Workout videos?

I really want to start trying to exercise more often and get back into shape. I have gained weight in the past few months and while I'm okay with my weight, I know that I want to be in better shape and just feel better about myself.

My work in 70 miles from my house and I usually leave home around 7 and get back at 6. I only have a 30 minute to an hour munch break. I live in a very rural area where there aren't any gyms within 20 miles of my house.

I think that using workout videos and working out at home is my best bet to actually accomplishing something. H has already said he would help encourage me to stay on task and buy the workout videos I want.

Any recommendations? I had thought about a mix of yoga, pilates, cardio, dancing etc.

Re: Workout videos?

  • Check out Fitness Blender on You Tube! They've got a ton of variety, and various lengths depending on how much time you're working with. Many don't require any equipment either which is nice.

If you have the budget to possibly get a gym membership, go look at elliptical or bikes online. I recently bought one with money I had set aside for a gym pass. Of course it was more expensive, but now I don't have to drive to the gym and back in -20 degrees. But there are a lot of equipment that really isn't that expensive and probably cost just a little more than a year long gym pass.

POPSUGAR has awesome barre workouts you can use a chair. They aren't really hard but I danced for many years. But it's supposed to be for beginners.

I usually hate workout videos because I sit there all pissed that it's so easy for this thin blonde girl with fake boobs who lives in LA to do this workout. I just like seethe the entire time.

    EDIT: POPSUGAR is on youtube

  • I'm a huge advocate of Jillian Michaels' 30 Day Shred. Actually, I'm a huge advocate of all her videos. I own several & they just work for me.

I also like some of the Biggest Loser workout videos. Watching people who have various body types, some similar to mine, pushing through a workout keeps me from giving up :) I'm all, "IF THEY CAN DO IT I CAN DO IT!"

  • I have a couple of Jillian Michaels workout videos I really like. The 30 Day Fix one and the Cardio Kickboxing FastFix. They're only 20 minutes, but they are both really hard.

But I do suggest trying a few on youtube if you're unsure. A lot of videos are available on youtube to try and then you can buy if you want to.

  • I did P90X for a while, and it really worked well. Most days are 45-60 minutes (except yoga which is 90).
  • Another vote for Jillian Michaels. The Yoga Meltdown video helped me lose 30 pounds leading up to my wedding.

  • I like the P90x3 workouts as well as the 21 Day Fix workouts. They are all 30 minutes and every day is different and they have the modifiers on screen simplifying everything if you're a beginner.

  • Erin Huggins has a bunch of free pilates videos on youtube that I really like.

  • Thanks ladies!

For those of you who suggested P90X or Jillian Michaels, which specific DVDs did you use.

I would love to use the free ones on YouTube but I don't have internet at my house.

  • Check your On Demand from your cable provider - there's usually several free ones you can try to see what you like before you buy something.

I bought Brazilian butt lift a few years ago and I am too out of shape for it. I did the video showing you how to do the moves and that made me sore.

  • FI's sister is obsessed with Blogilates, and I think it might even be free.

I've done P90X in the past and I think it's pretty good and sufficiently challenging. I did 30 Day Shred but I don't know if it's...hard enough? Like, I think you should feel pretty wiped after a workout and I never really did with that.

  • Come and join us over on the Getting In Shape board too!

I use a wide variety of videos, including my gym membership.  I prefer to workout at home, but I am training for a 5K so I need to treadmill in this cold weather.  I love the 21 Day Fix and I have a lot of Jillian Michaels DVDs as well.

All of them work for me, but when I start a program, I follow through with it.

I would definitely look into your On Demand from your cable provider.  And if you have an Xbox One, they also have workouts on there as well.

I got on PirateBay and downloaded the whole P90X system (sorrynotsorry). It comes with a schedule of the order to do the DVDs depending on what you're trying to achieve (weight loss, muscle gain, etc.).
  • @kat1114 that's what H did too - downloaded all of the P90x vidoes. He pretty much has them memorized by now since he's been doing them for 2 years.

H also downloaded the 10 minute trainer vidoes and schedule from Beach Body. The schedule tells you which videos to do which days. I really need to get back into that again. 30 minutes and you're done.

  • Look it's totally old school, and super cheesy, I'm aware these facts. But I love Sweating to the Oldies. It might not give me ripped abs, but I have fun doing it and can get my heart rate up.

  • I don't usually do workout videos so I can't help there, but I just bought a "stationary trainer" for my road bike. It's one of those stands you put in your house and set your bike into (any kind of bike, really, although some are recommended more than others) so then it becomes a stationary bike you can ride inside your house.

The weather here is way too nasty to do anything outdoors and I've had many gym memberships before and never ended up actually going. I like to workout in my house but we don't have much space. The trainer I bought was $50 on Amazon with tons of good reviews, plus it doesn't take up much space. I thought this would be a good way for me to be more active, get some cardio in, and stay healthy. Maybe it's something you could try without having to spend a ton? :)

I also totally sing along to all the songs.
  • I love insanity. Its 30 minutes and you dont need equipment

  • I've just started doing yoga again, but I've heard a lot of great things about PiYo (yoga/Pilates mix).  You can get some videos on youtube or purchase them.  My muscles are still sore from yoga class on Saturday, so I think I may need to work up to the PiYo, but I've heard enough good things about it that I definitely want to check it out.

H keeps wanting me to do Insanity with him. I have no excuse not to except just watching him do it makes me tired. I'd die about 5 minutes in to the workout.

I have done the Yoga Meltdown, 30 day abs, and the kickboxing videos. The kickboxing is by far the most difficult.

  • I used the Jillian Michaels 30-day Shred video.  My favorites right now are the Tone It Up series, sometimes they have week-long workout schedules with all the videos you need, and they have a huge community and recipes as well.  The workouts aren't long, but they definitely left me sore.  They're also on YouTube, but they have videos on their site and on their app as well.

  • Thank you everyone for the information!

I ended up going to Wal Mart during my lunch break to buy the Jillian Michaels Kickboxing and Yoga Inferno DVDs.

i was very interest in the PiYo as well so I may order that. I am determined to start tonight (while I have the motivation) and I couldn't find those in store.

  • Since it's too cold for me to go running, I just bought the Slim in 6 dvds. I just need to get up early to do them.
  • I also have Jillian Michael's 30-Day Shred, and I really like it so far.  I've never tried any other DVDs, but I got hers because I'd heard good things about it.

I second this! The 30 Day Shred has three levels (all of which are very challenging), and they only take 25 minutes including warm-up and cool-down. A lot of squats, lunges, and core work, and all you need is hand weights (and water. Make sure you have water).  It definitely feels like a tough workout, but it's good if you don't have a lot of time or a very good attention span (like me).

The other Biggest Loser workouts are good also.

  • I did the Yoga Inferno workout last night and I was dying...I didn't realize how out of shape I had gotten. H was cracking up at me because I was literally shaking.
