  I sold my dress and kept it in the same garment bag that it came in, and literally just folded it over very loosely and put it in a large box and shipped it UPS.  The buyer needed to have it steamed, but it was otherwise fine.

  Find a box that will hold the dress when it's folded in half or in thirds. Put the dress in the garment bag and fold it gently, then wrap it in some kind of plastic just in case the box should get wet. That should be enough to protect it from any damage or mishandling.   I bought mine from a seller online and it came in a big box and the dress was in the original garment bag on the hanger and was folder either in 1/2 or 1/3s.  I knew I'd have to have to altered and pressed anyway so it wasn't a big deal.  It didn't have any extra packing material since the dress took up the whole box.  Make sure to have insurance on it though
