Re: Makeup

  • I need major help with foundation. I am suuuuuper pasty and have not been able to fine a single thing that matches my skintone in the 10 years that I have been wearing makeup (wow, that makes me sound like a baby child). I ALWAYYYYYYS have that weird jaw color line. Everything is either too dark/orange, or too white.

It lasted me forever, so i'm not that opposed to the price point, it just wasn't good enough.

Also, those mousse type ones don't work for me and dry out my skin like CRAZY.
Go to MAC or NARS and have them color match you

I did that at Ulta, and that's how I ended up with this one, but I will give MAC a try.

BECCA! I'm super pale and I have the worst time matching foundation too. The BECCA foundation I just bought I think is the first one I had in my life where you couldn't tell I was wearing makeup because there was no weird color or line on my jaw, and I didn't have to slather it all over my neck to try to blend two totally different skin tones together.

I HATE THIS, omfg. Is that at Sephora? I would definitely like to try a sample if I can.
  • I bought one of the smaller Naked pallets from Urban Decay because I have lots of funky colors but I wanted something more work appropriate. I love it. I finally know how to blend! I feel like a magic person!

Yeah at Ulta they aren't usually actual makeup artists.  Both at MAC and NARS stores they are actual makeup artists and will be able to make it a perfect match.

Yep, I got it a Sephora. One of the consultants pointed it out to me, and then she tried a couple different ones with my skin tone, and the one I ended up with I couldn't even see where it was on my skin except for the good coverage. I am in love! :)

  • I love the smaller Naked palettes! They're perfect for work and make blending/building color so easy since they're all a similar tone.

I really need to try the BECCA foundation. I'm really pale as well and I use Make-Up Forever's Mat Velvet+ in the lightest shade. It works really well for me. I usually use a mat bronzer to contour and bring the color down to my neck to make sure I don't have a foundation line.

Go to MAC and have them color match you for sure.

    BECAUSE:

MAC is so popular that once you know your MAC shade, you'll be able to find dupes of it in tons of different brands in a wide range of price points. You can plug your MAC shade into foundation finder websites, like Findation , which will tell you what color you'll be in the other foundation brand.
  • I am currently pretty satisfied with my makeup routine.  I don't do it often, but I am pretty good at it and am pretty happy with my products.  I recently discovered filling in my eyebrows; the tutorial I read suggested some eyebrow powder kit but I just use dark brown eyeshadow and an angled eyeliner brush.  I suppose I'll get around to getting the proper stuff eventually.

My big thing is I don't know how to hair.  You know how after you go to the salon you look amazing and all they did is wash and dry your hair?  I can never replicate that, even the few times I bought the products they shill (I do have to say Aveda shampoo is pretty great, other than it kinda smells like hippie).  I think it would probably help if I got a decent hair dryer.  Otherwise, if I actually do my hair I just flat iron it because it's easy.
    image
  • A round brush, a product like Bumble and bumble's styling lotion, and the hair dryer attachment that focuses the air flow (what is that thing called?) does wonders for me. I just have too much hair to deal with that routine every morning. Most days I'll dry my hair really quickly with a regular paddle brush and straighten it. Blowing out my own hair takes 30+ minutes. :/ It's usually a weekends-only thing.

Nope never had that happen.  How high up are you putting it?  I only put it on my lid until the crease.  If you want the best shadow primer though that should stop it, Milani makes a great one

  • Any thoughts on good makeup for sensitive eyes? I get so fucking itchy when I wear most eye makeup, it drives me insane. Especially mascara (which I love!) tends to dry my lashes out and L'Oreal stopped making the "bare naturals" line that I loved.

I'd also love people's opinions on eyeliners that are easiest to apply! I like a gel usually but I get mixed results with pencils--some glide so nicely, and others just tug at my skin for a super sexy "polka-dot drunk" look.

As for my own recommendations: I just bought a little 3-pack Clinique Black Honey lip kit from Sephora (at the check-out line display). It's a lovely color that works for everyone, and it came with their Chubby Stick (gloss-like pencil), an "almost lipstick" (slightly more matte, slightly more coverage) and a sticky gloss (not sticky-gross, just...the kind of gloss that is in a tube). I love it!

I'm also into the Bite and Nars lip crayons--pointy enough to be precise around the lip line, but chunky enough to fill in easily. Also available at Sephora.

On the drugstore side, I am obsessed with Almay's cream blush. It's in their "magically matches your skin line" (whatever it's called) and it really does--you can't eff this stuff up, I swear. Plus it is pretty matte ("dewy" stuff always makes me look sweaty).

I put it a little above my crease because I have small lids. I will have to try it again because it has been a while since I did

I like gel liners too for my upper lid. I had been using a little pot with a brush from Maybelline (I think?) but it definitely didn't last all day.

So then I tried the new "They're Real! Push-up Liner" from Benefit. It's the first product I've ever gotten from Benefit that I didn't like :(
It gets kind of chunky and doesn't come out of the pen very well so it's annoying to use. But it does last all day.

Now I'm using the Stila Stay All Day Liquid Liner pen and I really love that. It's super easy to put on and definitely lasts the whole day.

As far as pencil liners and stuff like that, I usually just grab the first one I see in any drugstore brand. I don't even really pay attention to who makes it. I should probably get a good waterproof one for the wedding, tho :S

  • I use almost everything Mary Kay.  My mom started selling it when I was too young for makeup and skin care, so it was the first stuff I started using. I also get a discount.  :D

I use the Clear Proof skincare and then all the MK cosmetics.  I forgot to order some foundation and ended up buying covergirl at Walmart.  It does not provide near as good a coverage as the MK stuff does!  I really don't want to buy that stuff again.

I've been using exclusively MK's creme eye shadows. I have a problem with regular eye shadow in that it always ends up all in the crease of my eye lid.  Even when I've used primer. The creme eye shadow has primer mixed in and it never creases up. However, the stuff I don't use as often (the darker colors, as opposed to the natural colored base I use every day) gets dried up and a little bit clumpy because the little tubs of it are so big.  Probably twice or three times as big as a regular MK eyeshadow. So I'm thinking I'll keep using the one base eye shadow since I use it fast and then just use regular eye shadow over the top from now on.  I've thought about getting a Naked palette because everyone seems to like it so much. I also like the different more natural colors like it has.

I need major help with foundation.

Okay so you know how some makeup companies gets some flack for only having 3 shades of brown and like 19 shades of white?

I have to use that makeup. The racist version. Because they have makeup pale enough for me in stores. I get the color KKK white and in the summer I get No Outside Labor Ivory.

I don't use liquid foundation, I use a spot concealer, BB cream and a finishing powder only. I always think heavy makeup with a liquid foundation looks awful, so if you can get away with just a little or none at all GOOD. I think it just makes your lines, dark spots and zits more noticeable because it's so obvious you are trying to cover it.

Anyway, look for the racist brands. (sorry, earth)

Clearly I'm all about that maybelline. I also don't really use much luxury makeup so IDK what to recommend there. I also mostly made all that up. I read a few articles and noticed that some brands have a ton of really pale white shades and some have shades for everyone, but they don't go as pale.

I live in a pretty white town really far north where the sun don't shine, so that could be why I'm finding all this.

Oh, I also got the first naked palette for Christmas and holy shit it's amazing. Some fancy makeup I really believe is no different than cheap drugstore, and some you can really tell it's quality. That eye shadow is one of them.

Those colors and texture make my eyes look so grey. It's awesome.

  • I bought the Naked 3 palette after I made the thread about it and it is AMAZING. All my other eye shadow is now stored in a separate bin in my bathroom because I stopped using it. It's Naked 3, every day, every night. It is perfect for my colouring (very pasty-pale with rosy cheeks, hazel eyes, gold-blonde hair) and I'm obsessed with it.

This is skin care, not makeup, but I think I'm going to take the plunge and buy some retinoid cream or serum. Now, while my skin is still good. Everything I've read about it suggests that it's the only anti-aging ingredient that actually works, and I'm very cognizant of the approach of my thirtieth birthday, and I think it's probably time to start actually trying to prevent. I'm a sunblock fiend and I take good care of myself, no tanning or smoking and lots of water and vitamins and all that, but yeah.

I don't think I want prescription strength but I'm looking at the Kate Sommerville or philosophy "Help Me" stuff, because they are constantly recommended online as having a high enough concentration to be effective. Anyone know much about this?

  • KatieinBkln I love Benefit! It's a little pricey for everyday for me so I started using NYX dark circle concealer. It's works well and it's only $6. Might be worth a try for you! :)
  • My favorites right now are pretty basic, pregnancy has improved my skin, so I haven't been wearing foundation or concealer.

I use Geisha Ink eyeliner.  It's a liquid pen, but I find it really easy to apply (and I'm a total dud at eyeliner usually).  I also use Blinc mascara (from Sephora), it's a 'tube' type mascara, but doesn't look clumpy or spidery and stays all day, and is fully waterproof.
