Do you buy Powerball/ Lottery tickets?

We don't regularly buy them, but 2-3 times per year when the Powerball is the largest we get $20 worth. The drawing is tonight and we just said "shit!" and ran out to get some.

  • yep.  When it hits $200M we buy.  That is about it.

DH gets scratch offs sometimes.  He gave me one and I won $30.

  • I got $15 last Friday, won $20 off my ticket!
    Today I picked up $30.

I keep thinking about what I could do with it if I won.

We won $20 off of Friday's ticket too!    Reinvested the money for this drawing.

    Same for us.

  • Nope. I'm not the gambling type, and I have, like, the world's worst luck anyway.
  • I've boughtpowerball once when it was huge like this one, which of course is silly since it means worse odds. We buy scratch offs for stocking stuffers but that's about it. I rarely win and hate feeling like I'm throwing my money away
  • Sometimes.

We got some scratch-off tickets to put on the garter and bouquet at the wedding, and encouraged everyone (not just singles) to play. Nobody won any money but it was still good fun.

People always say this but the odds of you guessing all the right numbers are exactly the same as with a smaller jackpot. There's a slightly larger chance of more than one person winning, due to more people buying tickets, but who cares if you have to share $400mm?

The odds are the same whether 1 person bought a ticket or 100,000 people bought tickets.

  • Yup. Once it hits big pots like this, we always "splurge" and buy a few tickets. My Dad has already called & texted to make sure we bought ours. He's obsessed. And usually a really poor looser (..."I've been playing for 20 years and never won" kind of looser. Yeah, you and 175 million others, Pops), but he won 100 bucks a couple of weeks ago and it's restored his faith ;).

  • When it's a large pot we'll buy some. You never know. I must have reminded H like 4 times to do it while he went on lunch.

  • I went in on a pool with some coworkers. I usually buy a ticket whenever it gets big.

  • We did when we were in the Dakotas a couple of summers ago.  We figured why not, since it was at $350 million or something.  Even with taxes we'd make out like bandits.  Our biggest jackpot here is $50 million only, so it was more of a novelty buy.

  • Once in awhile. My husband's work usually goes in on a bunch of tickets. Not sure if they did it for this one.

The odds of you winning are the same no matter how many people enter, but I think the more people that enter the odds of someone winning is greater and the odds of splitting is greater.

  • I think FI went in with one of his coworkers for this one. We don't have the lotto in Alabama, though, so getting tickets requires actually driving to a different state, so the risk isn't worth it usually.

I don't have the disposable income to buy tickets, even if I could get one when I got gas. So I've never played.

  • I have a coworker who is a huge gambler. He always coerces me to go in on tickets with him.

We hit all the numbers. Just not on the same ticket.

  • H buys them every once in a while.  He always waits till it gets to be huge, but I am over here thinking "Um, I would be just as happy winning $50 million."  But for some reason he doesn't think it is worth playing when the pot is on the "small" side.

Apparently 2 tickets in MD were sold that are worth $1M.  Unfortunately H didn't buy his ticket from either of the places that the 2 winners were sold :(

  • We've never done the Powerball thing. H will get scratch-offs every once in awhile at the grocery store and my MIL always puts them in our stockings at Christmas but that's about it. Fun fact - between H and I we won $100 on our scratch-offs this past Christmas. He finally beat his sister for the first time in like 20 years of getting scratch-offs.
  • We do occasionally, maybe like once a year.

  • No.  I play blackjack and poker tournaments if I'm at a casino, but that's it.  I only gamble if I can help improve my odds with skill
  • i rarely do. and i mean rarely. the last time i did it was a pool at work in 2013 and i bough some of my own tickets but that was it. havent since then.

  • We don't have it here. F Alabama, for real.

But when we go on vacation or take day trips to Atlanta, we usually get a Powerball and a couple of scratch offs.

I figure if I start buying when the jackpot is "small," I'll start buying them all the time. I'd rather have a cut-off. :)

  • We got some, but didn't even watch the drawing. The ticket is missing from the table, so I'm getting DH checked this morning and we didn't win. Big surprise. I was upset that he spent $20 on tickets. Statistics say only buy one. Your chances for winner go up so little with each incremental ticket that it isn't worth it.

The odds of winning the jackpot, sure, but the overall odds of winning any prize are 1:32, so you do have better odds of at least winning back some of the additional cost if you buy more tickets. ;)
