Are sari's required to perform a Hindu ceremony?

My fiance is hindu and I am not. We are looking to do a hybrid ceremony that combines a bit of both of our traditions, including me wearing a white dress. He spoke to a Hindu priest the other day who told him he would not perform the ceremony unless I was wearing a sari. Are all hindu priests this way? Is there someone who would perform a ceremony with me wearing a wedding dress? Any input is much appreciated. Thanks!

  • You might want to post this on the cultural wedding  boards

  • I don't think there is a Hindu board anymore. I hope you get some answers, OP.

  • There is a South Asian board. They can probably help you out there. Would you consider wearing a white sari? Or a white lehenga (it's a long usually a-line skirt with a blouse and a shawl to cover your head, or to just drape). I know in South India a lot of Christian brides do that. What about changing into your dress for the reception after the ceremony? You could try looking around for a priest who isn't as picky about the sari situation. Or you could try finding an officiant who knows enough to incorporate aspects of both cultures.

As an aside, you may not want to wear all white as a bride in a Hindu wedding, because traditionally in India that's the color of mourning. Widows wear white. It's not really a big deal, but if you're superstitious like me, it might matter.
  • My fiance is also Hindu, and I am not.  We originally tried to combine both cultures into one ceremony but decided it was just easier to have 2 ceremonies - this way everyone is happy.  My future mother-in-law told me I could wear whatever I chose to at the Hindu ceremony, my wedding dress or a sari, they just wanted me to be comfortable.  In the end, chose to wear a sari .  You might try to locate a more liberal priest.
