You should've told her you and your H work for Monsanto. THEN see her face.

GMO people and anti-vaxxers are two of H's pet peeves. He's got a Ph.D in molecular biology, and he, along with pretty much everyone else with that degree, just gets so pissed off about the lack of real, published evidence that anyone ever has for defending these things. Just ignorant hysteria... which they then feel the need to push on you.

He may well go work for Monsanto in a year or two.

  • Kudos to you for not actually throwing the cans at her. I'm sure that would've been my reaction. And then you'd get to read about the crazy lady who got arrested at the grocery store.

  • Oh my god Iams is not even that good of a food lol and it definitely is not the only one with natural ingredients. Does she work for them or something? Wackadoodle.

  • I'm willing to bet she has no idea what a GMO actually is. I once had a guy tell me that the cat litter I was buying was going to give my cat lung cancer and that I was an irresponsible pet owner for buying that litter. I ignored him and looked up vet science articles on cat litter when I got home and found no evidence that he was right.

  • I would have been so snarky. "Excuse you, can you look me in the eyes and have a conversation about why it's your buisness what I feed my pet?"

What a bitch! I try to buy the healthier dry cat food at the grocery store- not too many options there and the organic wet food is too pricey! I'd buy it if I could- but I would NEVER comment on a stranger's purchases or even judge anyone for buying Purina vs Iams. And I'm pretty sure Iams isn't actually "all natural" either- everything has that label nowadays and it doesn't mean anything.

Sometime I get ragey like that too and can't let it go because like you said, you wished you had said something back to her then. I think of all these comebacks after the fact and I'm like damnit why didn't I think of that before! You know you love your pet. Breathe and try to forget that bitch.

I just switched my girls to mostly wet food with just a little dry food to supplement between meals, and I'm definitely not able to afford the super high-quality stuff. I've heard Trader Joe's wet cat food is actually pretty good -- not grain free, but made with decent ingredients and has good percentage macros for protein / fat / carbs, and it's only 60 cents a can here. Once I get through the stuff they have now, I'm going to try that.

It alternately pisses me off and amuses me how hysterical people get about those two things. Anti-vax more makes me angry (because of serious stuff like Disneyland), but both really just make me shake my head and say "do you read ANYTHING outside your political belief/point of view???"

Good luck to your H, I think working for them would be some serious job security!!!! hah.
  • Depending on the level of insanity at my work this week, there would have been two potential options for me:

    (1) (calm week) Silent treatment.  Walk on.

    (2) (bad week) "Go fuck yourself."  Walk on.

That would piss me off as well. My sweet girl had cancer I decided that I would let nature run its course (chemo would have done nothing to stop her type of cancer). I kept a very close eye on her for any signs that was in pain. A friend insinuated that she was suffering and I was keeping her alive for my benefit. I was LIVID and let her fucking have it.

The day my sweet girl was in too much pain to go on I called a mobile vet and had her come to my house and she died in my arms. Pets are sacred gifts that humans are lucky to have, never accuse me of negelecting my companion.

Micro undergrad & Molecular Bio/Immunology grad here.  Anti-vaxxers make me rage harder than poor OP taking sh*t from commando rando cat food creeper.  I live part time in NYC & and we have freaking measles in NYC now.  WTF.
  • Iams tests on animals, so not sure why she's acting all high and mighty. And it's not all natural? wtf?

  • Evil Chipmunk would, in the event of another snide comment about all natural ingredients, smile and say that normally you hunt and butcher your own cow/chicken/pig/deer for said pet, (because dont ya know, thats the only way to get all natural pet food) but you sliced your hand open skinning one of these animals last week so your pet is on "prison rations" while you heal.

Grin maniacally while saying this. The busybody will never comment to you again

Sorry, that's really fucking annoying of that bitch! Probably good that your husband was there to move it along before you freaked out on her haha

Listen to this shit- myself and an old man were in our cars facing each other. There was an open parking space and we both sat there not moving, waiting for the other person to take the spot. We each pointed at it and kind of waved for the other person to take it, then sat for another minute and finally I was like ok guess he's not going, so I parked. Not thinking anything of it. 5 minutes later this man storms up to me in the cheese section and starts yelling at me and calling me a fucking bitch for stealing his spot! I'm like are you fucking crazy? He is going on and on, like "I can't believe you would do such a thing, you inconsiderate little bitch" I was stunned and people were gathering around watching. I yelled "go fuck yourself, get the fuck away from me!" and luckily some people were kind of watching me to make sure he wasn't following me around. It was nuts. I wish DH had been with me.
i use to take a lot of end spots in college in the parking lot. i was waiting to come out to slashed tires or something crazy. luckily i did not. i would have been so freaked out if someone approached me about it.

  • There there, darling. There, there.

Grocery store stranger encounters are the worst.

  • So she basically told you that you are a bad pet owner.  And it is so rude to tell someone that they are a bad pet owner, because unless they intimately know you they have no idea whether or not you are a good or bad pet owner.  I completely understand your rage.
I get ragey when people side-eye me or act shocked when I say that my rabbits are outdoor, even in winter.  Apparently I am abusing my animals by . . . letting them live outside like wild rabbits do?  In a sheltered pen?  And I'm not going to mention the fact that said rabbits are spoiled rotten and if it gets too cold I let them become indoor rabbits.  Apparently rabbits don't live as long if you keep them outside, but my white rabbit lived to be 14, and my brown rabbit is 11.  I think that blows this theory out of the water.

  • So H and I went shopping today. We always get a little wet food for our Siamese as a treat, so I stopped in the pet aisle.

A lady was standing there, blocking most of the brand I get (Purina One Healthy Metabolism), so I reached over and grabbed a couple of cans that were within reach.

She said, without looking at me, "You know... that brand is full of GMOs..."

Sigh. I ignored her, moved to her left, and grabbed a couple more cans within reach. I hoped she'd take a hint, but she wouldn't fucking budge.

She continued, "Iams is the only brand that has all-natural ingredients."

At that point, I figured I'd just play nice and then move on. I said, "I know, but Iams makes our kitty sick," hoping that would end it. (Plus, it's true. Iams does make her sick.)

So THEN this bitch said, "Well, she probably gets sick because she's not used to eating real food after eating all that poison you're feeding her."

I got super-flushed and looked right at her. I must have looked murderous because H touched my arm and said, "Hey... where to next? We need garbage bags, right?" and kind of steered me away.

I've been fuming about this on and off all day. She hit a very sensitive area for me. I just took Samantha to the vet for a checkup, and she's fine. The vet even nodded and approved what we're feeding her. She gets lots of exercise, tooth cleanings when she needs them, vaccines, ear cleanings when she gets waxy, and so much love it's ridiculous. We rescued both of our animals from the shelter and treat them like royalty.

The fact that she insinuated I POISON my cat and said it in a snarky tone without even LOOKING at me is too much for me. H keeps saying, "She's just some random bitch at the grocery store. Let it go."

Normally, I CAN let these things go, but for some reason, I'm mad that I didn't snap back at her. I feel like it's unfinished somehow. I was venting to H all the way through the store, saying things like, "Yeah, I just dropped $400 on the vet visit because I don't care about Samantha. Maybe I shouldn't have rescued her from the pound either."

I KNOW it's ridiculous. I mean, seriously. She was babbling about GMOs in cat food. I don't know why it's bothering me so much. Maybe it's because she accused me of being a terrible pet owner. It hit a nerve, that's for sure.

Please to be making soothing noises. I know I'm overreacting.

I just remembered we have Captain Morgan Parrot Bay, so I may run out for some orange juice so I can make a nice, tall, tropical, delicious drink. :)
Woahoahoa boy! The crap that is in Iams! Hahaha That crazy lady is HILARIOUS! Basically any dog/cat food is decent for your animal. But if she is going to hop on the "I only feed my animal Iams because it's all-natural" pedestal is lying to herself and hasn't actually read the ingredient list on those things.

  • Our animals get a pretty healthy mix of real meat, dry food, and wet food. The real meat comes from whenever I make dinner for us. I save a bit to make into little meals for them, like you would if making baby food. The dry food is to keep their teeth clean (the vet said it helps "scrape" their teeth). The wet food is to help hydrate them and give them a bit of a treat.

    They are so. spoiled.

So really. I'm not too worried, considering my vet gives them a clean bill of health and says their diet is just fine. The vet even compliments their muscle tone and soft, shiny coats. She actually thought our cat was allowed outside because she has better muscle tone than most indoor cats. (BEEFCAKE!)

Vet > crazy bitch in grocery store.
  • Ugh, this happened to me in Petsmart one day.  I buy Beneful for my dog.  She gets a spoonful of the wet food in her dry food.  It is a little treat and she hates eating just dry food.  I was at the cash register and some woman behind me said "oh you know that stuff will kill your dog right?"  I just turned to her and said "well I have been feeding my dog this for the past 3 years and she is not dead yet."

I just don't get why people feel it is their place to comment on something you are buying/doing?  I would never in a million years go up to body and tell them that they shouldn't get X or Y because it is bad for them.  Just crazy.
