Re: Thoughts on my cockatil style menu

  • So it seems the consensus is to add another station a more mainstream one.  Any thoughts?  I don't do mainstream well...
Count me as the unpopular opinion--I'm not sure how much more mainstream you can get than chicken. What on earth am I missing?
I was looking at it from the salsa verda/greek salad/olives perspective. My H wouldn't touch that. He'd eat the shit out of plain grilled chicken, but that would be a really sad dinner.
Ah--I guess I assumed the chicken station was similar to the gyro station, where people could pick and choose which toppings to add.

I am a champ at picking olives out of shit, so I understand the olive hate.

I get that, but at a station he can likely request his chicken plain, and have it with a side of grilled vegetables. If you're a picky eater, sometimes you get a sad boring dinner. But I don't think it's on the hostess to fix that issue, anymore than saying you shouldn't serve a boring meat and potatoes dish because I prefer different flavors and Id find a standard dinner sad.
  • I think this is plenty of food and mainstream enough. If people won't eat grilled chicken you don't have to solve that problem. But those stations don't sound like tapas to me at all. They're just two options that could just as easily be on a buffet table.

No they are not traditional tapas, it will be served tapas style though with smaller plates... So if people do want to walk with their plates they can, so they are not forced to sit if they rather mingle.  So essentially it's food stations with smaller plates, lol.

I totally get that it's not the hostess' responsibility to provide things that everyone likes, and sometimes you don't luck out with your favorite food at a wedding. But she asked for opinions on whether we thought it was enough variety and I said that IMO, it's not. She obviously wants to provide options that people will enjoy and that will constitute a full meal.

  • How many people?    If it's under 50 people 2 stations would be enough. If it's more like 75 I would add another one.

Regardless I think you menu sounds good.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • I'm doing a tasting on 2/28, so try I'll try some other things then and get a better sense.  Pasta is an option...  FI and are not particularly keen on pasta ourselves but I'm sure our cater can come up with something to compliment our other dishes.

IDK I just feel like when I go to weddings I rarely eat the plated meal, by the time cocktail hour is done I'm pretty full.  But that's just me and I recognize there will be varying appetites.

  • Are you doing any sides? You could do rice, roasted potatoes, roasted veggies, and wrapped grape leaves as well.

I don't think that you necessarily need another "main", but a lot of people like to pair their mains with sides.

Its less than 50 people.  It's a small wedding close family and friends only.

  • @classicalandedgy - ours is at the Mystic Arts Center. I also check out the CT board every now & then, but it is pretty dead.

And then I lurk over here & pop in like a ridiculous random & hope you all don't think I'm nuts haha. I've been on NEY for years, so that's my regular spot.
That's awesome, we first thought of doing the train and steam boat in Essex...  But then decided against the boat since we can't control the weather lol...  This is my second wedding, and my second time on the knot...  I kind of lurk everywhere.  Just taking it all in.

Both your menus sound fabulous, to me.

@classicandedgy, if your reception falls during a meal time, I'd add in a pasta station.

@GoldenPenguin. I love the MysticArt center. Maybe we should get a roll call going on the CT board. It's dead over there.

FI was the one who really wanted to look there - I thought it was going to be too modern for my taste. But when we walked down the back lawn to where the ceremony would be, right on the water, I got head-to-toe goosebumps and knew immediately that it was it. It's so soon!! I am getting so excited.

  • Personally I don't think you need another station, if the lemon chicken is done on it's own and you as a guest say what you want on top. I don't think it gets more mainstream than that. Even my very, very picky family would have something to eat, as long as they get their gyro/chicken plain without all the toppings.

It is similar, you can choose what you like... It is not all combined.  No olive picking necessary ;-)

Then I don't think you need another option.

In general, the more people you have the more variety you should have.  With 50 people you should have a good idea of people's eating habits.    The stations let you choose what you want on the plate.

I think you are all good.

I just felt the need to point out that on the message board homepage, this comes up as "Thoughts on my cock"
I just laughed way harder at that than I should've.

    Well in that case...

Yea, I think you will be able to please all the guests and give them more than enough to keep them happy.
  • I was only here to find out what a "cockatiel reception" was. >.> <.< >.>

Thank you, so glad someone else was thinking this because as I'm reading this thread seeing people pushing for a more "mainstream" option I'm thinking I must have misread something somewhere... it's grilled chicken people!  Like what do you want, a plain buttered noodles station!?

I know the reason we consider these types of questions is because we have the comfort and enjoyment of our guests at heart, which is definitely a good thing, but I have to admit that personally picky eaters make me a little bit rage-y.

Anyway, this sounds delicious and awesome!  I was dying to serve lamb at my wedding reception but the people here (rightly) talked me out of it after considering my meat-and-potatoes type of crowd.  I would have loved to do something this creative!

No haha I just saw cockatiel when I read it haha. I am about done with this whole week so even though I know it's cocktail (or supposed to be) I saw cockatiel and it made me giggle. I'm not knocking a typo hahaha. I promise!
