My godmother has the most perfect screened porch but I don't have a photo.

This would be my little slice of heaven. Going to P&R now or else I'll be on pinterest all day.

ETA: It's going to be quite a while before we can even think of buying a house with a porch, but in the meantime I'm going to look for ideas for FI's patio. I haven't had a place with an outdoor space in years so even the little patio of the condo is exciting to me.

  • LOVE these threads!

Since H and I are now home owners (eeek!) we will get to redo our porch. We really want a wrap around, but I don't think it is possible with our home now. So I want something like this:

    image

    Minue the ocean obviously...

My dream porch would be this:

    image

Backyard would be more fire pit then porch (which is totally doable for us!)

  • I dream of one day having a porch. And that is where my dream stops because most of the houses out here are porchless. In less you go older historic homes or super expensive new builds. Or some of the homes on those little farm/ranch things in the burbs.
  • I thought this was going to be about watching porn on the porch or that you have neighbors who have sex on their porch.

Tomorrow we'll have a TMI confessions thread about having sex on your neighbor's porch.
    TMI warning!

When we first started dating, FI's roommate went out of town so we decided to drink a bunch of tequila and have sex on their back deck in plain view of all the neighbors. I still wonder if there's a poorly-made cell phone video of that somewhere...

  • Am I the only one who doesn't have a pinterest board full of pipe dreams? I know that sounds so Debbie Downer but I honestly don't pin stuff like those pictures that I know are 2 million dollar homes that I can never have. I also find the idea of sitting in your front yard/ porch so awkward. I mean the backyard, yes, chill out there all the damn time but I would not just sit out front where every car going by stares at me. My parents have adirondack chairs on their front porch and we have never sat there once, yet we eat dinner on the back deck all summer.

First of all, front porches are for playing the banjo obvs. But seriously, I think a lot of it is for curb appeal, and to feel welcoming to guests, and to make a statement. I had a friend who lived in my neighborhood in high school (super quiet neighborhood with big front yards and no traffic) and we all used to sit on the bench swing/rocking chairs on his front porch in the summer and chat for hours. Sometimes his mom would come out and sit with us too. He had a nice backyard, but there was just something very cozy and comfortable about that front porch. Sometimes our other friends would go by on their bikes, see us, and stop to join us.

And as for the pipe dreams on pinterest thing, I don't pin the 2 million dollar kitchens because I want to have one. I pin them because I like the tile, or the style of cabinets, or the color scheme, etc. I pin them for ideas of different elements I can pull from them to incorporate into a real kitchen. So no, I can't have the exact kitchen in the photo, but I can have some elements from it and that's what I'm looking for, ya know what I mean? I'm sure not everyone pins stuff solely for ideas, but that's what I do. (And I tend to pin smaller "more realistic" kitchens, not the giant fancy gourmet ones)

Girl I drive around the fancy ass parts of town with 10 million dollars homes play the "when I'm a millionaire" game. Dream big yo. Maybe you will be a millionaire. You don't know the future.

  • Don't piss on my porch, @jenna8984!

I don't have all bazillion dollar shit pinned, but yes to everything Novella and Magic said. Nothing wrong with using unattainable things as inspiration for the things that are attainable.

And I LOVE sitting on a front porch. A covered porch was one of my main requirements in our house search, so I could sit outside and watch thunderstorms roll in. Drink a beer in the evening and chat with the neighbors. I feel really antisocial sitting in the backyard; that's for dogs, swing sets, bonfires and barbecues, not quiet swinging and general neighborliness.

  • @lolo883 Well H & I are antisocial assholes who hate all our neighbors hahahah. If I lived next door to you, I'd be all up on your porch ;)

  • @jenna8984 DH and I don't currently have neighbors and live in the middle of nowhere, so we spend a lot of time on our front porch. I could never live in a neighborhood or somewhere that I felt uncomfortable on my front porch.

As far as the million dollar stuff, I dream big. It can be an issue  but I can pick out certain things on each that I like

Is it weird to say the first week me and FI actually hung out, we had sex every day in his grandma's house? She lived with FI's family but they didn't sell the house yet, so it was empty and near-ish his home. A week straight of sex at grandma's house.

I think a lot of this comes down to the vibe of your neighborhood, too. When I imagine a proper porch, I either envision a giant plantation-type manse that's set back from the road by a long driveway, or a neighborhood full of houses with similar porch-style designs that encourage people to stop and chat as they walk by. Where I grew up the lots weren't huge or anything, but it was for sure a driving-oriented place, so the chances of actually walking by someone sitting on their porch and being able to stop and shoot the shit were slim. Add to that the fact that our front yards were pretty deep, too, and you have a recipe for anti-social backyarding instead of social porching.

  • Well, I see you all have this nicely in hand.

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE porches. Give me all the porches.

  • This is my new house! (don't stalk me, unless you bring cookies.) I will totally sit and be neighborly on this porch. I'm already shopping for porch swings and light-up plastic Santa statues. And my H will probably be That One Guy who retrieves the newspaper in his boxers.

PS if anyone has suggestions on what color to paint the shutters, hit me. I'm thinking a deep teal.

I am in love with your driveway. And perfect lawn.

FI works on cars all the time, so house hunting includes a need for big driveway space, and yours is glorious.

  • @madhops thanks! The driveway and fire hydrant will both come in handy for the giant bonfire parties H likes to have. ;)

I love the lamp posts. I'm gonna pretend my house is in Narnia.

I love it! That actually looks just like the house we almost bought! Definitely a good neighborly porch :)

We have a giant light-up plastic penguin for xmas. And-- terrible confession-- it's still outside thanks to our lack of storage and no garage. My shower is this weekend so I'm thinking I'll just throw that sucker in my car and stash it in my parents' attic for now... cuz really where the hell are we gonna put a giant plastic penguin in our tiny cluttered house? And yet I bought it anyway. But I digress.

  • Super cute house!! I'd ditch the shutters all together, I don't know why I've always hated shutters. LOL

LOL I love shutters. Windows without shutters look like eyeballs without lashes to me. Just sad and creepy.
