National anthem and half-time show

For those that watched yesterday...thoughts?  Opinions?  Like it?  Hate it?

Re: National anthem and half-time show

  • Meh.   First I wanted more Lenny.

Sometimes the people, even Katie herself, looked live other times it looked computer generated.  IDK, maybe I'm getting old, but I like a good old fashion concert, not a bunch of graphics and stuff.  It's like they need all that other crap to cover up they can't sign or something.

I will never understand the need for all those costume changes in 20 minutes.   DH won a bet on that.  Yep, people bet on everything.  DH and his friend bet 10 bucks on how many costume changes she would have.

Loved the National Anthem. But what bothered me is hearing the fans boo when certain images were displayed on the screen in the stadium while Indina Menzel was singing.

I thought Katy Perry did a really great job. The dancing sharks killed me. I LOVED Missy Elliott.

The National Anthem wasn't *awful* but her voice was nasally to me. Then again, that is just how Idina Menzel's voice is.

However, I did LOVE John Legend's performance of America the Beautiful.

Katy Perry was fine. I'm not a fan of "cartoon-like" performances. The dancing sharks and trees just weren't my thing. But it was okay. I thought it was weird how the stage was set up so that no one was near her. Like usually they have fans right up at them, not this time.

ETA: Missy Elliot and Lenny Kravitz were the best part of the whole half time show.

  • I agree with Lynda. I actually thought it was very much recording/ lip synching because it just sounds so different when it's live singing. You can hear the person catching their breathe and breathing into the mic and wind swishing by. And I didn't hear any of that during Katy Perry. It sounded just like radio.

I love making fun of it though. Like the beachy outfit looked like Hot Dog on a Stick employee, and her flying star looked like the "more you know" star. So that's always good for a laugh. Missy was a surprise and kicked total ass.

  • I don't like Idina Menzel's voice, but I thought she did a good job with it. Better than... what was it she screwed up, New Year's Eve?

I was disappointed that Missy was lip-syncing. Loved her anyway, but dang Missy you're better than that. Wanted more Lenny. Katie Perry was ok... again, preferred the live singing parts to the lip-syncing but I suppose that's just asking too much of a SB halftime show.

  • lyndausvi said, people will bet on anything for the Superbowl. My friends boyfriend said one of the bests at his job was whether Indina would go over 2 minutes while singing. Fi said at his job, one of the bets was the color of Gatorade that would be poured over the coaches head.

I thought Katie was okay, I liked the songs she sang. But, what in the world was up with that first outfit? It was so horrible that it was distracting. I also thought there was a lot going on. What happened to the days of just doing some dancing on stage, and just singing? I mean, I guess the tiger was kinda cool, but it just seemed over the top. I preferred the dancing sharks lol, they were pretty awesome.

Missy KILLED it. I thought she was awesome, and all her songs brought me back.

  • A little tangent here -  but did anyone else notice the ATM commercial was puppies being sold out of a back of a truck for $10?

  • I thought the National Anthem would have been better if music was played along with it.  I think music would have kept the tempo up a bit because it drug on for way too long.

I didn't realize that people were booing during it though.  H and I heard the crowd making lots of noises and we were like "did we miss something?"

Katy Perry's first outfit made me think of this...

and according to the internet I was not the only one :)

I thought her performance was overall good.  It was pretty family friendly too which is nice.  I kind of got a kick out of the dancing beach balls and sharks and palm trees.  H and I both wondered what that would have looked like if someone was on something.  It either would have been mesmerizing or scary as hell.

Missy Elliott killed it even though she lip-synced.  I had forgotten how much I loved her songs/beats and her performance definitely brought me back.

Seriously?  Why were all the commercials depressing?  Especially the Nationwide one!

It was subtle. Well into the 4th quarter.  This little boy was holding a puppy, dad didn't have cash.  He tries to get cash but wasn't fast enough.  All the puppies are sold.  The last scene was them pulling up a sign that puppies $10.

I don't even remember the company, only that I though it was strange after the Go Daddy one they would have a commercial for puppies being sold in the back of a truck for $10

  • Loved John Legend. National anthem was fine; I expected Idina Menzel to go over 2 minutes (that was a common superbowl bet question). I didn't mind Katy Perry's halftime performance, but I wanted more Lenny.

Huh I am going to have to google it.  I stopped watching from about part way into the third quarter till right before the freaking amazing catch and then the worst play call in history due to Downton Abbey.

Yea, what was up with the commercials this year? They were all so serious or depressing. All of our mouths dropped open, and we all yelled out "WHAT the HELL?!?!" After that Nationwide one.

  • I too wanted more Lenny.  Perhaps some American Woman would have fit right in.

I was kinda hoping that Missy Elliot was going to end up being one of the dancing beach balls or sharks.  I though that would have been a great reveal!

I saw a thread this morning on Facebook about 16 things Katy Perry's outfits reminded us of.  They had side by sides of Katy and some pokemon characters, Will Ferrel, Guy Fieri, The More You Know star, Heat Miser, etc.  They were funny!

  • Katy Perry was fun as hell. Those dancing sharks and singing beach balls slayed me.

And Missy! Oh god, she stole the damn show.

I couldn't tell if Lenny was embarrassed to be there and insisted on a short set, or if the producers cut his segment short because they're dumb, but either way I would've liked a bit more of him.

I've never cared for Idina Menzel's tone or style of singing, but I know she is at least capable of singing in tune, and sadly, her national anthem was not. That high note was flat, flat, flat! I wish people would offer a more subdued performance that is musically sound rather than reaching for the stars with a lot of embellishment and failing.

I missed John Legend! I have to YouTube it; I heard he was good.

  • The national anthem.....huge yawn. Meh.

It was definitely an extravaganza lights and fireworks all the bells and whistles half time show. I'm not a huge Katie Perry fan, but thought she was a good choice considering the Super Bowl crowd demographic. Which is everybody and anybody from 2 to 102.

I want a dancing shark outfit. This is a very dangerous sign, because.....

Apparently, the half time show was actually a dark illuminati conspiracy intended to lead us all to gay satanism. Who knew?

Lenny was definitely the best part of the Evil New World Order.

    I just love the internet.
  • I actually didn't hate the halftime show. I thought it was a good spectacle. I hated the string of years where they trotted out aging bands like The Who, which haven't produced any new music in decades and sounded terrible. And those dancing sharks were the best part of the entire night.

Although Prince and his devil penis guitar will always be my favorite.
