Weekly home talk: Porch P0rn

Re: Weekly home talk: Porch P0rn

  • Deep teal is an awesome choice, or a deep, warm charcoal grey?

  • Don't piss on my porch, @jenna8984!

I don't have all bazillion dollar shit pinned, but yes to everything Novella and Magic said. Nothing wrong with using unattainable things as inspiration for the things that are attainable.

And I LOVE sitting on a front porch. A covered porch was one of my main requirements in our house search, so I could sit outside and watch thunderstorms roll in. Drink a beer in the evening and chat with the neighbors. I feel really antisocial sitting in the backyard; that's for dogs, swing sets, bonfires and barbecues, not quiet swinging and general neighborliness.
I think a lot of this comes down to the vibe of your neighborhood, too. When I imagine a proper porch, I either envision a giant plantation-type manse that's set back from the road by a long driveway, or a neighborhood full of houses with similar porch-style designs that encourage people to stop and chat as they walk by. Where I grew up the lots weren't huge or anything, but it was for sure a driving-oriented place, so the chances of actually walking by someone sitting on their porch and being able to stop and shoot the shit were slim. Add to that the fact that our front yards were pretty deep, too, and you have a recipe for anti-social backyarding instead of social porching.

My grandparent's cottage is in a quiet area with trees and a beach to look at, so when I think front porch I think that I guess because so much time in my childhood was spent out there.  But, if I was just in a residential neighbourhood I really don't understand why I would be on the front porch.  To watch the cars go by or creep people or something?  TBH it reminds me of old people sitting there (which I assumed was because they didn't have much to do or something with their time) and just say hello to people as they walk by the house.  If I want to hang out in a residential area I want to look at nature and that kind of thing, not people or cars.  Maybe that's just me.

  • @lolo883 love it! Our house is very similar (down to the big tree out front), except our shutters are a burgundy color! I like the idea of a dark teal or deep green though!

Super cute house!! I'd ditch the shutters all together, I don't know why I've always hated shutters. LOL

    Who even ARE you???

LOL I love shutters. Windows without shutters look like eyeballs without lashes to me. Just sad and creepy.
lol. well a lot of New England homes look like this- where there's not really room between the windows to have shutters. So I guess I just grew up so used to not having them.

Ah well those still have the decorative casings around them, they're not just plain. Mine would be naked if I took the shutters off and I can't violate my windows like that.

  • Standarded issued suburan Arizona home. Naked windows and no front porch. And note the desert landscaping. Also this is what every house on your street will look like. Ranging in shade from tan to sand to desert golden and maybe, if you're in a funky part of town, a light maroon.

Then I'm totally in favor of teal...would you do the front door to match?

No, the front door is wood and it's gorgeous as-is!

  • Jesus, now that I'm looking at it, why did three women an a cat need all that house?

    For, um, magic stuff.

    Seriosuly, it's fucking huge.
  • Jesus, now that I'm looking at it, why did three women an a cat need all that house?

    Magic linen closet.
  • I had a front porch on my old house.  Never used it.  I'm a back deck kinda girl.  We back onto a green space with a path.  We have a balcony off the master and a covered deck underneath.  I love sitting in either of those with a book, hat and sunglasses and secretly watching people go by while reading.  No one ever seems to notice I'm there.  Creepy me.  ;)

  • @ashley8918 Circular room is called a Turret. You need a turret.

I was gonna say the same thing about the Sabrina house... or TV houses in general. So many shows where they live in HUGE beautiful houses... but it's like a single mom who works in a restaurant or something like that. Riiiiiight.

    Witches need space.

I always wanted the house from Charmed.

  • If I can pick any house on TV, I would choose Yolanda Foster from RHOBH.  Her closet alone makes me happy.

  • Love the Gilmore Girls House! The house from Parenthood is also a good one!
