Wedding Bands....Again

Sorry to bring this subject up again, but FI are starting to look for our wedding bands so we can order them by the end of this month. FI never wears jewelry, so he's pretty clueless when it comes to trying to choose something. He will definitely need something durable, he works outside a lot, and on projects and such. How did your FI/H choose? and do you have a style/metal that you would recommend over the other? Thanks!

FI and I just started looking for his and he is soooo picky. He swears it will never be comfortable.

After trying on a million, he really likes this cobalt. He isn't into gold or bling and he went with how it felt on his hand.

ETA: FI races dirtbikes. He initially wanted to take a handlebar from a discarded bike and take it to a machinist to cut into a ring. I think it's an awesome idea, but he also wants something a bit nicer.

Yes, I forgot to add, the simpler the better. FI is not much for over the top stuff. @Maeday2, I've never heard of Cobalt, but it looks cool.

H has a gray brushed tungsten carbide ring. Tungsten is a very durable metal. He loves it.

H's biggest priority was not spending a lot of money, so we got a tungsten carbide ring from Overstock for $40. Looks like this one. Small flaw in the engraved line going around it but it doesn't bother him.

We just purchased FI's band a few weeks ago!

He originally was looking at some simple ones on Overstock and Amazon, but settled on a wood one from THIS guy on Etsy... colors are a bit different than what he ordered. But we got it recently and it is beautiful, and different which he liked.

Hoping it holds up (it's finished so that it should), but worst case scenario it was only $30

Now that he has it he doesn't want to wait to wear it! He wore it around the house the other day

H got a tungsten carbide ring from Amazon. He doesn't wear jewelry and didn't want anything expensive. Below is an example of what he bought - $20 and they're actually even cheaper now. It's durable and he likes the way it looks. They can't be sized but with the ring being so cheap, he can just order another one if he gains/loses weight and his current ring doesn't fit.

FI was super into the idea of a Gibeon meteorite band, so that's what we got. It's very, very plain except for the Widmanstatten lines (caused from the cooling of the metal in space) and he's happy with it. It was reasonably priced and he loves it, so it works for me.

Heh, H did this already. He has really big knuckles and skinny fingers so it was hard finding the right balance between too small for his knuckle and too big for his finger. He decided he was fine with his "real" ring being darn near permanently stuck on his finger, but got a decoy in a larger size to use during the ceremony, so I didn't have to struggle getting it onto his finger through pretty obvious pain. Didn't that would make a very good impression on our friends and family.

(Tungsten carbide can't be cut, but it can be broken if we really need to get it off his finger. He can get it off now, but it hurts his knuckle so he doesn't make a habit of it.)

The most important thing to my husband was that the ring could be fixed if something happened to it, followed by not costing an arm and a leg. He went with a comfort fit white gold band for those reasons. If it gets damaged it can be fixed, and it can be resized. He didn't like the idea that if something happened to his ring, he would have to get a brand new one. He wants to keep the one I put on him on our wedding day. He is sentimental like that.

Plus, the alternative metals bands were so thick he couldn't close his fingers together (he has small hands and very thin fingers). White gold bands were much thinner (from the finger to the outside of the band) than any tungsten or cobalt rings we could find.

H is an electrician with welding as a hobby, so we wanted something non-metal. He ended up choosing a ceramic ring with blue carbon fiber inlay. We bought it on Amazon for $20. He really likes it. It's pretty durable. It can shatter with a hard enough force, but the carbon fiber helps reinforce it. It is tougher to engrave and it has to be laser engraving. It can't be resized or anything, so it he outgrows it we would have to buy a different ring. But, it has saved him pain a few times at work. A couple weeks ago he came home saying that a wire that was supposed to be turned off, but wasn't, hit near his ring... he got a little shock, but if he had a metal ring he would have been seriously electrocuted.

Men's Wedding Band Comfort Fit Interior Black Zirconium Ring

On Etsy, but seems to a good company. Black zirconium finish, basically the sister to tungsten, FI is a mechanic and works at a warehouse, uses his hands a lot, so need something tough.

Titanium Alloy isn't good for him, I heard that if your hand gets swollen or some accident happens, they have to break your finger to get the ring off because it's not easy to just cut it off. We'd rather get tungsten over titanium for that reason, and keep it relatively cheap. He broke the first tungsten smacking his hand against a caliber during a brake job.

We went with white gold (18k I believe). He didn't want anything over the top with diamonds or anything, and he wanted it to not be too heavy. If I remeber correctly, the darker metals (tungsten? Idk) were noticeably heavier. We also both like the classic look of white gold/platinum.

I spent a little under $2k. I just need to decide what to have engraved! I don't know if it's visible in the pic, but it has these cool dimensions - it's widest in the middle of the ring. My Fi is Italian and has olive skin and it looks soooo good on him. He wants to wear it now and will ask from time to time but he has to wait

Kind of a thread jack, but did anybody else's FI think that his band should match yours? Did you end up with matching rings?

We went looking for rings for the first time on Sunday and he wanted to look for things that matched my e-ring in style. Not because he preferred it, but because he thought we should match. I'm currently trying to convince him that he should at least look at what he'd prefer, because our tastes are so different. My ring is totally me and I love it, but it's not really what my FI would wear at all. And I think he'd like something darker/cooler looking and less fancy. I don't think we need to match, especially since I know it's not what he'd prefer to wear for himself. So advice needed!

My husband is a mechanic so his hands get nasty daily and he knew he wouldn't be wearing it at work. So he wanted cheap. We also went with the tungsten but I wish we had gotten it online like some of the people here. We paid about $120 at the jeweler's. Boo.

To question above me, no- ours don't match. I wanted white gold and he didn't. It would have been way too expensive for something he can hardly ever wear.

Nope. My ring is rose gold and FI would never wear any form of gold.

I like that his ring will be black though. I think that still "matches," not that it matters.

ETA: My ring reflects my style, so I think FI's should too. That's why I encouraged the motorcycle handlebar machinist creation. Totally him.

Because DH has remove all metal from his person on a regular basis (he works with high current electricity and is a sports official part-time), we had to choose something inexpensive because his risk of losing the ring is very high. His weight fluctuates quite a bit, so we didn't want something that would have to be cut off him if his fingers swelled. We looked at a few different rings, and settled on sterling silver. He has an 8mm comfort fit in size 13.5 (that the jeweler had to stretch) - ran us under $200. Mine is a 2mm sterling silver in a 5 and cost a whopping $18.

We went to the jewelry store. He found a white gold band in a width that he liked. I ordered it from said jewelry store. The end.
And "back in the day" having matching bands was a way to figure out who was married to whom (I think anyways- old school detectives in tv shows would use that to be like "they aren't married to one another") but I think with so many options now, that's less likely to be a thing.

Here is H's ring. His is white gold.

We both liked the tungsten and cobalt rings too, but he said that he wanted something size able. We also really liked the stainless steel ones, but they weren't sizeable either.

I got this ring in tungsten with the blue carbon fiber for FI's mangagement ring! He wants the same ring in black for his wedding band, and I have a blue diamond engagement ring, so I thought it fit.

For the PP, my e-ring is diamonds and milgrain, and we're thinking of getting the matching band, and FI would never wear anything like that, so no!

I personally would like us to have a matching set though, so I may order the "free" bands from JVL.

H's band is white gold with a milgrain edge, but he's a professor, so nothing hard on his hands. I did want to mention what his best friend got, though, because he works on cars. After having issues with a custom-made silver band nearly getting melted on his hand, he switched to a silicone one from saferingz.com, which makes them in all kinds of colors. His is a metallic silver so from a distance it still looks like a metal band.

H has a tungsten ring. We got it for $99 at a jeweler just down the road from our house. The jeweler that made my rings didn't carry tungsten so we looked elsewhere. He works at a job where it could be dangerous to wear a wedding ring, so we got him a silicone ring from a company called Qalo. I have one too for when we go camping or kayaking, they're quite comfortable and are around $20.

I wanted our rings to look nice together, but I didn't worry about them matching. I do love his wedding ring, and they look good together. He wasn't really looking forward to wearing a ring at first, so I was thrilled he found something he liked so much.

He wears the tungsten band during the weekend (his job is 3 days one week, and 4 the following week) and his Qalo ring during the days he works.

Thank you for all of the replies. The local jeweler that made my ring is able to order just about anything, so it's on the to do list for this week to stop by and see what he can do. It looks like a lot of you went with the tungsten, I will mention this to FI because it seems like this might be the best thing for him. The only thing I don't like about those is that they can't be resized, but if it's going to end up being the most durable, I think that would be more important. Thanks ladies!

H also got a tungsten band. He was really iffy about wearing a ring at first (he's not a jewelry person, and he works with his hands every day) but he's had no issues and he likes wearing it. He ended up choosing a ring that was called smooth fit or something like that. The inside of the ring does feel really smooth and cool.

DH has $20 tungsten carbide ring from Amazon. It's a matte finish and he loves the durability. He's a weekend mechanic/overhaul-er and loves that it doesn't damage easily.

Ironically, I told a few girls at work who are engaged about the ring and they all ended up getting their FIs the same ring.

The site is down right now but you might want to take a look at www.brianbergerondesigns.com. My H raced motorcycles and in general loves all motor sports. We got him the ring that is designed to look like a motorcycle tire - he loves it. But Brian also designs rings to look like Dirtbike and Truck tires too. He was also really wonderful to work with. I ordered the original ring for FI (Wide Motorcycle Tire) but FI thought it felt too wide on his finger so I contacted Brian and he happily exchanged the original ring for the narrower band width and refunded me the difference in cost between the two styles.
