I've posted before about how the company FI and I both work at has been acquired by our competitor (this happened last April) and since then, there has been no word on whether or not will keep our jobs. Not even a slight rumor. Nothing. And we do know that some people will be getting fire at some point (but who and when?!)

FI found out this morning that his entire group gets to stay (yay!!!!) And it was also announced this morning who will be staying out of the VP level. My boss's boss gets to stay-- which was a good decision for the company that bought us cuz she's an effing genius. Like, might be a robot she's so good at her job.

Literally seconds after this announcement came out, boss's boss sent out a meeting notice; the meeting is at 11 (an hour from now) and she wants to tell us something about all this.

I know we will be told one of four things:
1. We're fired
2. We're staying
3. There's no new information for us; "no worries, it's all just business as usual!" ugh I fucking hate that phrase SO MUCH
4. We're still in limbo

Honestly, 3 or 4 would be the worst. Even worse than 1. She sent out this meeting notice a half hour ago and I have not been able to even sit still. I suck at focusing on work anyway, but now it's like I can't even think straight. And I have to wait another hour just to see what it's about.

  • (((hugs)))

I hope everything works out for you, the waiting is the worst.  I've been through an acquisition and the whole process is nerve wracking.

My personality always goes to worst case scenario which doesn't help.  If my boss sends me an IM o come to her office I immediately think "oh shit, I'm getting fired" even if there is no logicial reason to think that.

  • Good luck! Hopefully it works out. I hate waiting too, I'm never good at suspense.

  • Thank you, ladies!

AprilH81, I'm just like you! Whenever I get a meeting notice from boss's boss I think "Oh shit"

  • Good luck, girl. The waiting is absolutely the worst. Keep us posted!

  • Ugh, that's the worst. We went through something similar at my office last year. Sending you lots of hugs and good vibes!

  • Good vibes for you! Try to do something to keep your mind off it til the time comes, and whatever happens, it'll work out!

  • God luck! Hopefully you get some answers.

  • I'm probably just going to walk into the meeting and then immediately throw up everywhere. Being so anxious always makes me feel sick, and it doesn't really help that I'm a little bit hungover today :/

  • Sending you hugs. I hope it goes well!

  • i freaked out yesterday when my GM came and asked if i had a minute and the HR manager was at our store. it was a meeting about overtime and to make sure we are taking lunches. and as far as i know only 5 of us had to go. ummm wtf.

  • *Hugs and happy thoughts!*

I hate being in limbo.  It's way worse than just having a (good or bad) clear answer.

I had a similar thing happen to me the other day when my boss's boss told me she needed to talk to me. She wanted to ask if my office could be used as a temporary dressing room for some performers during an upcoming festival, since it's so close to the performance area.

  • Good luck!

Being in limbo is the absolute worst! I lost my previous job back in December but there were about 2-3 weeks where I was just waiting to hear if I was going to keep it or not. That was such an awful feeling that by the time I was told I wouldn't be re-hired for the spring (I taught at a community college) I felt some sadness but really just relief at knowing, even though it was bad news.

  • Those meetings are the worst! I'm the same way about getting pulled into meetings with my manager.

One time my VP had to meet with our head of HR about a difficult position I was working on and we were struggling to fill.  Afterwards he pulled me into a room with my manager and AVP and I thought I was going to cry, barf or both.   Of course the meeting went fine and I got nervous for nothing.

Hope it goes okay and you at least get some definitive answers! I think I'd be a little comforted knowing your FI still has his job even if it doesn't go your way.

    Thinking of you!
  • No. Fucking. News.

This is getting to the point that it's just painful.

We just had a half hour meeting for "The integration team is still working on the plans, but they're not finished yet. But we're working on it. So no news on keeping your jobs. Business as usual till then!"

    Are you fucking kidding me.

Oh for fuck's sake. Why even call a meeting then?

Are you preemptively looking for something else? Does such a something exist within commuting distance? I know you said your town is largely supported by the same industry, or is it just your company?

I'm sorry.    Why to dangle that carrot.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I'm so sorry!!  That sounds awful!!  I hope you hear very good news soon!

no point in needing a meeting. that could have just been an email. we found out last month that one of the dealers we own was sold. no news on when they are changing to the new company.
    image
  • Yeah, there was no need to call a meeting for that.  A well worded email would have been more effective and less stressful for all involved.

  • UGH. The worst. They probably thought they were being super thoughtful too.

I'd start putting feelers out for a new position, just in case. Good luck!

That's the problem, this is such a small town, surrounded by even smaller towns, that there's nothing else. I'd have to move away, which Fi and I are totally willing to do, but we were hoping we wouldn't have to move till after our wedding (which is in 3 months) because it's hard enough trying to plan stuff when we live about an hour from our venue, let alone 7 hours or something.

Worst-case scenario I guess you could be "on sabbatical" until your wedding (if that's financially feasible). But yes, multiple Big Life Events at the same time are hard to wrangle.

  • That sucks! Why call a meeting for that, just send a damn e-mail.

  • That is infuriating!
  • I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks that meeting was so stupidly pointless.
