Re: XP: Inner Envelopes etc.

  • @loro929‌ the foil stamped version? The website only seemed to have a sample of the non-stamped one. We have a different foil sample from Minted so I figured the quality should be the same. But let me know what you think when you get them!

I didn't use inner envelopes, I made mine a postcard to save money.

I think those say formal-ish. If you want it a bit more formal maybe a script for the font instead of type text.

ETA: Yes, they are very pretty! I like them a lot :)

Ditto JennyColada on the formality. I definitely think an inner envelope would add to it. I notice because it amps up the anticipation having to open another envelope! Try Carlson Craft! Otherwise, make sure the size differences between outer and card are enough to allow an inner envelope.
Agree.  We used Birchcraft.  You can see their invitations in Party City or Hallmark.....they have them in binders (along with Carlson Craft and some other brands).  We then googled and found a local place in north Jersey who had a cheaper price than Party City's 30% off.  We went with a pretty traditional invitation, but I know most of them had the inner lined envelopes available.  We even had a piece of tissue paper for each set!

We did have the inner envelopes.  I think it just gives it something extra.  But I don't recall any recent weddings that I've been to having them.  So there's that.  Of course, that's all the more reason I would want them.  ha!

Of the two you posted, I like the first one better.  I would almost liken it to contemporary or modern elegance.  I'm not a fan of design on invitations (so not a fan of the 2nd one), but I just lean towards more traditional styles.   But either invitation I would take as a formal event where I'd wear a cocktail dress and DH would wear a suit.
You can see them online too. :)

  • I can't remember the last time I received a wedding invitation with both an inner and an outer envelope, and I've been to some very formal weddings in the past few years, including quite a few that would come close to qualifying as true black-tie events.  I've gotten them before and I think they are a nice touch, but not strictly necessary.  They cost more and are more of a pain to address, and I don't think they add that much to the guest experience.

We are not doing inner and outer envelopes because the invitations we picked don't seem to have an inner option, and also because I don't want to go through the trouble of addressing them--my handwriting's fine but not great, I don't want to pay for a calligrapher.  We are having the outer envelopes printed for free through Minted's addressing service (my one teeny breach of etiquette, but I'm letting it go because it doesn't impact the guest experience at all, and I'd rather use the money I would pay for a calligrapher for things that actually do.)

In case anyone's interested, the invites we just ordered for our wedding (summer, 5:30 PM start time, industrial museum) are here:  http://www.minted.com/product/foil-pressed-wedding-invitations/MIN-OV8-IFS/thrilling?org=photo  We're shooting for a suit/cocktail attire level of formality.  Our venue is offbeat but not informal, and our food and entertainment choices are pretty upscale.
  • We went with WPD and with inner because in our circle, when you do an inner, it really does portray a more formal event (given, of course, the time of day and the actual invite inside is not too casual). We went with the "Modish Marriage" with the gold foil stamp.

The one thing I absolutely HATED was the etiquette pas with "Reception to follow". They aren't able to get invites with the gold foil stamp without it, but I loved it too much and they had such a great sale I had to choose rather quickly.

There's nothing wrong with saying Reception to Follow, as long as it's accurate. It lets guests know that the reception is in the same place versus somewhere else as outlined on a reception card.

These our invitations!!!!!!!!!! And we also got them in White with the blue and gold.

Wait, I didn't know it was an etiquette fail to have "Reception to follow." I thought you weren't supposed to give details like "Dinner and Dancing" or state who was NOT invited like "Adult Reception to Follow."

I'm curious about this too.  What's wrong with a simple "reception to follow" on the invite?  I'd never heard of this as an etiquette faux pas and that's what the invites that we just ordered say, so if it's wrong .  .  . oops.

Yes, I ordered the foil-stamped one. There was a little button underneath the order details that said "order sample". I just got the minted "wedding sample kit" and there is also a foil-stamped sample in there (the one with a bunch of gold polka dots on the top and bottom). It is really pretty and probably conveys the quality of the other one too. Either way, I will keep you posted when it arrives!

@loro929 Yeah, for some reason the button was there for the plain one, but not the foil-stamped.  Damn I'm really annoyed now, because I've probably missed my shipping window to wait for the sample to arrive and then order the invitations.

Anyway I think we are going with the lace from WPD.  Fi and my mom really like it and it will save us a few hundred dollars even if we include the inner envelopes.  Yay!

  • I love them both. And I love inner envelopes. I love all the beautiful paper, and when I get an over the top gorgeous invitation it's like opening a present. I say ooooooooh and aaaaah and admire them and put them on the piano. So, sure, skipping an inner envelope is fine, but when I get one, it definitely tells me you're going the extra step for all around experience. And I enjoy it tremendously.

Invitations are so beautiful. I'd be terribly sad if they became obsolete.

Reception to follow is perfectly correct, as long as the reception is following, and not at a different location. There's no faux pas about it.
  • I do hope that you are using different wording than is on that lace sample you posted!

Please arrange for @lolo883 and I to be at the same table. No need to have seats for our husbands, we'll have them guarding the guest book and gift table for you.

Well... you are so special to me, I have decided to have a Knottie House Party!  So you won't need seats because you'll be so busy being by my side all night as honored friends!  Lolo can be DD and generally watch over my dunk self because she's prego, and Cookie can fetch me drinks and tissues all night.  Now who wants to hold up my skirt while I pee?

I would really like the job of ensuring that your eyeliner is always on point, please.

Definitely!  I just think it's nice to see and feel all the actual invitations in person without (usually) having to travel too far.

Hope this isn't already considered to be a zombie thread but....

@JCBride2015 the delays that you had with your samples from Wedding Paper Divas - what was the reason for the delay?
I have ordered samples from Minted (arrived in less than 10 days), Invitations by Dawn (arrived in less than 10 days) and Wedding Paper Divas - going on 3.5 weeks and my order still says "in review".
I called them last night (I ordered letterpress samples, I don't know if that changes anything) and the woman I talked to basically just kept apologizing but gave me no real timeline on when they would arrive and why there was such a delay for samples that I paid for!
I was just curious how long it actually took between you ordering a sample from them and it actually arriving, and if they ever gave you a reason for the hold up?

This is exactly what happened to me.  Just lots of apologizing.  She said in a general way that premium samples take longer and that they were waiting on some materials from their supplier.

I did wind up ordering that exact invitation I was waiting on, and they turned my order around in just a few days.  I should receive them tomorrow and we only ordered last week.  So, cross your fingers for me that everything arrives as it should!  But so far it seems like the hold up is only on the samples, not the actual invitations.

    Fingers crossed!

  • Can you use the back of a pocketfold as the "inner envelope" to write the invitees on?  Or is it better to leave that blank?
