Caterer For Canfield Casino Wedding

We are getting married next August at the Canfield Casino in Saratoga.  I am having difficulty finding a caterer within a reasonable price given we have roughly 250 people attending.  Does anyone have insight into some people I should call or a creative way to have food, but not spend a fortune?  We are not willing to budge on the bar as that is important to us, but for the food we just want simple, edible and not a sit down.

Doesn't Mazzone do all the catering for the casino? Mazzone advertises Canfield Casino catering on their webpage

  • @xx802xx Mazzone is not the exclusive caterer for the Canfield Casino. They list it on their webpage as a venue that they are familiar catering at, but you can bring in whoever you want to cater. Mazzone is only exclusive at Hall of Springs, Saratoga National Golf Club, and the Glen Sanders Mansion.  My FI and I just toured the Canfield a few weeks ago and the woman who met with us gave us a list of caterers that you can use.

Ok, clears that up. I know there is at least one more place that is exclusively catered by Mazzone too because you didn't mention my venue and they are Mazonne only. I'm excited to taste their food at our tasting soon though!

You know, you are right! I forgot that they have others that are exclusive to them but don't have different pricing (the 3 that I mentioned are exclusive to Mazzone but have different pricing than their other properties). Anyways, I would love to hear how their food is. Good food was extremely important to my FI and I, but we didn't get a good impression from the two Mazzone properties that we visited (for reasons not related to the food), so we didn't end up booking with them. I have heard good things about their food though!

  • I have a tasting this Friday! I'll let you know how the food is.

I was very unhappy with rudeness of the coordinator for our location at first....but after she blew us off on a follow up meeting we traveled 3 hours (one way) for and most likely heard from her higher up about our disappointment...she's been very nice :)<?xml:namespace prefix = "o" ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

  • Well I am glad that she changed her tune! We had similar experiences unfortunately. We looked at two of the ones that I mentioned previously. The girl at the first one we looked at wasn't rude per-say, but not very welcoming either. I got the impression that we weren't important enough if that makes sense, and didn't really feel like it would be an easy process trying to coordinate with them from the West Coast.

At the second one, they scheduled our tour during a wedding! My FI and I were so uncomfortable during the whole thing, and the lady giving us the tour did not listen to us at all when we said we didn't want to interfere with the wedding that was going on. She actually brought us into the ballroom when guests started coming in to take their seats! She was also quite rude when we asked if we could ensure that a tour wouldn't be given during ours if we were to book, and made assumptions that our parents (who were not with us during the tour) were paying for our wedding just because we are a little younger (He's 24 and I am 23). We are paying for 100% of it and didn't appreciate those comments.

I was really disappointed with both experiences because Mazzone is supposed to have some of the best food around, but we couldn't justify going with either one. We did find a venue that also supposedly has great food and are great to work with so far, but it was not on my radar as much as the Mazzone ones were.

Same "not important enough" feeling here too as well as plain rude. They need to step it up with the coordinators because they are loosing business due to it. And I am SHOCKED they scheduled one at the time of a wedding. My second meeting was a couple hours before a wedding while they were setting up because at the time they did not have photos on the website of how a ceremony would be set up and I wanted to know. I am definitely going to request there is NO meetings or tours near my ceremony or reception when guests will be arriving or there. I chose the place I did with Mazzone because I did love the venue itself and the food is well know for being fantastic...but I still don't like the coordinator I have even though she's been much nicer and accommodating since her serious screw up.

Honestly, I don't know whether to be relieved that I am not the only one who felt that way with the Mazzone properties or sad because you have to deal with it to get an awesome venue and hopefully good food. I kind of feel a mixture of both :(. I hope that your wedding is awesome though despite all of this.

At our first Mazzone venue, they were also setting up for a wedding later that day when we toured it, and FI and I actually liked seeing the setup. But the other one was just plain horrible. I thought it was late when they scheduled it at 5:30 pm on a Friday, but figured that maybe the wedding that would probably be there that night was at a local Church and the ceremony was from 6-7, so we would be out of there by 6:30 before guests started arriving. Boy was I wrong. Cocktail hour was from 5-6.....FI and I arrived in the middle of it! And the woman was late meeting us, so our tour didn't even start until about 5:45, which is why we were brought into the ballroom right as guests were taking their seats.

They could definitely take a few lessons from the venue that my FI and I ultimately decided to go with (not Mazzone). I have already emailed the coordinator back and forth about 5 times and they have been nothing but awesome every step of the way, and are even trying to accommodate some extremely special requests of ours, such as getting local San Diego beer to NY!

Food was very good! There were a few dishes that we had a few negative comments for but most were exceptional. For example two of the "cold" appetizers (eggplant parm and bite size filet mignon) was brought out warm and was very good warm, but it cooled out on the table station quickly and then wasn't as good cold. Also a pasta dish was very flavorful but over salted by a lot. We sat with a couple other couples trying the dinner foods and they all agreed on the pasta. Everything else we tried though was extremely good. I'm not worried about the food we'll choose.

Oh, and the coordinator was very pleasant and came right up to us to greet us with a huge smile and hugs when we arrived.
