What is your trick to getting rid of the hiccups?!?!

So I have the hiccups at work!!! My typical method to get rid of the hiccups is to cover my ears with my fingers while someone else feeds me a glass of water. I geuss it works because I am concentrating so hard on not spilling that it pretty much works every time! But I am at work and feel weird asking someone to feed me a glass of water. I am trying to hold my breath but that is not working either! Any other suggestions!??!

  • Hiccups are the worst! I usually just hold my breath until they are gone - no other tricks here. I've never heard about plugging your ears while someone else feeds you water! I might have to have H try that next time he gets hiccups - they take forever to go away with him.

  • Picture a white horse in your head.

    Got it?

Now cover him in peanut butter.

That always works for me. It takes too much brain power and the hiccups disappear!

  • I breathe in as much as I can and swallow with my mouth closed. Then I breathe in some more and swallow again. Usually works. Last time I tried the glass of water thing I accidentally spewed water all over my pregnant FSIL so I don't really use that method anymore.

  • Drink something upside down (I just bend over and do it that way).  My Grandpa swears by the covering your ears, plugging your nose, and drinking something at the same time thing.

  • I always regulate my breathing. In you nose, out you mouth. Slowly.

  • I eat straight peanut butter.
  • hold my breathe

I do this too. I don't have anyone else feed me the water though, I just hold the cup with my other fingers while my thumbs plug my ears and index fingers plug my nose.

  • FMIL swears by a spoonful of lime juice.
I've also heard a spoonful of sugar followed by lemon juice
I've been told to take a huge gulp of water but don't swallow; your natural instincts to not drown will automatically stop the hiccups or something like that?
Or keep your mind busy; I had a teacher that would ask rapid-fire questions that were simple like "what did you eat for breakfast today? What's your favorite kind of juice?" etc to make the person's mind go to something else.

Personally, I usually just hold my breath.

This, basically. I don't plug my nose, though, just my ears.

If I'm home, I have FI plug my ears while I drink a glass of water. If I'm alone, I can do it myself, although I'm sure it looks absurd. It's much easier for me to do it with a bottle of water, so I can bite onto the bottle and not have to hold it up with my fingers so much.

OP, do you have a water fountain at work? I've had to do the ear-plugging thing with a water fountain before and worked it out.
  • Mine is weird but I swear it works: eat pudding or yogurt. Something about the thickness/creaminess of it just seems to soothe whatever muscles are spasming. I don't know how--maybe the body focuses its efforts on swallowing, diverting them from the diaphragm? Or maybe it's mental, who knows. But it works for me.

  • Whoa I've never heard of most of these. I usually just hold my breathe. @lolo883 yours sounds difficult, like a party trick!

  • It's weird, but I put sugar on my tongue and drink water! Always works!
  • Breathe in and out on a slow count of 4.

  • I usually just suffer through it. Nothing seems to get rid of them for me.

  • Nine gulps of water without stopping. It has a 100% success rate.

  • Wow these are great! To me distraction is key! After I posted this I had to rush to get ready for a meeting and next thing I knew they were gone!

I want to try to peanut butter or yogurt ones next time!

  • 9 swallows of water without breathing. Works every time for me.

  • Swallowing a spoonful of sugar has worked for me. You can't chew it though; you have to swallow it. It's gross but works. I've also had success with a spoonful of peanut butter.

My neighbors like to say that punching someone in the armpit works. But it tends leave the other person still with hiccups and now with sore armpit.

  • Breathe very slowly when they first come on or it's all over.

But if that doesn't work I'll move to drinking water upside down. I don't think it's that hard, actually.

  • I love hiccup remedies.  I get them way too often.  What works best for me is someone has to tell me to say "watermelon."  I can't tell the person to tell me though.  They just have to have the instinct to tell me when they hear me hiccup (so basically that one only works for me when I am around H or close friends or my parents).  I think it has something of just changing your train of thought.  No clue why watermelon was the word of choice, but that worked when I was younger and I've kept it going with much success.

My other remedy is I'll take a big breathe and blow the air into my hands until I run out of breathe (like I am catching them) and "throw" them away.  Weird, but it works.

  • I lean forward until my head is upside down and drink a glass of water. It's the only thing that works ...I have the loudest, most embarrassing hiccups, they border on violent.

    Like so...

Another vote for 9 gulps of water.  Works everytime.

I had a teacher who would tell us that she didn't believe in hiccups and then would just sit there and STARE at the person and the hiccups usually stopped pretty quickly. From personal experience, I know it worked, although I have absolutely no idea why.

  • I try holding my breath and letting it out slowly.  Sometimes works.  Also, eat a spoonful of sugar.

If my students get them, I hold out my hand and tell them to prove it and give me a hiccup.  No one has ever been able to produce one for me.  I think it startles them and changes their thought process.
