I hadn't shared!

I started counting and cutting calories on Feb 1. I was at 151lbs and had some weird labs so I wanted to loose weight and get healthy.

Well almost 4 weeks later I have lost 6lbs!!!

I am so excited and happy and I feel AMAZING!

Just wanted to share for those on the same track!

Re: I hadn't shared!

  • Great job!  Have you just been keeping a diary of what you eat?  My Fitness Pal?  I've got to start watching what I eat better.

  • Congrats! 6 lbs in a month is great progress!

yep My Fitness pal is awesome, I also bought a weight Gurus Weight scale to track changes and its amazing.

I also used some of my recently acquired med school knowledge to calculate my caloric deficit in order to loose weight in a healthy way.

  • That's awesome - 6 pounds in a month is exactly the right rate to be losing at, effective but not too aggressive. Good work! Do you want to continue for a while or are you done?

I'm pretty short and have an office job so weight loss is pretty slow for me (unless I drop my calories below BMR which is bad news longer-term) so I'm pretty jealous. I'm trying to lose another five pounds or so before my wedding (I've lost five since I gained five at Christmas, which thankfully was enough to make my dress fit like I want it to, but I want to have some insurance pounds gone too, haha) but it is slow going if I'm eating more than a thousand calories a day :S I've got three months, which is plenty of time, but still.

I think the worst thing about trying to lose for me though is that I burn so few calories from exercise...a 5K run is like 200 calories burned for me, which equals, what, one big glass of wine? So it's hard to be motivated to work out too hard when that's all it gets me from a weight loss perspective. The health benefits are less tangible so most of the time I'd rather skip the run and the wine as well...sigh.

My other obstacle is everyone pulling the "you don't need to lose weight!" and trying to shove food at me. I know I don't NEED to, but a few vanity pounds is a pretty natural thing to want before a million photos get taken at your wedding, yeah?

  • Good on ya! Seeing the numbers drop is so gratifying. Especially when you've suffered the pain of really wanting that glass of wine/bar of chocolate/hunk of cheese when you don't have the calories "left" to have it.

  • Woo hoo! I'm almost down 10lbs from when I started (jan 1). I find it hard to stay motivated so I have good weeks and bad weeks.

I know I don't NEED to, but a few vanity pounds is a pretty natural thing to want before a million photos get taken at your wedding, yeah? I am 5'9" so im a bit taller but I am eating 1,200 calories (sometimes less if I am studying a ton and dont get hungry or wake up late) Thats about 300-350 calories under my BMR with the added sedentary lifestyle calories.

I am not fat, I am just more comfortable at 130-135 so I understand when people say I dont
NEED to loose weight. But I want to look and feel amazing in my wedding dress and during the HM. I also have thyroid problems so its hard for me to loose weight in general so this is a big achievement.

Can you walk around the office? I do that a LOT at school when I cant work out at the apt. I take "breaks" and walk around the parking lot and library. Going up and down stairs is a great way to burn a few calories and get a good leg work out. I also found good and simple 15 min workouts in pinterest that make you sweat a ton in 15 min and its a good 100 or so calories burned, that when you are counting calories and eating ~1,200 Cal is a big deal haha.

There is also this awesome celery and spinach soup that is only 108 calories for 2 cups and it fills you up because it has starch and fiber. its a great strong meal replacer that I have been doing. If you msg me I can send you the recipe.

And like I mentioned, having a good support system is very important. Fi is one that is very munchy for fast food and such and when I told him this was important for me and that I had gotten a "not so good lab result" he got serious and helps me out. He makes sure I have my meals and if I want to eat a sweet or have a drink he will let me take a bite or sip and he will have the rest to help me out. That is important as well

Sorry for the long post! Hope it helps you out

THIS haha this was very hard at first, right now 3 weeks later is not so bad. I am much better at self control and temptation is easier to resist. But since I know this is what I want and its important for me, I usually make the sacrifice and if I still want it the next day, replace it.

Unfortunately I'm quite short and light already so 1200 calories is almost maintenance for me, yuck. I maintain between 1500-1600 calories/day so I'm pretty much doomed to slow weight loss unless I cut my calories well below that 1200 number (at 1200 I only lose about 1/2 pound a week.) That's what makes burning calories from exercise tough too, because I'm pretty small and my body doesn't burn as many as taller/heavier people. I do walk to and from work (a 4 kilometre round-trip), so I get an hour of light exercise at least every day, which helps a bit. I appreciate the kind advice but I know there's not much else I can do besides being patient if I don't literally starve myself. But patience is preferable to seven hundred calories a day and being a miserable hag all the time, haha. I probably shouldn't even be complaining at my current size, but I can't really help it with the thought of all the photos and stuff. It's so vain, but mostly just want my chest to shrink a little more so I'm not so cleavage-y in my dress, although that's gotten better already.

I'm normally like that, too. For all of February I'm doing a fat loss/muscle gain competition, though, so I've been trying to be VERY strict. It's simple (although not easy!) to lose weight. It's much harder to impact your actual body composition. It's like the second I committed to trying to build muscle and lose fat, I've never wanted empty calories so badly! I'm actually pretty good about not having actual cravings like in the first few weeks, but now that I'm in the home stretch I am just so tired of being strict. Things will settle down on Feb 28, let me tell you!

  • @KtieinBkln you are almost there! Soon it will be over.

I was thinking about this today, and I think if/after I reach 130lbs I will start actively training to tone my muscles.

  • YAY!!!! That's so awesome! I've lost some weight too, but the past 2 weeks have been a bit harder. I must say, giving up alcohol (and cheese) has been pretty instrumental!

  • Congrats.

I started losing a little weight myself.   I'm eating more veggies and fruits.   I've have more energy and oddly have waking up so early, yet refreshed.

I've used Myfitnesspal in the past.   I'm just not the disciplined to log.  Most of the food I eat is homemade which while not impossible, just a larger PITA to track. At first I did log to reintroduce myself on portion sized, but that only lasted a week.

I don't worry too much about eating a certain amount of calories in a certain day.   I don't believe our bodies really work on a 24 hour calorie cycle.

DH is off on Monday-Wednesday.  Those days tend to be my heavier, sometimes eat not as healthy food days.  Then Thurs-Sunday I eat more balanced, lower calorie meals.   Or on days where I know I'm having a heavier dinner I will load up on a low calorie meal knowing later I'm going to eat a lot of calories.    Sometimes lunch is a few carrots, humus and an avocado.

Seems to be working for me. I'm down 6 pounds and I don't feel deprived.  My blood sugar has been pretty level too.  I have hypoglycemia and started having lot of low blood sugar episodes, which also motivate me to pay more attention to my meals.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.

I have my fitness pal too, and right now I am only using it to track my weight, and maybe my workouts when I feel like it. I to am not disciplined enough to track every damn meal.

I'm the same way with you about calories. I used to try to eat 1200 calories (that was the healthy recommended range for weight loss for someone my height), and it was just too stressful. Depending on what I ate I would either get too much food or too little. I think that not all bodies work the same, and I think we just have to learn what works for our bodies.

Personally, I don't think my body does well with carbs. I think that they cause me to gain well really fast, even more so than a normal person. Last year I was eating more carbs - and I was eating healthy, complex carbs - because I was training for the half marathon. I was eating Vegan (well I did for one month), and running/working out 6-7 times a week. While I was in OK shape, I struggled to lose weight, and stay at a normal range for me. I'm now on a higher protein based diet, very little carbs, and I don't feel hungry, I have a lot of energy, and I'm finally losing the weight and inches.

Cutting back on the booze has also been crucial. My body must hate me.
