Smush Face Dog Rescues

If anyone has ever worked with a dog rescue organization specifically for pugs, french bulldogs and boston terriers (My building only allows dogs under 25 lbs and I just am a sucker for those wrinkles) please share! I'm looking to adopt a dog within the next few months!

I'm really excited too, I've wanted one for a long time (I grew up with dogs) but my ex-FI's son was allergic. So now I'm focusing on me and what I want in life and I want a fur baby to snuggle with and love and take care of.

I'd start Googling for now! Most major cities will have at least one or two breed specific rescues around. An example, Atlanta has two major golden retriever rescues that I know of, they'll take in pure-breeds, mutts, and other retriever types, so even if they are specifically for pugs, or French bulldogs, or whatever, they'll probably have other dogs too. I use petfinder to find pets and local rescues. I'm sure you'll be able to find a bunch there.

Also, my parents have a boston terrier and he's a great dog.

I was just going to suggest petfinder. I've never gotten a dog from there, but I used to browse it when I wanted a puppy. It was mean of me because my building doesn't allow dogs, but I liked to look. Petfinder has a lot of different categories and options, so you can find out more about the speicfic dogs they have available. Or just get you in touch with a group in your area.

I don't have any help for that area either, but if you choose something with a smushed face (and I freaking love pugs so I get it!), I'd advise you to think about pet insurance too. They are such cute dogs with so much personality but they are way prone to health problems, especially since they've gotten more popular and have been a bit overbred. It's not a reason not to rescue one but jeez, the vet bills for those breeds can get pretty astronomic.

Good luck finding the perfect dog! I can't wait to see pictures. In fact, I should probably post a photo of the socks I was given this weekend...click it and you'll see.

THISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS I wanted to say something along those lines but I didn't want to sound like a I was momming you. Brachycephalic dogs can have major, expensive issues.

Oh yeah. I was going to say this too. Bostons are prone to eye problems, and the surgeries can be expensive.

When we got the bulldog we got pet insurance. Yeah, so not worth it. Everything is denied because it's an hereditary trait.

He doesn't even have any of the common issues bulldogs. It's just every little thing is marked hereditary. Once he had an irritated paw. Vet said it might be from the salt they use in the winter in Indy (we had just moved there). Yeah, denied because bulldogs often have skin issues. After the vet visit we made extra sure his paws were wiped down after going out. Never had another issue.

The worse thing we had to pay for was a partial tail amputation ($1400). His tail was corkscrew, really tight and covered his butt hole. No matter how much we cleaned it, it was still getting infected. Now you can't even tell his tail was different.

We just now put the money that we use to use for insurance in a special account.

That's more useful than what I had - clearly I don't know anything about pet insurance. I just know those breeds are expensive to keep healthy!

I can afford it but will definitely look into insurance if that's what I end up getting.

they are just such easy city dogs and can usually be pretty chill so that's what I'm looking for!

Another vote for Petfinder. It aggregates various rescues and shelters, so you'll have a higher chance of finding a great dog. I used Petfinder to find my little guy--he was technically rescued by a cocker spaniel specific agency, which never would have been on my radar (I was looking for a dachshund or corgi--he happens to be a dachshund-cocker mix).

What Lynda said. I can only speak to bulldogs (and English at that), but insurance is usually a bust b/c they have so many hereditary-type issues. The special account is a great idea!

As for rescues, I know there is a LI bulldog rescue - they might have some frenchies.

Boston Terrier!! Do it--best decision you'll make! (Maybe I'm slightly biased.) I've had Bostons my whole life, and H and I have two now, and they are the best. Great apartment dogs, love to travel and snuggle, but can also be playful though they don't require much exercise other than indoor play. Plus they look so darn sharp; hence their nickname, the American gentleman!

None of our Bostons have ever had breathing issues. Our current family Boston has cataracts, and my dad paid to get her surgery, which didn't do a darn thing. Her eyesight deteriorated over time, but she's 15 years old now and still kicking and as happy as can be. So I wouldn't necessarily let that deter you.

I would also recommend petfinder. When I was in college I adopted my Boston from Midwest BT Rescue, which is a huge organization with a lot of dogs needing homes, but I don't know that you'd want to travel all the way to Cleveland/Columbus to get a dog, if you can find one closer. Good luck!

I'm not sure of any specific rescue groups for those breeds. We tried going thru a Yorkie rescue group but they were difficult to work with. We found our boy on petfinder but thru a local rescue. Idk if you're willing to come to NJ but Mt pleasant Animal shelter was great to work with. For a $99 they have a "pet concierge" program. This puts you at the top of the list for a dog you're interested in and could help you find a dog from another rescue. They fee is good until they match you with a pet. Good luck!

Bostons are great dogs! They are like mini boxers, which is why I love them. (I do boxer rescue). I will say that frenchie's have more health problems. Everyone I know with a frenchie has spent more on vet bills than they can possibly count.

Another suggestion is, find a boston rescue (or whatever breed you are settled on) in your area and send in your application now. Most reputable rescues do a phone interview and home visit. If you wait to apply until you have found your "perfect dog" on petfinder, chances are, they will already have approved applications waiting for that same perfect dog.

If you apply now, get your application approved, then you will already be approved and ready by the time they find you the right match.

Apparently some (all?) airlines will no longer fly squishfaces, so be absolutely sure that you won't ever need to take one on a plane.

Also realize that brachycephalic dogs have severe enough breathing issues that anesthesia is a significant risk each and every time. As a vet tech, we would not extubate a brachycephalic dog until he/she was literally up and walking around. Usually you pull the tube after the first swallow.

I vote you go to the shelter and get a mutt!

The reason I want a smush face (besides the cute factor) is just that they are good city dogs and are under the 25 lb limit for my building. I can't do those little fluffy things, cute but not for me haha. I am going to go look at the shelters too though!
