Domestic Weekend Trips

DH and I are trying to plan out the year and we have a few longer trips planned, but we're looking into short, weekend getaways. 

We've thought about Nashville, St Louis, Boston, Tucson.... Any advice on cool cities (or non-cities - we're open) that would be fun to visit over a long weekend?

    Atlanta (of course :) ), Charleston, Savannah, St. Augustine/Ponte Vedra, mountains of Vermont, coast of Maine, Asheville...All places you can enjoy for a weekend! :)

    There are some awesome mountain towns here in Colorado. One of my favorites is Frisco. It is reasonably priced (for a mountain town) and has a ton of fun things to do. There is a marina where they do sail boat races and then there are a ton of really cute shops on the main street. Plus lots of hiking around the town. I highly recommend it.

    I'm seconding Charleston, Savannah, St. Augustine, and Asheville! They are all great weekend getaway destinations!

    Also - the Florida Keys, Seattle, San Diego, Chicago, Boston, Washington D.C., and San Francisco.

    I think it depends where you live.

    For example, Cape May, NJ is a great little town (got married there), but it's a long haul from say the west coast for a weekend.  But it's a great if you live a few hour drive from there.






    What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

    Tuscon is amazing, my parents have a house there and my FI and I are going next month for a week.  Awesome restaurants, cool galleries, amazing hiking and scenery.

    Nashville is great (I got engaged there!)  Fun town, especially if you love music.

    NYC (obvs.) 

    Newport, RI was awesome.  We went right before tourist season really began so it was a bit cheaper but awesome B&B's, good food and the houses to explore there are incredible.

    Jackson Hole is gorgeous.

    depending on where you live..... put in bay ohio, (lake erie islands. places on the weekend usually require a 2 night stay so friday night stay and saturday stay.), Pittsburgh, Philadelphia,

    I highly recommend Nashville, obviously, but I also recommend Savannah, GA, Seaside, FL, Greenville, SC is also very charming :) These are just little southern towns easy to navigate for a long weekend.

    Yess!!  30A is beautiful in general.  We go to Santa Rosa Beach, and I have also stayed in Rosemary Beach.  It's all really nice.  I would recommend going just outside of peak season where it's warm but the kids are still in school (because it basically turns into mini suburban Atlanta during spring break and summer).  You have a sweet spot in May where weather is perfect, spring break is over, and kids haven't gotten out of school, yet.  Mid-late September is also beautiful, but there's more of a risk of hurricanes then.

    Chicago (obviously), Door County Wisconsin, Napa-area in CA.

    I just did a weekend in Philly and really enjoyed it! So much historical stuff to see! DC has a million things to do too, obviously. 

    When I think of a weekend away, I factor in how easy and cost-effective it is to get somewhere, so you can spend your money actually being somewhere.  I also enjoy doing a lot of stuff and really seeing a new place, while others may prefer to just relax.  Whatever floats your boat.

    I second Chicago! Especially in the summer, it's one of the best cities in the world
    Nashville is always fun
    Jackson, WY (Everybody calls is Jackson Hole, even people I know who live in the area. Jackson Hole is not a city; it's a geographic location-- the valley in the middle of all the mountains. And it is stunningly beautiful. Jackson is the name of the city. Just had to get that out lol. Teton Village is just down the road and is a cute little ski resort area with an AMAZING wine store)

    Sun Valley, ID is another fun town. It's a ski town but it's fun in the summer too. Lots of cute shops, good restaurants, fun bars, hiking, amazing views of the mountains, etc.

    Snowmass, CO (right next to Aspen) and Denver

    ETA! (Can't believe I forgot this one) Albuquerque, the first or second weekend in October has a hot air balloon festival. It's AMAZING!  Thousands and thousands of them all go up at sunrise, so you get up stupid early and drink all day, and you can go for a ride in one, during which they give you champagne.

    I don't remember where you live but there are great spots up East. Boston, Newport, Berkshire Mountains, we just went to a B&B in Maine for Christmas which was amazing. 

    I think Tuscon is a little boring but I love northern AZ like Flagstaff and Sedona. Such cute, artsy little towns. Similar to Tuscon but I guess I like it better because of the trees and wildlife, it's not desert-y. 

    Sioux Falls, South Dakota is a random little city that I went on a business trip once. It was actually really pretty.

    Come to Philly! I love my hometown, but you really only need a weekend. See some history, enjoy a cheesesteak and then you've pretty much done all the important stuff.

    Personally, I loved Hershey. It's pretty quiet, but it's really fun. We go out there for various shows and concerts (from Phila), and Chocolate World is neat! That's a great weekend spot for those of us who are closer.

    ETA: 100% agree with @lolo883 - I'll do the same!

    We had a great time on our road trip through Wyoming and South Dakota.  There's a surprising amount of touristy things to do there.  Go visit Wall Drug.  Total kitschy little down with it's huge drug store.

    Michigan's Upper Peninsula (specifically Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Marquette, Houghton, and Copper Harbor)

    If you love roller coasters, you absolutely, hands-down, MUST visit Cedar Point in Sandusky, Ohio.

    If you like history: Washington, DC; Williamsburg, VA (or if you don't care as much about history, just go to Busch Gardens!); Charlottesville, VA

    If you like food/art/culture: Asheville, NC; New Orleans, LA (we haven't actually been yet, but planning for this year)

    If you like the beach: Nags Head, Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, or Manteo, NC; San Juan or Carolina, PR if you're willing to fly since it's domestic

    Are y'all athletic/outdoorsy?  You could plan to do short sections of the AT. 

    One place I haven't been, but would love to go myself is Traverse City, MI.  @lolo883 @larrygaga @wrigleyville might know more about it! I know people who live there and travel there, and they say GREAT things about it!

    Also, you better come back and tell us where you decide to go!! :)

    I grew up near there and worked at the park/Chocolate World for years. It's a good amusement park that has a huge variety of rides for everyone. Lots of rides for little kids and then a lot of roller coasters.

    If you go to Hershey, you have to go to the Spa at the Hotel Hershey. The chocolate scrub is amazing, I like going in the colder months because the lounge has a fire place and there's nothing like sitting in a plush robe at the fire with cups of hot cocoa and gorging on all the treats they have out.

    I ADORE Traverse City. It's crazy busy in the summer with all the beach/watersports people. Most things close up for the winter, but September is perfect.

    The beach is pretty and the mall is cool, that's all I really know. 

    I suggest Bay City, as well! Or Marquette.
