Vacation Destination

FI is being less than helpful so I thought I would turn to all of you lovely ladies!

He has 4 days of vacation that he has to use before the end of March (or beginning, apparently he's not even sure of that) I have given him options (yeah, we will take an extra day and make it a full week) and apparently he has no opinions so here goes.. You have a week of vacation to kill where do you go?

1. Alaska: His brother lives there and he's been wanting to visit, summers are a nightmare for us so we can't really plan a summer vacation up there
2. Our neighbors from where we lived last time moved to NC, we love them and want to see them.. I'm thinking fly into Orlando and then road trip it up there for a couple of days
3. Say f'it to visiting people and do an all inclusive where I lay on the beach for a week with a drink in my hand.
4. Test out the new camp trailer and road trip it to a pretty location (he lives in it 7 months out of the year so not sure he's 100% on board with that one)

Re: Vacation Destination

  • Adding option 5: Take the snowmobiles into the cabin

  • Option 1 (I've always wanted to go to Alaska!) or Option 5.
  • For some 4 years DH and I would spend our vacation time traveling to visit family and friends.  While it was nice when it was time to go on vacation this past year I was like no visiting with family or friends.  I want to lay on a beach with a drink in m hand, read a book and get a massage.

I ended up with sort-of that vacation.  We did go to an island where friends lived, but we stayed in a hotel and only met up with them a few times.   It was the like the best of both worlds for me.

Now I'm ready to visit family/friends again.    So I guess it depends on what did the rest of your travel plans look like in the last year or going to look like this year.  If you have other "sit on the beach plans" go visit family/friends.  If you have or had travel plans that saw family/friends I say go sit on a beach.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I guess my vote also depends on where you live. For a trip of 5 days, I'd want to minimize my travel time as much as possible. For that reason, I'd probably veto 2 & 4.
  • Alaska has always been on my list. But it's super dark up there right now, so you'd have to decide if the things you want to do match up with what you CAN do this time of year.

Second choice would be taking snow mobiles up to your cabin.

Third choice that is not on the list is going to New Orleans, Miami, Austin, the Keys, or San Diego - someplace warm with a lot to do. Just a vacation for the two of you.

  • Thanks everyone! For the more info you requested.. we live in northern Idaho so the "test out the camp trailer" would take a whole 3.5hrs to get to yellow stone or somewhere similar.. as for travel time, we will leave on a Saturday or Sunday and come back the following Saturday so it will be about 7 days total. We did 7 days in the Dominican and it was fine, I have no problem with maximizing travel with red eyes (we live in a shitty place to travel "quickly") I'll line out travel times below:

    1. Alaska: 5.5hrs flying
    2. NC: 6.5hrs flying
    3. All inclusive would depend where we go for flight time, I'd max it out around 9hrs
    4. Camp Trailer: 3-5hrs
5: Snowmobiles into the cabin: 8hrs depending on the roads

  • Why not mix 2 & 3 and do an all-inclusive or a nice resort on the east coast, then visit your old neighbor for a day?

I like this idea and I have been playing with that one too.. I'm thinking possibly fly into Orlando and do two days at Universal (HUGE HP fan over here, haven't been since they opened the other half of that attraction) and then slowly road trip up the coast to them?

That's really not close though. Depending where in NC they are you're looking at easily 10 hour drive. You'd also need a rental car and you'd be charged more for dropping it in another state. If you did something like the Caribbean you'd likely just take the resort shuttle and not need a car. So factor that in too.

I vote Alaska. I lived far away and it sucked when people didn't come visit me. I had like 3 friends come over the span of 3 years and even my parents didn't come. So I think it would be really exciting for your FI and his brother.

Thanks! Driving is not an issue for us AT ALL.. we wouldn't do it in one day but multiple times a year we do 13+hr drives in one day so we are used to it.. We used to visit his bro once/yr in Ohio and we haven't gone since they moved to AK so that may end up being the winner.. I'm just having a hard time with living in the snow right now and taking a vacation to the snow without my snowmobile! Side Note: All options are in the budget, went over that before even putting them on the list.

I totally feel you!! We're in the snow in MA and we are going to Iceland in March. DH is complaining that we won't be escaping to somewhere warm. I'm also a little bummed about that but at least we will be used to the cold so we shouldn't be cold while we're there haha

  • I vote hot beach, but I'm in the middle of cold dark winter (as you probably are too), so my answer is a little biased at the moment.

  • Alaska is beautiful in March. We have the Iditarod which starts March 7, 2015. It's a lot of fun to watch all of the mushers take off from downtown Anchorage. Also you have a decent chance of seeing the northern lights this time of year. I've lived in Alaska my whole life. The only downside is that this has been such a warm winter and we don't have much snow at all.
Enjoy your vacation no matter where you decide to go!
  • Unless you REALLY want to see the people you mentioned, I'd take a trip to somewhere warm and cheap. Mexico maybe.
  • Orlando to NC is a long drive.  Orlando to Atlanta is 7-8 hours, and from Atlanta, it's about 2 hours to the NC border, and about 3-4 hours to any city actually worth visiting.  Why not fly in to Atlanta?

  • 3, 4, or 5.  Sorry, not much help.

  • Orlando to NC. I am biased- my parents are in the keys right now (they go every year) and I am insanely jealous. I also love HP, it's a decent time of year to do Orlando (kids are mostly in school), and the East Coast is my favorite. Georgia and east Florida have a lot of lovely little islands. You'll drive through Savannah which is basically my favorite city to visit. I also enjoy road tripping it with my husband: our trip to alaska (which we took in the summer) was basically two weeks of driving around the state.

I will add as a native North Carolinian, Orlando to really anywhere in my state is also not a scenic drive. Depending on your destination, there are much better choices. I'd probably go with Charleston. Or, you know, just fly to Charlotte since it's a major hub city. Visit your friends and then roadtrip somewhere neat within the state since we have mountains, beaches, cities, wine trails, tons of options.

  • Orlando to NC is going to be about a 10-12 hour drive. That's a whole day of your trip wasted from just driving.

I personally would go to Alaska.

  • Thanks for all the great advice! Especially the people who have lived in/been to these locations. I had no idea the Iditarod started on March 7th, that may change the whole game plan! FI is leaning away from the all inclusive or the snowmobile trip so it looks like we are down to east coast and Alaska.. so basically as opposite as you can get! I'll bring up some of the great points you have all given me and see if he can make up his dang mind! Also for the drive.. I want to do Orlando if we go because of HP, then I have family in Jacksonville and Atlanta so we would stop over in each location.

That wouldn't be nearly as bad! I was going to say, a drive from Orlando or Raleigh straight is like torture! I don't think that would be bad.

Haha.. torture is the word I use for the 13hr drive between Coeur d'Alene Idaho and Williston ND that I do multiple times a year!!!

More power to you! We drove to Miami from Raleigh for our honeymoon and then back...it was awful.

The traffic and accidents were so bad it took us 16 hours to get there instead of the normal 12.

That sounds terrible! The only thing that can make a long drive worse is when you add ANYTHING to it that will make it longer!
