Re: NWR-- new dog, old owner vent

  • Red update: he's got pulmonary hypertension and needs meds for the rest of the his life. Apparently though they are about 30$ a pill and he needs 2 a day. Time to start a gofundme. JUST KIDDING. we will of course figure something out.

He and Brando are getting along great! They play tug, wrestle and run together. They'll be best friends by the end of his first week here.

He's a super cuddle monster and quite the little gentleman. Totally their loss because we got an amazing little man :)

    No disposable pets!

  • Franklin might have acid reflux like his dad. It's whatever. Fi doesn't leave me because I take expensive pills, why would I leave my baby?

Poor puppy :( I'm glad you at least figured out what's wrong and know how to make it better!

This might be a dumb question, but have you looked into pet health insurance? I have no clue if it would even be an option if his condition is considered preexisting, but it's worth looking into.

Not a dumb question. We can get him insurance, but this is pre-existing since the vet found it in his first exam. Anything ever related to this won't be covered. It won't really be worth it at this point. We're working on pricing out the med at a bunch of different places now. He'll get it quick. Happy to have him :)

Damn, that's a lot of money. That's 420 a week! There has to be something less expensive, because that is crazy.

My husband has discounted pet insurance from his work, so we have our dog covered. People should get pet insurance!

  • Man an allergic baby is one of the very, very few excuses to give a dog away. However, when people just abandon their dogs I assume they are usually better off with new owners or at least less miserable if they are put down.

    Sorry, I'm a downer.

  • I'm one of the ones who had to give my cats away because of J's allergies... I would de-hair religiously before he came over, and he would still get the super stuffed nose and puffy/runny eyes within a half hour.  People health trumps pets.

Edgar & Ellen got to go live with my sister on her acreage, though, where they rule the roost and terrorize the dogs.  If I didn't have J, I would have had them until they died of old age.  And I get to go see them in a couple of weeks!   J stopped being flippant about them after I broke down and cried over missing them a few times (well, he stopped after the first time, but I still had a few more sessions).

  • I have only given up a pet once and it was because I was a stupid 18 year old who thought she could get away with sneaking a tiny kitten into the house behind her parents backs. That being said, when I surrendered her, the humane society promised me that she would be snatched up real quick since she was still a kitten.

A few years later, we adopted my first furbaby who ended up becoming my mother's second furbaby, Dane. He was this amazing Black Lab/what we believe to be Pit Bull mix who bonded much more with my mother than he did me. I was fine with that since my mother was home all day with him anyway and I was at work all day. We had to put him down this past October due to a bacterial meningitis outbreak he had that wasn't treatable. I now live with my BF and we have a one year old cat named Loki, who though he is a little shit and enjoys random scratching or biting me, I can't ever imagine getting rid of him even if I say I want to when he scratches or bites me.

People who give up their animals because of health issues in the animal itself are scum. You took on the responsibility of the animal, figure out a way to pay for it. When Dane came down with the meningitis, my parents spend thousands of dollars of their hard earned money and plastic to make sure he was taken care of. Unfortunately, nothing was working and the decision was made to end his suffering. I miss him every day and I feel somewhat responsible for him getting sick or whatever because I wasn't there for him like I said I would. That being said, I know he was loved up until the moment he passed and the vet was amazing in making sure his memory lived on.

Sorry for the long winded response. I feel very passionate about animals and them not being treated right.
