...I find all kids of yummy stuff that's usually easy to make)
