Knickknacks and seasonal decorations

This weekend H went fishing, and met his dad and brothers down there. Every time we see a family member, his mom has something for us through them, and often it's a tacky knickknack meant to build up our seasonal décor.

Over Christmas, I got an ugly Santa figurine with some sparse glitter on him. That figurine honestly went in the trash as soon as we got home. This time, there is a little molded bunny that someone distressed in order to make it as ugly as possible, IMO, and a little green top hat ornament (I'm sure we're supposed to have hooks around the house like ILs do for these things) with some glitter writing for St. Patrick's Day. As soon as H forgets about their existence, they're both going in the trash too.

I think I've even said in the past (just brought up in conversation) that I don't do much in the way of seasonal décor because it's too much hassle for me to get it all out and put it all back constantly. I also think I've said that I don't like finding space for things that don't have much use. We create space for things with meaning around holidays, like the nativity scene and H's nutcracker collection from childhood, but we don't buy or keep little stuff just to have Christmasy things to put all over the house.

I respect that MIL takes the time to change all the decorative tea towels and put out her decorations, and she can decorate her own house in her style. Once again, though, she's really trying to decorate our house in her style because she doesn't understand that there are multiple valid ways of living one's life, and she genuinely thinks we need to build up our collection.

So... How much of this sort of stuff do you have in your house? Do you decorate a lot for major or minor holidays? Do you have space to store all these extra decorations? Do you have many purely decorative little items placed around your house?

(The snowglobe favor thread reminded me of this, because MIL is the only person I know who would probably keep the snowglobe indefinitely.)

Re: Knickknacks and seasonal decorations

  • We do not do knickknacks or any other kind of decoration like that. We do have two cabinets with various things inside, but as far as outside of that, on display, nope. I don't care to clean around then or have the hassle of changing them every few months.

My mom is a seasonal decorator though and she goes all out. But then again, she has a complete room/closet devoted to the madness and a system of labeling things/moving things around so they're easy to find.

  • Maybe you could display all your new figurines on top of the cake plate :)

Seriously though...I live in a tiny apartment, so no knickknacks for me. I brought back some of my favorite little Christmas decorations from my mom's house so we'll use them in FI's house next year. I'm actually really excited about decorating for Christmas. I don't decorate for any other holidays.

You should make a little arrangement on top of your cake stand. :)

I'm one of those weirdos who loves tchotchkes, but not really that seasonal kind of crap. I have my own things I've accumulated because they go together. I don't want multiple Santas on one shelf just because they're all Santa. There's one, thankyouverymuch.

I decorate for Halloween when we have a party, and for Christmas. I might leave the gold pumpkins out til Thanksgiving, but most other things don't get changed.

  • I have a shit ton of fall and Christmas decorations.  Mainly because I inherited them from my Mom when she and my Dad downsized and also because I find those seasons/holidays to be long enough where putting out decorations makes sense.  I also have decorations for Easter and Fourth of July but rarely do I put those out, unless we are having a party or family over.

But I also have space to store all of this stuff because basement.

Side note, I really hate those hooks that you are supposed to hang one ornament on.  I just don't get them.  Ornaments, to me, are for Christmas and having a random ornament just hanging out there all year long is weird.

  • I go balls to the wall for Christmas.

I mainly change candle holders and linens for other seasons/holidays. Halloween I have decor for, and I have seasonal wreaths.

My mom is way, way into seasonal decorations and Christmas especially. It KILLS her that FI and I barely put the tree up and certainly don't do anything else.

I live in a small apartment and it's cluttered enough as it is because we have too much stuff. I hate adding to it and I especially am not into stuff without a purpose. I like wall art but other than that, nope. Just not my thing. It's too much effort and not really my aesthetic. I'm big into empty space as a decorating necessity (not like I have much of it now, but you know, someday maybe?)

ETA: I buy a lot of fresh flowers though, and those are kind of seasonal! I always get seasonally-appropriate colours when I buy bouquets. That kind of counts as something, right?

  • Zero.  It's just more stuff to dust.

I do have a lot of "collectible" knick-knacks because I used to work in a store that sells them and it's super easy to get caught up in the collecting mentality, especially with "limited editions".  They are all in a box in a closet somewhere.  And I do have a Dept. 56 village that about once every three or four years I will actually bother to go get a stepstool and bring them down from the tops of the cupboards and put them on display at Christmas.  That's the extent of it.

I prefer to collect things that I can use - perfume, jewelry, and make-up.
  • My mom and sister have seasonal stuff. My mom has a shit ton. Every holiday there is some sort of candy dish or cookie jar that goes with the time of year.

My grandmother always did to.  There was different towels, sheets and comforters for spring/summer and fall/winter.   Then some random knick-knacks.

I have a lot of xmas stuff.  I do have a wreaths for both the fall and spring.   I put out a plastic pumpkin in the fall.   Some other Spring/Easter-ish stuff that I put out if I remember.  Key word is if I remember.

If it was given to me I would keep them and hopefully remember to put them out.   That said, except for xmas, I don't normally go out of my way to buy seasonal stuff.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • My mom goes all out and I used to love helping to decorate growing up. She has a substantial santa figurine collection.

Now, for me, small home = minimal knicknacks.

Also, DH doesn't really like clutter or seasonal decor, so the day after Christmas he asked me when I was "cleaning that stuff up" (!!!!) I replied, "After the 12 days of Christmas. Deal with it."  It was like, one small table-top tree and five other knicknacks.

Also, Christmas is the only holiday I decorate for. Forget Easter, St. Patrick's, Halloween... Not into it.

Yep, my thing is that I love table linens. I'll do a seasonal color scheme, and maybe some holly and a wreath on the door. But random Santas around the house are not my jam.

I do decorate pretty late for Christmas - I love Advent and would prefer not to be sick of Christmas by the time it arrives - so I wait until after the 12th day of Christmas too :)
  • I change up the dining table based on the season and go all out for Christmas.. this year I finally had vaulted ceilings and convinced FI we needed a 10' tree. Other holidays heck no.. lot of work and I'm not into it.. I used to also stock pile shit that was given to us (I felt bad giving it away), it all ended up in the basement when we moved a year ago and we finally went through and tossed out or donated almost everything we hadn't unpacked in a year.. we have 1200sqft of finished basement so I guess I do have room to store anything I want.. just don't need it so why keep packing it from house to house?

    Ha! I love this.

I go balls to the wall for Christmas too! I have boxes of stuff and every year I take on 1 or 2 new DIY projects to add to the collection.

However, the rest of the year I do not do anything. I might have a Halloween sign for the front door somewhere but I really cannot remember.
  • I have an attic, so I have a reasonable place and amount of space for seasonal stuff.

Most of my seasonal decorations go outside, though.  I have door wreaths and those outdoor mini flag things for most holidays/seasons.  I have an easter table cloth and right now I have a bowl of metallic plastic eggs on the table.

In the spring/summer, my lawn flamingos will return to the yard, and I leave up the red white and blue wreath May - September.

The first year I was in my house, I put those neon spider web things all over my bushes, and they were a bitch to get off, so this year I stuck to a garland and some lighted figures.

Xmas I decorate both outside and inside, though much less this year than the year before.  I have outside lights and 3 inflatables.  I don't like my options for where the fake tree goes or how much space it takes up, so we may get a table top one next year!  But yes I do own towels, dishes, glasses, mantel decorations, etc for Xmas.

I feel the same way you do about this stuff. We live in a 1 bedroom apartment (it has a den but there's already an old mattress and vacuum cleaner in there...that's enough "crap" already). We've only hung up one picture so far and it's been almost a year! So we definitely didn't bother with holiday stuff (we didn't even have a tree up...oops).

  • I don't do year round knick knacks, but I am trying to build up my seasonal decor now that we've been in the house for a couple years.  I just keep an eye out, especially after the holiday when things go on sale, and only buy when I know I have a place for something.  That's key to me to ensure I don't have a cluttered house.

Maybe you and @flantastic can work something out for the extra knick nacks!

  • I don't have a lot of seasonal decor other than Halloween and Christmas, but I do have some. I store it in 5 gallon totes upstairs. It's out of the way and I label the bins to know which holidays are in what totes. Right now I have 3 just for Christmas. 2 for Halloween and another for the rest.

We have some knick knacks out all year tho because we like to go to a local museum and make glass things and they are pretty cool to display.

When fall comes I display all of our glass pumpkins that we made. Right now for Christmas/winter I have a snowman out that I made and a couple Christmas trees and ornaments. I will probably tuck them away in the corner cabinet this month and then bring out the flowers.

I get giddy about my holiday stuff almost as much as I do about my garden.

LOL!  I'll pass.....I'm not into glittery tacky decor.  :D

Yup, I've always wanted to go there, but haven't made it yet!

Oh man do I recommend it! H and I have made it a tradition to go and make pumpkins every fall and an ornament every Christmas time. This year instead of ornaments we made the trees.

We've been there so often and H used to work there in the IT department that they recognize us when we go in.

They've got a new wing opening this month and I'm interested in stopping by. The tickets to the museum are cheap and if you're a local resident it's $6 and you can get 1 person in for free.

  • I only decorate for Christmas, and then it's only the tree, garland around the bannister, and my Nutcracker collection (which J thinks is creepy as hell, but I used to dance in it, so stuff it).

Ain't nobody got time for every single holiday.  I don't like dusting as it is, let alone dusting around decorations.

  • I don't mind decorating, but I like the very subtle, classy type of decorating (pumpkins on the doorstep, garland on the mantle, etc).  It's been a little difficult with SO because he likes to decorate like the house just threw up the holiday/season everywhere.  It's just so. much. stuff.  And not all of it is cohesive, which drives me crazy. It's a monumental task to take out, decorate, and put away, but keeping it all clean is a nightmare.  For the moment though, if he wants to put the effort into taking it out, setting it up, and taking it down, then that's his prerogative and I'm not going to stop him.

    image
  • I do small touches of seasonal and more around Christmas. Most of the time my small touches are "dressing things up" that are always out. Examples- I have a heron statue in my house that gets a scarf put on him in the winter. The owl pillow I have gets a Santa hat at Christmas time.

We also have a collection of rubber ducks that we put out in the bathroom by season.
  • I only decorate for Christmas and Halloween, but I do love knickknacks. I have a bunch of little cute trinkets.
    image
  • I don't like knick knacks at all. I have to really love a thing if I'm going to bring it in my house and dust it. However, I wouldn't mind that glass decor of yours, @paperpusher.
  • I would like to decorate more than we do. I have a Christmasy paper box and a non-Christmasy one that I switch out. I also have some wire balls that are about an inch and a half in diameter and made of zig-zaggy wire. Half are red and half are gold. They're my favorite decoration. I put them in little dishes.

I also have a couple gold bead and ribbon garlands and a few strings of lights. I don't like a ton of knick knack stuff, but some is ok.
