Shapewear and bathroom worries?

I just started thinking about what to wear under my dress being that my first fitting is in about a month and a half. Initially I had planned on spanx that went mid thigh and had a shaping effect on my lower stomach, but then I thought of trying to go to the bathroom with those on.

Does anybody have any input or suggestions on something that could help with lower stomach/chafing but won't be ridiculously hard to manage when I have to go to the bathroom?

Thanks :)

Re: Shapewear and bathroom worries?

  • So honestly... I didn't pee on my wedding day. Just didn't occur to me. But I have worn the shapewear again since then, and didn't have any problem using the bathroom. They're no different than pulling down pantyhose.

If you're talking about the kind that come way up, they normally have an opening in the crotch to pee through.

  • I was in the same situation - trumpet dress with mid thigh spanx underneath. As crazy as it sounds, cut a hole in the crotch. There should be a small marquis shaped piece of fabric that you can cut. You can pee through the hole. I went to the bathroom three times over the course of the 8 or so hours I had my dress on and it worked like a charm. I just had two bridesmaids help hold my dress off the floor.
  • Or just don't take anything off all the way and just shift it to the other side :)

This.  I didn't wear shapewear on my wedding day but I didn't pee once I was in my dress.  I just didn't have to.  I had a lot of other things going on in my head that peeing just didn't occur to me.

  • What style dress do you have? I found it easiest to just unzip mine and step out of it for bathroom breaks.

If your dress is more complicated than that, I would go for a long-line, corset-style bra & wear regular underwear to simplify.

  • I didn't pee either. Which was upsetting because apparently our venue had a really gorgeous bathroom.

  • I find that this one from Janira is really nice.  It's not ridiculously high hence it is easier to pull down.

It's a great tummy shaper in general!  They have free shipping and returns if it helps :)

    Best of luck
  • My spanx have a slit in them so you can pee (carefully) without pulling them down.

  • The "Assets" Spanx sold at Target and other places don't have the "gusset."  The more expensive Spanx you can buy at Nordstrom and other places usually do.

I don't remember peeing from the moment I put the dress on to when I took it off, which was about seven hours.  Interesting.  It was insanely busy.  I also didn't make it to the bar a single time between people wanting photos, talking to everyone, eating, toasting, dancing...  I finally had the Best Man go get me a drink because it was my wedding and I'd had a few sips of champagne.  But that may also be why I don't think I peed....
  • How did you ladies not pee?? I have the bladder of a gerbil.

  • I agree with porkchop! I ALWAYS have to pee - If i see a bathroom, I go! My dress is a ballgown, so peeing is definitely going to be an interesting trip, with the spanx that will definitely be happening. I'm kinda wondering if the "take the dress off" route is going to be easiest? Anybody have an tips for going to the bathroom in 7 layers of tulle?
  • Llikotdesserd with 7 layers of tulle, will Spanx even be worth it? haha

You have to flip the back of the skirt up over your shoulders!

This is going to sound crazy, sit on the toilet backwards and face the wall. This way you don't have to deal with the back of your dress with all the extra fabric of the train. You only have to worry about holding up the front of the dress. I know, it sounds crazy, but it works.

Also if shapewear has no opening or one so small that you might get it messy and smelly YUK , It is very easy for a seamstress to cut a large opening just above your pub is and down through your crotch. Like something from an obscene underwear catalog. A short flap is sewn down from the abdomen, and a second is sewn to the back long enough to reach the front piece and overlap it by at least one inch, best two. Either sturdy gripper snaps or large flat hook and eyes (like on pants waistbands above zipper) are sewn on both pieces.

Now you have a body suit that opens up to three inches wide and up to five inches front to back.

If you have never worn a snap crotch body suit, note that the front piece would be very short, the back piece very long. If equal length it is almost impossible to fasten fasteners with your hands inside down around your a****le. You want to be able to reach down and pull the long back strap up between your legs to several inches below your naval, then fasten. You can easily reach and see what you are doing mid abdomen.
    Maybe difficult to visualize.
    Google BODY SUIT.

Lots of costumed dancers and actors or actresses have two flap pieces added to the bottom of blouses so the pieces snap together just about front crotch , and keep the blouse or shirt tails smoothly tucked in during movement. They even sell kits, though a good seamstress cane make one in less time than it takes to go to a store. And cheap kits have front and back pieces the same length, which only works if you want to lay back like a baby with your legs up and spread so someone else can do it

I wore a huge tulle dress. And I peed twice (didnt wear any shape wear, just a thong) BUt I was that cliche bride that made my BMs help me pee. Sorrynotsorry.

  • @llikotdesserd how I actually peed was I took my underwear completely off. Faced the toilet. Straddled it and then sat down. This way 90% of my huge dress was behind me and not touching the toilet. My BMs just held it off the floor and didnt actually have to help me pee. I just held the very front of my dress up. Worked perfectly.

This is how I peed when I finally got back to the hotel room.    I just slipped my underwear off one leg, straddled, and peed.  Easy peasy.

  • I've only tried on shape wear once for the curiosity and once it was on I instantly felt the need to pee...took it off and didn't have to pee. I'm not worried about my shape and won't be wearing it on my big day...I pee too much drinking anyways...i'll miss most of my own wedding and reception if I had to fight constantly feeling like peeing and then trying to pull it up and down with a gown...forget it!

  • I cannot wear any confining garment without either tearing it off or having to pee or feeling like passing gas. Destined to let it all hang out in comfort .
  • I bought some Spandex shapewear that go to my mid thigh, then all the way up under my boobs! It really sucks in and has some tummy control paneling and it has a hole in the crotch for when nature calls. I am still trying to decide if I need it for the wedding day, but it seems easy enough for using the bathroom. I think it was about $40, so worth checking out
