Re: @missdelilah

  • Hi @lolo883!  Thanks for getting in touch.  I know I said a month ago that I'd be a better Knottie, but I've been so busy.  I'm still making my wedding favors, and I think I will have to get to a point where I just cut it off, and realize that I can't make gifts for everyone.  I was thinking of doing WP gifts, something for everyone who speaks, and a few left over to do a lucky draw towards the end of the night.

Attached are photos of where we're I'm up to so far.  They're only half finished.  I still need to quilt and bind them, but hopefully I can start on that in the next week or so.  I need to rent time on someone else's machine to get it done.  I bought my own in the black friday sale, but OMG, drama, after drama, after silence.  I still have six more of these to make.  On a good day, I can make two, and when I'm off, I can make one, or occasionally, less than that.  I think the problem is that I just find more complex ways of doing this that produce only slightly better results.  But, I'm almost done, which is a relief.  And I can quilt some of them on my home machine if I need to, but I hate quilting on a domestic.  Oh, by the way, did you ever get around to the t-shirt quilt?

We put a deposit on an apartment in October, and the agent said it should be sorted by December.  It's a short sale, and we're still waiting to see whether the bank will accept.  I wanted that apartment specifically because it fits my giant machine in it, but at the moment my quilting machine is sitting in storage waiting for me to claim it.  We've decided that we're going to try and back out of the contract, but I'll have to wait to see what the lawyer says.  I just feel like we're getting fucked around, and I'm over it.  Plus, I wanted to move somewhere warmer, and it took Nick this long to come around to the idea of leaving MA.  I'll definitely update you on what happens.

Nick's brother, who hadn't spoken to the family in years, reappeared in November, announced half way through December that he was sick, and passed away shortly after, so that's been tough.  Nick's obviously upset, and he's having issues with some of his siblings about it.  One of his sisters is wonderful, one is just distant as, and the other is raving bitch queen of the universe.

What about you?  How are you enjoying married life?

    xx

  • 1. Can't even touch the quilting stuff, but I'm sure it will come together for you!

    2. Short sales are the most misleading name! They always take a long time because the bank hates being shorted! I hope it works out so you can be somewhere warmer! (I could never survive in the north!)

    3. That is so awful about your FI's brother! Very sorry to hear that.

  • Oh I wanna talk about quilting!!! My machine is from the 60's and I have only made one quilt for a friend's wedding gift. It was a tardis quilt.

Maybe I'm confused but are you making quilt squares as favors?

  • So terrible re: your FBIL! H's family went through something sort of similar with his sister, but on a slightly longer timeline +a baby. It's still hard for them to talk about her, 6 years later. I hope Nick's family can find some peace.

Short sales are miserable. H and I want to potentially look for houses this summer/fall but as much as I love LOOKING at houses, I'm dreading the process of actually buying one. We'd try to about short sales but there are so many of them it might be hard.

Married life is great though! He hasn't even started farting in front of me yet. ;-) Been pretty lazy though...no quilt started, but I did make a few stuffed animals for friends who had babies!

  • You guys are all so sweet.

@lolo883 If you have any friends in the banking industry where you're buying, ask them about short sales.  It was actually a couple of honest realtors in NV who told me what the deal with short sales was.  As @lurkergirl said, banks hate to be shorted, but it's more complex than that.  A short sale doesn't always indicate that the bank is going to lose money.  It's an option an owner has before a bank starts foreclosure, and many owners take this because it has a less negative effect on their credit statements.  The prices are set by the seller's agent, without consultation with the bank.  In a bad market, the bank will take a steep loss on the property.  Currently in MA, at least on the coast, the market is good, and while they wouldn't be losing money on this deal (aside from the interest accrued on a long term payment) they obviously didn't like the price the agent set, and for some reason (I assume it to be related to the contract they have with the owner) they can't refuse an offer, they simply stagnate it until such a date as the buyer can withdraw without financial penalty, which is what I'll be doing next week.  So, I'm bummed about not being a property owner, and the apartment was super nice, but I'm super excited about warm weather, and that my area longarm (quilting machine) tech is like Quilt-Master of the Universe.  Way better than really sweet guy in NH who doesn't know how to use the machine, but is awesome at fixing them.  If you're bored, you check out Quilt-Master of the Universe (clicky).

Back to the housing, the realtors I spoke with in NV said that there are over 2000 stagnant short sales in Vegas alone.  If you want a below market value property, foreclosure auctions are your best bet, but obviously not guaranteed.

@larrygaga I'll talk your head off about quilts.  PM me any time, or you can check my blog, which I assume I can post because at this point I'm strictly non-commercial here (clicky).  I'm happy to share whatever knowledge I have with you.  And yes, I'm making them as... well, they were going to be my WP gifts and favors for people who did pre wedding stuff for me (you know, all the issues you have when you plan a wedding in a country you no longer live in) and people who gave speeches, plus a few extras for a sort of lucky draw.  Unfortunately, with the moving, which looks like it's happening next weekend, and the amount of time it will take to quilt these, I'll be happy if I have my bridesmaids and bridesman sorted.  I can quilt them on my Bernina if I need to, but it's such a need to for me.  I've had an Innova longarm in storage since December (real estate issues) so I'm looking to find a quick way of getting it to NV, because at this point, it looks like the rest of our stuff will arrive the day before I leave the country.  Well, it's all an adventure.  And thankfully none of my WP quilt, so they won't know whether I've finished them on a domestic or a long arm.  Sorry!  I told you I'd talk your head off.  Also, what pattern did you use for your Tardis quilt?  I'd love to see a pic if you're happy to share.  My friend Sam has a great one out, but I know there a million out there.  And there's nothing wrong with a machine from the 60s.  I use one when I go home (because I'm that much of a sewing nerd that I take my projects on holiday with me) and it does everything I need it to.

Lolo!  Your stuffed animals are amaze-balls!  I just remembered you talking about a possible t-shirt quilt in the future, that's all.  Also, was it you who wanted to meet drunk MissDelilah?  I'm pleased to meet you.  Really, I'm not that drunk, but I totally forgot that I'm on antibiotics at the moment, and my usually comfortable amount of wine is going to make me wake up tomorrow regretting everything I wrote.

And you're so lucky that you don't have the farts yet.  Nick never even bothered.  I have sensory issues, and generally I find it offensive.  He says he can't help, but I doubt he farts at a decibel level that would require earplugs in a workplace setting, when he's actually in a workplace setting.

Thank you all very much for you kind thoughts and sympathy for Nick.  I'll pass them on.  I didn't know Dan, and as you might have picked up from previous posts, I really dislike most of Nick's family, but just because someone's horrible to me, it doesn't mean they should have to suffer (except occasionally in my thoughts, because that's what everyone does, right?).

Also, I'm sorry if all the clickys were unnecessary.  The way the posts show up on my browser, it's not always obvious where the link is.

Thank you very much to all three of you.  You're super sweet, and I really appreciate it.  xx

  • Yeah I'm very familiar with the short sale process, and will be avoiding it like the  plague along with foreclosures. Just not worth the stress and disappointment.

And thanks, on the stuffed animals! I'm pretty pleased with them. :)

  • @lolo883 I'm so pleased that you have better information than we did.  Our realtor told us it might take a while, but there would be zero issues.

  • @missdelilah‌ one perk to dating one of the state's top Realtors. ;) we're still friends, but H doesn't want to hire him. Still good for info.

  • @lolo883  It's wonderful to have someone help you out.  We're so adrift here.  If we'd been in Michigan we would have known people, but oh well.

If you're still in to making toys, I found this tutorial.  I think they're adorable: http://hillmade.blogspot.com/2012/04/tutorial-munster-sew-vivor-week-3.html#.VMHRWFq4lO2
