Yeah, we currently live in Manhattan. My walk to the subway is only a couple blocks so I can get away with less wintery winter boots. But now that we are moving to the burbs, it is a longer walk to the train and I think they are less prompt about snow/ice clearance.

H an I both actually decided this week (after a few trips to the new house) that new boots were in order.
H and I moved from an apartment in town to a house out in the country last March. One evening of shoveling snow in our driveway in Uggs (oh how I miss having a plow company come and NOT paying for it) solidified the decision that I needed serious winter boots. So, so worth it.

Yeah, Uggs are not winter boots. Those are for chilly, dry days.

Pretty much. They were great when I didn't have a driveway to shovel or a dog to walk, and was only pretty much going between the car and whatever building I was going in to. H has actually refused to buy me any more Uggs and happily bought me my Sorels for my birthday. He got himself the ugliest pair of winter boots for this year but man do they keep him warm and dry.

My H DESPISES Uggs. Like, irrationally. They are super comfy, but they just don't do it when there is any amount of moisture.

  • I have Ugg Adriondack II's (since they're actually real winter boots, and super warm), Short Ugg Baily Buttons (I hate these, but wear them when I have nothing to actually do, and just want to wear slippers to town, and Sorel Alpha Pac's (which are super ugly, but the most functional winter boots ever).

I live in Edmonton, AB, so it's pretty cold here.  Unless I'm actually spending time outside I wear a hiker style shoe, or a nice pair of leather boots.
  • STAHP IT!!!  I can't take these threads anymore!!  I want to buy a pair, aaaaaaaaaah!

I did just have a birfday and once you are over 30 you totally get to celebrate for the entire month and buy yourself birfday gifts, right?

Just have to add: I came in from lunch a few minutes ago. The other people walking in were going really slow and taking tiny steps because our parking lot is a skating rink right now. So much ice and snow. I was booking it like a pro speed walker to get out of the cold ASAP cuz I have my Sorels on and those suckers won't slip for ANYTHING. Safe to say I did not bust my ass on the pavement.

Precisely why I want them. I was out the other day in my Hunters (which I do LOVE) but they are not winter boots. They don't work with the ice.

  • I do the same thing in my sorels! I used to wear them into the office before I worked from home and then change into my heels/flats I wanted to wear inside.. even had to help a girl out to her car in HEELS after it snowed one day about 6" but I was prepared!

Psh I don't change them when I get to work. I wear these warm comfy suckers all day long. I guess that's the benefit of working in clinical research where all my coworkers are mega nerds and care far more about data than they do about looking cute :P lol It's an interesting place.

However, when I walk around the building I get tons of compliments on how "cute" my boots are. I don't think of them as cute. I think of them as badass mega snow survival boots. But whatev.

Love this! Totally agree they are mega snow survival boots, that and my carhartt jacket! I work in the tech world but in sales.. I have the not so cute old school caribou that I will switch out otherwise it looks a little "off" with business attire (have to tuck in the slacks to keep them dry).. but when I wear my crazy cable knit those suckers are on all day long!

  • Now I need All The Opinions.

Can I buy both pairs? They seem to serve different purposes. Plus, cute.

  • They are both cute but think of the amount of snow you will be walking through.. we got a foot over this last weekend so the low ones wouldn't work for that but if you get both then you get the best of both worlds!!! Personally I like mine tall enough to tuck in whatever I'm wearing when i'm walking through the snow/water so that my pants are dry when I get where I'm going.

  • I'd go for the taller ones... just because I don't know that there's any situation that the shorter boots would serve that the taller ones wouldn't.

I think you should just get the taller ones. I mean if you can afford both then go for it! More boots are always good. But to me the really short ones wouldn't be useful because you can't wear those in the snow. (Unless the snow is like an inch high). If you live in an area that gets super cold but doesn't get snow, then the really short ones would be fine.

  • GOD DAMN IT I wish I were in the market.

I have a pair of duck boots (think LL Bean, only they're some French brand they had at a random shoe store in Brooklyn instead) that do me just fine since it hardly ever REALLY snows here.

You do not need more shoes, Katie. You cannot have more shoes, Katie. STOP OBSESSING ABOUT SHOES, KATIE.

I'd go tall. Those aren't even THAT tall, either, so I don't think you'll end up annoyed that they're all the way up to your knee or anything.

Definitely go with the second ones. Higher is better and I think they're cuter while still being super functional.

ETA - I'm also biased because the second ones are the same colors as my Joan of Arctic boots.

We don't get THAT much snow. Lots of small storms (an inch or so) and a handful of 1 foot storms. Maybe once a year we get more than that.

Anything is enough to justify new boots in my opinion! You don't want to slip and fall right? Yep, totally see a need, your safety is important!

I know you weren't asking me, but I do. I have around a hundred pairs of shoes so he's supposed to rein me in and only let me buy shoes if I legitimately need them (as in, not another pair of stilettos with zombie print or more animal-print booties.)

Haha no, more joking than anything. But we are on a much stricter budget with the new year so I don't think bringing home new expensive boots when he just bought me a pair two months ago fits into the budget
