A stone fell out of my ring AGAIN

So I have a ring with those teeny tiny little microchip diamond thingys. I know they are delicate. I am very careful with it and take it off for lots of rough activities like when I'm working in my computer and car or cleaning or working out. FI wasn't told that they were delicate when he bought it, but the first time a chip fell out he was warned. Okay. I have to mail it to Chicago because it's not a chain jeweler so it's the only place that has the insurance for it. I sent them an email about how if this will keep happening they need to either pay for the shipping or cover the price of letting our local wedding band maker fix it.

FI bought it in dec. of 2013, and the first time a chip fell out it was march or april. Do I have the right to be really pissed or is this supposed to be expected of this type of setting? The chip is free to replace and I will make them pay for the shipping BOTH ways.

I hate not wearing it but since the little stones are all kind of connected they will fall out one by one if one is missing. WAH

  • Ugh that's the worst! I have no advice, only hugs and wine. I think you have every right to be pissed.

  • Aw bummer :(

Do you take it for check ups every six months? I have a micropave too, and I'm supposed to take it every six months to have all of the prongs checked and stuff.

I would be annoyed, too, but I think this sort of thing is fairly common with micropave rings. Then again, I've never had a stone fall out of mine and if I did, I'm sure I would be really upset, especially if I had to send it away!

I've heard of friends paying up to like $50 to have the stones replaced. If your jeweler is going to replace it for free, I'm not sure if there's much you can do other than change the setting or take it in for more check ups.

I hope you're able to get this all sorted out and that you don't lose any more stones!

  • Well I've only had it for 1 year and a few months into it I had to send it in. I don't mind taking it in but I have to mail it which makes me nervous. I just wish FI and I had waited until we were back in Michigan to get a ring. I love my ring though. I take it back.

I suppose if they paid for the 6 month check up to mail in I would be OKAY but not happy.

  • That sucks, I'm sorry! I hope it comes back home soon

OH I totally misread the timeline of your post! ACK! Yes, I would be SUPER upset if a stone fell out after only a few months of ownership.

    :(:(

I wouldn't be happy about having to mail it in, either. Is there a local jeweler that you trust where you can take it to check the prongs from now on?

    That really is sucky.

  • They won't cover the shipping. Fuckjng assholes. Maybe I'll return the ring and have it remade exactly how about that shit

  • I place a huge amount of value of objects and even though insurance would cover my ring 100% to replace in the event of loss or theft I know I'd still be inconsolable.

That being said, I'd totally return the ring and get a new one re-made at a local jeweler. This jewler clearly cannot create a reliable product nor do they seem to compensate for it with their customer service.
  • My wedding band has the teeny tiny "chip" diamonds. So does a necklace my sister gave me when I was 13. Neither have lost stones, and my band comes off my finger when 1) showering 2) working out  3) cooking or otherwise stuff around the kitchen.

You have every right to be pissed.
  • ":Unfortunately that happens. Under our warranty we will always fix this for you, however we do not cover the shipping. If you can get the ring to us, we would be more than happy to fix it for you. The only charge will be to ship it back to you. With insurance, the shipping will cost approximately $50. Please feel free to give me a call if you have any questions."

Unfortunatley, you have no fucking clue how to make a god damn ring and CLEARLY I need to take it to someone else to fix.

I have a guy who is making my wedding bands so I asked if it was okay if I took the ring to him and he didn't even fucking answer. My parents think I should just take it to the local guy anyway. The local guy is actually a friend of a friend that I know kind of well, so I honestly trust him more than some fucking asshole citidiot.

My nasty chipped nail looks classier. I will not do or say anything until FI gets home. I am drunk and this is not a good time for me to argue with someone. My ring is also dirty AF

  • Eeeee.

The style really doesn't look to me like it shouldn't be secure. My wedding hand is a similar style (in terms of diamond setting) and it seems very secure.
  • Im sorry this happened. I am in agreement with @JennyColada‌. Cut your losses with this jeweler, return the ring, and have it remade correctly using a local jeweler. It's not unusual for smaller stones to fall out of a setting, but it shouldn't happen multiple times. The jeweler should be more accommodating especially because they waited until the ring was damaged to tell your FI about potential issues. They don't sound trustworthy. I would take my business elsewhere and avoid the hassle and worry of shipping your ring out.
  • Shit, $50 in one way shipping?! It would be cheaper to drive there and back.

Right? That's just to insure it. I would actually drive it.

But what I'm really going to do is let the guy who is making my wedding rings, who is a friend of my sister, fix it. He does a great job and isn't an asshole, so I trust him more. He said it's not a big deal of a fix.

I need someone local to be my go-to, you know? Someone to clean it and check the prongs for me that isn't a 4 hour drive away.

Thanks for listening, I am calm now. I know I don't have to explain to you guys how upset this made me. I won't take it back because that's shitty and the store I got it from was supposed to be really amazing and this high end high class store. Can you imagine asking your fiance to take your ring back? WTF

They did a good job fixing it and making it, I really think it's just the setting it's in. I need to have it checked more than I am able to have it checked. I really did like this store, I'm more mad that we got it so far away. We move so often though it's hard to say what is local to us. It's a mess. It's not really the stores fault that I bought it not-local.

I am going to eat nachoes and have some more beer.

FWIW, I lost a small micropave stone in the first six months I got my e-ring. It was replaced and hasn't happened again for 25 years.

    Oh, and your ring isbeautiful!
  • I'm hoping if I take it to this local guy it will be better. I'm really thinking if I can get him to check the prongs a few times a year and get him to clean it everything will be peachy.

  • Good luck with the new guy! Sounds like a good plan.

  • Shit that sucks. $50 to ship?!

I have a micropave & I'll be furious if diamonds start to fall out. FI bought it at a local jeweler and a few months after we got engaged the old man who owned the place decided to retire, sell his entire inventory, and close the shop forever. So much for free sizing & cleaning for life!

I would be livid if my ring was falling apart after only a year, especially if it was supposed to be from a high end, reputable store. And doubly especially if they weren't willing to pay for the shipping since it's happened twice in a year.

Unrelated: you guys know so much about your rings. I only know the carat weight of mine (which is tiny) and that it has a nifty little heart "hidden" in the setting.

    Edited to finish a thought.

  • I don't know my carat weight or anything. Many of us don't. I can see visually with my eyes that it's a micropave, because it's tiny and micro.

Well I don't really know anything about jewelry, either. Like, my guess would be that pave means it's got bitty stones in it, like asphalt has bitty things in it. But I'd never seen the term before I came in here.

I really am sorry it's messing up though. Whatever it is, it ought to be made better than that.

You're adorable. :) That is literally what it means (paved in a way that a street would be paved with cobblestones), but it's pronounced pah-VAY.

I don't know anything about my ring except for the jeweler it came from.

I love this ring i dont want to get it remade. I am going to see how much it costs to get it repaired at my local jeweler. Mostly importantly, I will see what FI wants to do when he gets out of work. he has a cooler head than I do.

OMFG im so mad I will go to chicago and cut this fucker so does anyone in chicago want to meet for lunch tomorrow

    Holla atcha girl!

This is a bunch a fucking bullshit. I'd be furious! $50 to ship?! NO.

Oh yeah I know I'm a 7.5! I made sure to drop that knowledge bomb a few times. ;-)

Whenever I hear women talking about ring sizes I always laugh to myself because it sounds like men comparing their sizes LOL.

    I'm a 7.

PS, OP your ring is really beautiful!

  • That sucks.  I had my ring for 5 years never took it off.  I even worked on a sailboat.   No issues.     Then I move to the states and got a desk job.   I've lot 3 stones in 8 months.

The problem is my ring was custom done in the islands.   I have had them fixed by a jeweler in DE last year and they have been  holding up fine.

My wedding band has loose stones.  I took it in and they said it was a design flaw. So far none have fallen out, but my future goal is to take all the diamonds from both the e-ring and wedding band and made one big ring.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I'm itty bitty at 4.5. Your ring is so pretty! I'd be super pissed at having to have it fixed again after having it for so little time. They should be covering the shipping on that in my opinion.

Hopefully the local guy can fix it up!
