Needing shower gift ideas!

I got an invite to a wedding shower last week and everything in my budget has already been snatched up on the registry (which only had 18 items on it to begin with).  Any creative gift ideas?  I'd rather not give a gift card.

Re: Needing shower gift ideas!

  • Can you go in on one of the more expensive gifts with a friend?
  • Ditto on going in with someone. i can't think of anything else other than cash or gift card. You could try to pick something similar to stuff they had on the registry or if you know her style or whatever. That's tricky
  • Unless she's having an extremely small wedding, I find it unusual that someone who is willing to accept having a shower thrown in their honor would only have 18 items on their registry.  Sort of sounds like a ploy for cash, except then they shouldn't have accepted a shower since a shower is for physical gifts.

    1. Are you sure that's the only place they are registered and there isn't another one floating out there?  I would check with someone.

    2. Buy something related to the other stuff on their registry.  Was the stuff that's on there mostly for the kitchen?  Buy another kitchen item: a set of spices from Penzey's, a lazy susan for entertaining, embroidered dish towels, etc.

    3. Go in on a larger gift item with someone else.

    4. Go either more generic or more sentimental.  On the generic side: picture frames and photo albums, a ring holder (a lot of people don't own these/know they exist), vase, etc.  On the personal side:  if this is someone you are particularly close with, then pick out some favorite items for your past and make a keepsake type box: make a mixed CD of favorite songs when you were kids, find some old photos and put them in an album, buy her some of her favorite candy, buy some pampering items like her favorite lotion and some lip balm.

  • Metal chicken.

Or a "date night" sort of a gift set -popcorn bowl, movie theater candy, popcorn, cozy blanket and sappy movie?

Nice ceramic pie plate, fancy vanilla and cinnamon, favorite recipe for apple pie?

  • jacques27 -- The shower invite only listed BB&B so I did go hunting.  There is a Macy's registry with nothing added and then I found a Dillards registry but that registry is nuts...the cheapest gift is $125.  Forget that!  I just realized why the registry might be rather slim...  It's a surprise shower.  If she knew about it she would probably beef it up. She graduated college last year and I think he's only a couple years older so it's not like they're well established or anything.

I did check -- no honeyfund. Haha... :)

Get the making for cookies, pie or cakes.

Get some pans, a bowl, measuring cups and spoons, mixing spoons and all the non-perisable ingredients of something.   I normally do chocolate chip cookies.  So I will get the the chips, flour, sugar, baking soda, etc.  But you can easily do pies or cakes.

Those items can be inexpensive at Target. Honestly I'm one who thinks you can't have too many of those things.     Says the girl who has multi-of all of them.

If you have a bigger budget you can go all out.  I've gone as far as adding pot holder, tea towels and milk glasses.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • Personally Id just pick something that seems nice and in my budget from the store where she is registered and include a gift receipt.
  • I like lynda's idea.  On the cheaper end if you've got no budget, but still thoughtful and nice.  My go to for people I don't know well is "Intercourses - An Aphrodisiac Cookbook".  Kind of goes with a shower theme in a sense without being too out there, and maybe they can use it in the future.

  • I went to a shower recently that was similar. so I found this cookbook called "The Newlywed Cookbook" and a cute apron and she seemed to really like it.
  • Are you crafty?  My go to item, if everything else is already snatched up is a wedding towel cake.  I just buy any set of towels, in there are none or already purchased from the registry, and create a wedding cake.  I can usually buy all the extra stuff to make it for less than $10 at Michael's.  There are online tutorials to follow.  You can buy any grade of towels too, so they can fall within any budget.
  • Picture frame where they can put their invitation on one side and a wedding pic on the other. Pretty much any type of picture frames would be nice. After we moved into our house (1 week after the wedding) we went to BB&B and got a whole bunch of picture frames to put our wedding pictures in.

Towels, sheets, blankets, pillows: everyone can always use more of those.

My best friend got me a spice rack with all these different spices, which I never would have thought of. (I'm sure it wasn't inexpensive though).

  • A really cute gift at my shower a perfect pair gift basket- it was a nice box/basket (it looked like this) http://www.amazon.com/Rattan-Stripe-Laundry-Magazine-Storage/dp/B00SGLXLOC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1424017443&sr=8-1&keywords=grey+wicker+basket

    And had

    Salt and pepper shakers
    knife and cutting board
    oil and vinegar glass bottles
pen and paper (nice note cards)
chip and dip serving (plastic, like for a bbq)
and some other stuff that i am forgetting. I think it was inspired by this https://www.pinterest.com/pin/277393658271667391/ and it was really cute!

  • I agree with the idea of getting something related to what's already on her registry. If it's mostly kitchen stuff, then a nice bowl or platter, a set of spices, a cookbook, a set of bamboo cooking utensils, a wooden cutting board, or something like that. (I mean just one of those things lol) The kind of thing that pretty much everyone uses and doesn't require a specific style, ya know?

If it's more like home decor or bedding, then a pretty throw blanket, or a nice picture frame.

I felt obligated to get my awful sister's awful boyfriend a xmas gift last year and I know he likes to watch movies, so I got him a throw blanket, popcorn, red vines, and a box of bunch-a-crunch (the typical movie snacks). A generic gift like that can always work.

  • I'd get a laundry basket full o' crap.

Well, not actual crap. Household products. Fill it with laundry detergent, dryer sheets, Lysol, dishsoap, dish sponges, cleaning sponges, hand soap, paper towels, etc.

  • If there's a World Market near you, they have a lot of really cute kitchen utensils, like owl-shaped measuring cups and spoons. You can never have too much of that stuff and then throw in some matching kitchen towels and a cookbook.
